Mental Training for Skydiving and Life, by John DeRosalia

This is a peak performance handbook--for individuals and teams--for skydivers and non-skydivers alike. It’s a "how to" book that teaches practical methods and techniques for designing realistic plans to achieve goals. Best of all it's filled with creative and innovative mental training tools that are simple to use and can be applied immediately. John DeRosalia is a master at motivation and performance enhancement. He’s been training the ‘best of the best’ both in and out of skydiving for over a quarter of a century. The 2 chapters on teamwork alone are invaluable. The chapter Video Games—the Creative use of Visualization and Imagery, is ingenious, extremely effective, and lots of fun. The chapter on Performance Anxiety can make a difference immediately. This book is an exhilarating experience. It can change your life.

In 1954 an event occurred that shocked the world and expanded the boundaries of human consciousness forever. Roger Bannister of England, an athlete who refused to abandon an impossible dream, ran the mile in three minutes and fifty-nine seconds in a race that will never be forgotten by those who saw it. Until that day it was believed that no human being was capable of running a mile in less than four minutes. It was an accepted and well-known medical fact that man was not biologically or structurally designed to run at such speeds—a fact that Roger Bannister chose to ignore.

His belief, conviction, and knowing, allowed his vision to extend beyond the confines of “reality.” And while his physical achievement was truly amazing, it paled in comparison to the psychological impact this achievement would have on the world. Within days, the four-minute barrier was broken again by another runner. And two weeks later it was broken again. And then again, and again, and again… Why, suddenly, were so many athletes performing a feat that only weeks before had been impossible? The answer, of course, is that they no longer believed it was impossible. Their old reality had been shattered and their present reality had taken on new parameters, all because someone had a dream and refused to believe an illusion.

What are your boundaries? What secret convictions do you hold that stop you from realizing your dream? Do you think you’re not smart enough, or skilled enough? Do you need proof that it can be done? Is what you want only achievable by those “special others” because they have qualities and abilities far beyond yours? Mental training for peak performance is a process that leads to an interesting phenomenon called change. Change is something that either occurs or it doesn’t. It’s one of the few things in this world that’s black and white. There’s no gray area. If it occurs a little, it’s change. If it occurs a lot, it’s change. But there’s no in-between.

Change can be either large or small. What matters is not the amount, but the direction. Generally speaking, small change now is better than big change later, because later has a way of never showing up.

There’s also no such thing as “trying” to change. If you’re trying to change, you’re not changing—you’re “trying” to change. You can jump out of a plane or you can not jump out of a plane. You can exercise every day or you can not exercise every day. But you cannot “try” to jump out of a plane or “try” to exercise every day. You either do it or you don’t. The paradox of change is that the harder you try, the less you change; the less you change, the harder you try. And so this book is not about trying to change. It’s about changing.

ESPECIALLY For Skydivers-and other athletes too
By KTM Kim
If you are serious about your skydiving, you must get a hold of this book. I'm sure you heard, or read Jack Jeffries' review of this book, he's right. Skydiving, as are other sports, is a mental game. MORE so than other sports because we only have about a minute of "pratice" time, each time we go up. That is important to remember. The author explains simply the techniques and exercises he uses and teaches to fly with proficiency. You'll breeze through it with his plucky attitude, and personal stories that relate to the ideas he teaches you. You won't be disappointed! And like the title says, it will help you in life as well. Mental training is where it's at. Get into the zone and WIN competitions!
