A great start to Java 8
By G Kenmore
This book is written for a specific audience - Java programmers coming from version 6 and 7 and provides a very broad look at the new features in Java 8. Java SE 8 for the Really Impatient does an excellent job of accomplishing what it sets out to do.
At only 200 pages, the book covers the new features, why a programmer might want to use them, and a few examples of show to do so. While many comp-sci texts aim to be both an introduction and a reference (often failing at both), Cay Horstmann gives the reader a solid enough foundation to let Google fill in the specifics.
The first chapter introduces lambda expressions and touches on functional programming. Chapter two focuses on the Stream API, which is wonderful. Chapter three is more of a conceptual view of functional programming, building on the first two chapters. It should help to cement ideas for readers who haven't worked with a functional language before as well as provide context for why functional programming and lazy evaluation are so desirable.
Chapter four, the longest in the book, scratches the surface of JavaFX, the new GUI framework. At only thirty pages, the chapter does a great job of touching on the important areas of JavaFX. Chapter five looks at the much needed update to date and time functionality. Chapter six covers improvements to concurrent processing in Java as well as some caveats to keep in mind.
Chapter seven looks at the greatly updated JavaScript engine. Chapter eight contains all the leftovers that didn't fit into the other chapters, including annotations and the updates to the Collections classes.
Chapter nine, the final chapter, covers some changes in Java 7 that might have been overlooked such as the changes to dealing with files and the updates to exception handling.
Java SE 8 for the Really Impatient packs a surprising amount of depth into the new functional facilities of Java for such a short book. Other areas, like JavaFX, are given a great overview where any GUI developer can research the specifics as required.
I definitely recommend Java SE 8 for the Really Impatient to any Java programmer looking to take advantage of the new features of Java 8

Lambda Expressions for Kindle specified as >- in lieu of ->
By Michael Funk
I just downloaded the Kindle edition. And all the lambda expressions are specified incorrectly as >- in lieu of ->. Perhaps, someone at Amazon can have this error corrected. Because I'm sure it's a fine book, otherwise.

What it says - quick, detailed review of Java 8
By Dave the Rave
I like this book and I like the format -- just give me the stuff that's new in this version of the software, Java in this case. I've had major frustrations with tech books that are 500 pages long and 450 of those pages are background from earlier versions that I already know.
This format is different and this book does it well.
Lambdas, streams, Nashorn, etc. A chapter on each of the chunks of Java that are new in version 8. It goes deep, quickly, so if you're a beginner this isn't a book for you. But if you've been programming in Java for a few years and need a decent introduction to the new features of the language, you'll get your money's worth.
