Ruthless: (Mob Boss Book One) (Volume 1), by Michelle St. James

"A masterful romance of deep dark suspense, complicated emotions, and exciting action." - New York Times bestseller, M.J. Rose

Two years out of college, Angelica Bondesan spends her time working as a barista, keeping in touch with her prodigal brother, and trying to figure out how to bridge the gap with her father, a wealthy real estate developer.

But all of that changes the night she’s kidnapped. Thrown into a windowless room, Angelica is positive there’s been some kind of mistake — until she meets Nico Vitale.

Gorgeous and frightening, Nico became the boss of New York City’s Vitale crime family after the execution style murder of his parents two years earlier. Since then he’s turned the old-school mob into a sleek, modern army of ruthless men who understand that physical violence — while always an option — isn’t the only way to get what you want.

Now Angel is forced to face the truth;

Her father is not the man she believed him to be.

Nico Vitale is dangerous, possibly lethal.

She is falling in love with Nico Vitale.

Cliffhanger
By Deborah
The blurb hooked me straight away, I quickly scanned a few of the reviews and they were good so I couldn't wait to start.
Now I'll skip my usual summary since there's already a lot of reviews summarising it better than I could, I'll just give my opinion, which is mixed, very mixed.
As I've said I loved the blurb and the idea behind this book and even though I read this in one sitting I always felt something was missing.
Nico, I liked Nico as a man but he wasn't the character I pictured as the boss of a crime family.
Angelica, she annoyed me endlessly and I got so frustrated with her inability to even consider the fact that her father obviously wasn't the man she thought he was.
The story was light and I think this was part of what was missing for me.
I didn't feel any real connection or chemistry between Angel and Nico.
As for the ending, yes I should have checked I know it says book one but I didn't realise it was a cliffhanger and I can't honestly see me continuing on I just can't face more Angelica.

Nail-biting, heart-pounding romance
By Sarah by the Sea
I was up until 5:00 AM reading this book, sacrificing sleep for fiction -- always a sign of a great story! I was instantly swept up in Nico and Angel's whirlwind romance, and couldn't go to bed until I turned the last page (and now I'm sure book 2, Fearless: Mob Boss Book Two, will cost me another night's sleep).

St. James is a hot new author on the adult romance front, and her writing is smooth, evocative, and well-plotted. I loved the complexity of the characters -- Angel is at times vulnerable, but also headstrong and resourceful. No matter how dire her situation, she never gives up hope, and always tries her best to assess, make plans, and take action rather than becoming a victim. I loved watching her struggle against her developing feelings for Nico -- her kidnapper -- knowing she wouldn't be able to resist his charms for long.

Nico is not your daddy's mob boss, that's for sure! With heartbreaking vulnerabilities of his own -- not to mention a fierce protective streak and a kind heart beneath all the tough stuff, he's the kind of serious bad boy you can't help but root for. Despite his lifestyle and family history, he really does have a good heart, and you can see him really wrestling with his family loyalties, his need to appear fierce to his enemies, his own sense of right and wrong, and his growing feelings for Angel, the daughter of a rival mob boss.

Of course, mixing business and pleasure hardly ends well! ;-)

The story is the first in a series, and is fast-paced and well developed -- perfect for readers who like their romance steamy with a shot of adrenaline and intrigue.

modern day mob like Romeo & Juliet
By Shawna Shauntia
Why is Ruthless my first experience with Mob book. I think I have a new genre that I adore. To make things even better I found a new author that I’ll be checking for. It goes without question Michelle St. James has made herself a contender with this debut.

Angelica Bondesan is more than content with her hushed lifestyle. Working at a local barista. One night after closing up the quiet life she knew will forever change her. After having a bag placed over her head and waking up in a strange room with her brain full of so many questions? Who are you people? Why did you take me? What do you want?

New head of the Vitale family Nico has a vendetta to settle with the man he believes killed his parents all he need is the proof. Going against the rules of the syndicate he takes the man’s daughter is hopes of drawing him out. I have to admit I wasn’t exactly impressed with Nico as a mobster, but more so as a gentleman. He has this soft manner about him when I require more alpha.

Ruthless is told with a dual POV which works very well considering both Angelica and Nico are both looking for answers to the dilemma that has forced their paths to crossed. Nico is looking to Angelica about the man she didn’t know had a second life - her father who also has mafia ties. Refusing to believe her father could be a part of Nico’s world, Angelica is convince a mistake has been made.

The romance between the two come with much resistance both as time passes the battle of their attraction overwhelms their logic. In a way Ruthless reminded me of a modern day mob like Romeo & Juliet story. Two people from opposite sides torn by loyalty to their family and love.

While some reviews mention that Ruthless has a cliffhanger I would disagree with that. Ms. St. James definitely leaves the door open for more to come, which it is, but if not I would be satisfied. Who am I kidding I would still want to know more.
