The isolated Aleutian Islands became stepping stones to the United States for the Japanese military during World War II. Their thrust was terminated by bitter battles in 1943, but in the late 1950s, another threat emerged -- the Cold War. Once again, the Aleutian islands became a battlefield-an electronic battlefield for the most sophisticated monitoring and highly secretive electronic gathering equipment then in existence. Because of intense Arctic cold and extreme winds the unique and massive monitoring equipment had to be strong and function during snow, sleet and winds over 120 mph, while personnel who manned and maintained them were also subject to identical conditions. Aircraft for secret reconnaissance missions had to launch and land under inconceivable conditions and on occasion, some did not return or crashed. Additionally, reconnaissance aircraft were subject to hostile fighters and anti-aircraft missiles. The highly restricted devices, capable of detecting objects in space and apparatus to monitor satellites and missiles have never been photographed or discussed other than by authorized operating personnel prior to the release of this book. Permission for its release has been authorized by the United States National Security Administration.

About the Author
Gerald W. Butler, a captain in the Massachusetts State Guard, was the former curator of Fort Warren and Fort Independence, Boston Harbor, and Fort Rodman, New Bedford. He has published Military Annals of Nahant, Massachusetts and periodicals on seacoast fortifications. He lectures and serves as a consultant to military museums and state parks, was the former historian for U.S. Navy mine units, and his illustrations of seacoast fortifications are published worldwide. He resides in Nahant.

A disappointment due to multiple factual errors and inadequate editing

I respect the author’s personal experience at the Rock from 1962 to 1963. I was there from 1987-1989, and flew the missions he incorrectly describes.
p 103 drawing is clearly a Cobra Ball and NOT the Rivet Amber/Lisa Ann (note dipole telemetry antenna not used on the RC-135E)
p 104 says following deployment of 663 Rivet Ball II (it was NEVER Rivet Ball II) that 3 RC-135Ds entered USAF service. These had been in service since 1962 as KC-135A-IIs and were redesignated RC-135Ds in 1965, 5 years before CB II Minimum arrived at The Rock, and had *nothing* to do with the CB Burning Star mission. They operated out of Eielson AFB as part of Burning Candy/Cotton Candy, and rarely visited Shemya.
p 105 says RC-135X Cobra Eye was reconfigured into an RC-135S in 1993, but lower on the page says that the Cobra Eye remained on station at Shemya (by presidential directive) through 1995. It can't be both. In fact, it was stored at Majors Field from 1993 through 1995, and narrowly escaped conversion to a TC-135 trainer. In 1995 it became CB II in honor of the original CB II, 664, lost 15 Mar 81 at PASY.
p 105 text says "At present" the US Army operates a Boeing 767 AOA. According to Boeing, the airplane retired in 2003, but the book was published in 2015.
Caption on p 114 says Neptune but image is a Mercator.
Only one unofficial source (globalsecurity.org) ever used the possessive term Queen’s Match, and it appears only once in a sidebar there, likely a misprint. According to Shemya records and Boeing documents (who provided the missile and integration) it was Queen Match.
Back cover: "Prior to release of this book...detailed information regarding Shemya's highly restricted devices had never been published other than in official documentation.” Fully declassified operations at Shemya from the 1940s have been widely published in books and magazine articles on early Alaskan airpower in WW2, scholarly research by Jeff Richelson (American Espionage and the Soviet Target), journalistic studies by Bill Burrows (Deep Black), the exceptionally valuable Big Safari History by Bill Grimes, and Larry Tart's outstanding multivolume Freedom Through Vigilance series, all available on Amazon. Even Tom Clancy wrote about the Cobra Belle in his novel Cardinal of the Kremlin.
This could have been a much better book, but even at $1.60 it’s not worth getting the wrong information.

The Story of a Near Artic Island

This book leaped out at me because I did my overseas deployment on Shemya from January 1963 to January 1964. It was a very unusual place. It is the only place I have ever heard of where one can experience heavy fog, tremendous winds, and snow, sleet, or rain all at once. We once endured a storm where the wind speed was measured at 105 mph when the anemometer blew away. The work we did was fascinating. I would not have traded my experience there for anything, although I did not appreciate it nearly as much then as I do now. The Army, Air Force, and Navy people working on Shemya can be justifiably proud of what they contributed to our winning the Cold War.

Unknown Base Revealed

Excellent coverage of the subject and very well illustrated.
Some of the sections dealing with Signals Intelligence were
brief - apparently due to security concerns. A good book.
