A History of Financial Crises: Dreams and Follies of Expectations (Economics as Social Theory), by Cihan Bilginsoy

"Once-in-a-lifetime" financial crises have been a recurrent part of life in the last three decades. It is no longer possible to dismiss or ignore them as aberrations in an otherwise well-functioning system. Nor are they peculiar to recent times. Going back in history, asset price bubbles and bank-runs have been an endemic feature of the capitalist system over the last four centuries. The historical record offers a treasure trove of experience that may shed light on how and why financial crises happen and what can be done to avoid them - provided we are willing to learn from history.

This book interweaves historical accounts with competing economic crisis theories and reveals why commentaries are often contradictory. First, it presents a series of episodes from tulip mania in the 17th century to the subprime mortgage meltdown. In order to tease out their commonalities and differences, it describes political, economic, and social backgrounds, identifies the primary actors and institutions, and explores the mechanisms behind the asset price bubbles, crashes, and bank-runs. Second, it starts with basic economic concepts and builds five competing theoretical approaches to understanding financial crises. Competing theoretical standpoints offer different interpretations of the same event, and draw dissimilar policy implications.

This book analyses divergent interpretations of the historical record in relation to how markets function, the significance of market imperfections, economic decision-making process, the role of the government, and evolutionary dynamics of the capitalist system. Its diversetheoretical and historical content of this book complements economics, history and political science curriculum.

Review
"[A] rare and praiseworthy achievement...should be widely and carefully read; it is highly instructive concerning not only the details of past financial crises but also the diverse ways they have been interpreted by academic economists."Journal of Markets and Morality

From the Inside Flap
This is a lucid and illuminating book with much to teach both the student and instructor. It comes as close to a page turner as a book on finance and economics can be. The approach adopted of first documenting financial crises and then explaining those using alternative theoretical approaches is very effective. This method applied as a climax of the book to the 2007-2008 financial crisis successfully reinforces earlier lessons.

This book offers and employs a rich theoretical framework for examining, assessing and understanding the multiplicity of forces generating specific crises over an especially long run - from tulip mania and the Mississippi Bubble all of the way up to what the author coins as "The Latest Act: The Crash of the 2000s." In my judgment, Bilginsoy has authored an especially comprehensive, thorough, and readable book on the subject of crisis and crises.

This new volume by Cihan Bilginsoy will take its place alongside Kindleberger and Aliber's "Manias, Crashes, and Panics" and Reinhart and Rogoff's "This Time It's Different" as a valuable introduction to the financial booms and crashes which continue to shape our world. While "Manias, Crashes, and Panics" focuses attention on market and international dynamics, and "This Time It's Different" on sovereign debt, Bilginsoy goes beyond these texts in his recounting of the historical background and institutional mechanics of a wide range of boom-crash episodes, and in his comprehensive discussion of economists' debates about why they happened. Indeed, a great strength of this book is its author's even-handed approach to different economic points of view: readers can think along with established experts about the deeper logic of these events. Consequently, this book - written to be accessible to non-economics university students - will be equally valuable for professional economists and investors.

Revelation of the Magi: The Lost Tale of the Wise Men’s Journey to Bethlehem, by Brent Landau

“Astonishing, delightful, and theologically sophisticated.” —Marvin Meyer, Griset Professor of Religious Studies, Chapman University

Theologian Brent Landau presents the ancient account of Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar, the three “wise men” who journeyed to Bethlehem to greet the birth of Jesus. The Revelation of the Magi offers the first-ever English translation of an ancient Syriac manuscript written in the second to third century after the birth of Christ and safeguarded for generations in the Vatican Library. Following in the footsteps of Elaine Pagels and her exploration of the Gnostic Gospels, including the controversial Gospel of Judas, Landau delivers an invaluable source of information to a world interested in learning more about the Nativity and the life of Jesus of Nazareth.

From Booklist
The tale of the Magi, or the Three Wise Men, is one of the most famous stories associated with the birth of Jesus. But as Landau points out, only one brief passage in the New Testament’s Gospel of Matthew is actually about the Magi. Even there the details are frustratingly vague: the wise men have no names, nor are their countries of origin indicated. But one source does exist, a lengthy narrative called Revelation of the Magi, which tells the story from the perspective of the wise men themselves. This slim volume is purported to be the first-ever English translation of the elusive tale. Landau, a scholar of ancient biblical languages, discovered the document while doing research at the Vatican Library. Ignored or neglected by contemporary scholars and written in Syriac, a language spoken by ancient Christians in the Middle East and Asia, Revelation of the Magi should be of interest to not only biblical scholars but also students of the Christian story who want to know more about these elusive fellows. --June Sawyers

Review
“Of the many recently discovered earliest Christian documents, Revelation of the Magi is by far the most fascinating. Landau’s presentation—bright and sharp as a gemstone—emphasizes the unique challenge and radical depth of this ancient text’s theology.” (John Dominic Crossan, author of Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography and The Greatest Prayer)

“The fascinating story of the Wise Men from the East who came to see baby Jesus is presented, for the first time in English, in a remarkable new version based on an ancient Syriac text, and the result is a tale that is astonishing, delightful, and theologically sophisticated.” (Marvin Meyer, author of Gospels of Mary)

“Unread for centuries, the Revelation of the Magi retells the Biblical story of three wise men who visited Jesus at his birth, expanding their minor role into an epic tale. In a new, lucid translation, Landau offers English readers a chance to hear this remarkable story for the first time.” (Karen L. King, author of the Secret Revelation of John)

“This lovely text, skillfully translated and accompanied by expert commentary shows that early Christians approached the Christmas story with refreshing creativity. Landau is to be congratulated for bringing this important and unexpectedly influential work to light.” (Jennifer Knust, author of Unprotected Texts)

“Revelation of the Magi should be of interest to not only biblical scholars but also students of the Christian story who want to know more about these elusive fellows.” (Booklist)

“For all of [The Wise Men’s] popularity, the mysterious travelers from the East ... appear in only one short passage in the New Testament. Now, a first-ever English translation and detailed analysis of a little-known eighth-century text uncovers a far more substantial version of the wise men story.” (USA Today)

“This year a number of Christmas stockings will no doubt be stuffed with a copy of a beautiful little book, Revelation of the Magi. ...Quite luminous and wonderful... Like incense, the pages radiate divine grace, mercy, and love. They seem infused with light, glory, majesty, epiphany, and joy.” (Day 1.org)

“Landau shows, with skill and authority, how the “Revelation” contains a valuable message of tolerance that is needed as much today as in the years of its composition.” (Los Angeles Times (online))

While this familiar tale is recorded in the Gospel of Matthew, another little-known version later emerged that claimed to be the eyewitness account of the wise men. This ancient manuscript has lain hidden for centuries in the vaults of the Vatican Library, but through the determined persistence of a young scholar, Brent Landau, this astonishing discovery has been translated into English for the very first time as the Revelation of the Magi.

Everything we know about the wise men is based on only a few verses from the Bible. With the Revelation of the Magi, we can now read the story from the Magi's perspective. Readers will learn of the Magi's prophecies of God's incarnation from the beginning of time, their startling visitation in the form of a star, the teachings they receive from the baby Jesus, and the wise men's joyous return to their homeland to spread the good news.

This ancient version of the Christmas story is guaranteed to astonish and delight. It will also raise larger questions of the significance and meaning of Christ's birth, and the mission to spread the good news to every corner of the globe. All the drama and intrigue of the brief description of Jesus's birth in the Bible is filled out in greater, more colorful detail, offering for the first time the complete story of these beloved characters.

BEYOND THE BIBLE: AN ANCIENT REVELATION OF THE MAGI
By RBSProds
Four REVEALING Stars! This unusually fantastic story is not the traditional Christmas season story of the Three Wise Men bearing gold, frankincense, and myrrh and seeking the Christ Child. This is the first English translation of the only known manuscript of the apocryphal "The Revelation of the Magi": a lengthy document written in the Syriac language probably by at least 2 authors. It had been relatively unknown to the general public until found by author, educator, and theological research expert Dr. Brent Landau in the Vatican archives. The entire book is a very scholarly work which is divided into: an introduction dealing with how the author located and translated the document; the translation of "The Revelation of the Magi" itself with 32 relatively short chapters; and then conclusive commentary, analyses, and questions. These Magi, although their origin may differ, seem to generally travel the same path contained in the synoptic Gospel of Matthew and the general trajectory of: following the "star"; encountering Jesus, Mary, and Joseph; and ending with their journey home. But the wildly-miraculous specifics vary far beyond what is in traditional Christmas plays and the Gospels. Indeed, "The Revelation of the Magi", goes as far back as Genesis and as far forward as an encounter between the Magi and one of the disciples of Jesus evangelizing the Gentiles, years after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus. The document's Nativity chronology between the Magi and the Holy Family is highly unusual and suspect. Those adhering to the strict interpretation of the Bible (Sola scriptura) may want to avoid this version of the wise men which may expose them to its divergent religious views within the document and in the author's astute probing theological questions: although this mostly 'first-person plural' story uses many well-known synoptic biblical thoughts & prophesy. Those of a more 'liberal Biblical bent', other believers, non-believers, and other religions may be interested and astounded by this unusually fantastic story and outlying apologetics and commentary. Very Definitely Recommended as an impressive intellectual feat of translation, analysis, and scholarship, with a strong caution to strict biblical-interpretation Christians as possibly too far-fetched and controversial for them & other modern-day Christians. In the end, as in my case, curiosity may win out. An AMAZING story. Four APOCRYPHAL Stars! (Reviewed as an Amazon.com Kindle digital download: across Mac, text-to-speech, and iPhone modes.)

A Fun New Testament Midrash
By Nathan P. Gilmour
When I discovered Midrash as an undergraduate Bible minor, I was immediately fascinated. The Rabbinic practice of expanding upon the Biblical text, providing details and linking characters based on linguistic connections (the old Rabbis did not believe in linguistic coincidence) seemed to me, someone freshly interested in postmodern philosophy and reader-response literary criticism, as evidence that those impulses were neither novel nor illegitimate but simply forgotten in the heady days of the Enlightenment. (I've since made peace with the Enlightenment, but I still think that the best of what we call postmodern has roots in Rabbinic and Scholastic practices.) When in seminary I discovered that our library had a multi-volume collection of Rabbinic Midrashim, I made a point of visiting those volumes every chance I got, and although I never did work them into my thesis, they were a companion to me all through my seminary years.

The Revelation of the Magi, although it's a Syriac Christian text rather than an Aramaic Rabbinic text, has the same impulse as do those wonderul Midrashim: they take a tale of only twelve verses, a story whose characters have no origin save a direction (east) and a title (Magi) and whose plot tails off without any concern for what happens to them after they leave Bethlehem (T.S. Eliot poem notwithstanding) and crafts a wonderful and fantastic (in some older senses of both of those words) narrative that, until recently, remained untranslated from Syriac, waiting in the Vatican Library for Brent Landau to come along and put it in my hands.

Because my own scattershot history-reading always informs my Bible-reading, I've assumed for some time that the Magi from Matthew must have borne some relation to the Magi in Herodotus, the old ruling class of the Persian Empire. In my own imagination, their appearance, even had they not mentioned the phrase "King of the Jews," would have made Herod quite nervous: after all, he had just been installed as King of the Jews by Marc Antony at the culmination of a bloody war with the Hellenized Parthian Empire. No doubt Herod would have recognized that the Magi were prominent persons in that still-looming empire, and when they started proclaiming that a new "King of the Jews" was on the way, he predictably took that as a threat to his own precarious throne.

The Magi in Revelation of the Magi (RM), it turns out, are not those Magi. Using etymology that Landau cannot discern in Syriac or Greek, RM explains to the reader that they're called Magi because they pray in silence. The text is not unaware of the Persian Magi or that the term Magi had come to mean simply "sorcerer" in popular usage. In fact, they have to deal with the inhabitants of Jerusalem's mistaking them for those Magi when they arrive in the city. But these Magi do not come merely from east of Bethlehem or from "the east" connoting former Persian lands; these Magi come from Shir, a legendary land at the far Eastern extreme of the world, a place where Seth, the third son of Adam, traveled with his aging father and learned the secrets of true worship lest they be lost in the fallen world. These Magi have lived near The Mountain of Victories and kept Adam's secrets in The Cave of Treasures of Hidden Mysteries for generations, waiting for the appearance of the star that Adam prophesied would bring them salvation from the evils of the world. And so they do, for generations, until a star appears to them while they're in the cave.

So that folks will want to read this book, I'll refrain from further plot summary, but as the story develops, and as the Magi travel from Shir to Jerusalem and then to Bethlehem, the Syriac writer(s) weave throughout the story phrases and motifs from the New Testament, demonstrating an exquisite artistry with the sacred text that is a delight to read even for those who "know how the story ends." And to prove that old texts have their own warped sense of humor, there's even a baby-switch gag in which Mary panics because she sees one of the Magi's mystical vision of Christ and thinks that he's kidnapped baby Jesus. Of course, when she finds the real Jesus back where he should be, the infant gives her a long speech providing her anxious soul comfort. (Yes, you did just read that. You really want to check it out now, don't you?)

Landau's translation, whose endnotes provide an exhaustive set of New Testament cross-references (which are not as useful because Harper saw fit to cut the pages unevenly for archaic feel rather than for endnote-checking ease), does not shy away from familiar King-James-flavored constructions, and the experience is a genuinely enjoyable Midrash on a familiar mini-episode from the New Testament.

Were this review simply of Landau's translation and scholarly apparatus, I would have few reservations. However, his introductory and concluding essays make some moves that I really ought to call into question. In the midsection of the story, when the star appears to the Magi and beckons them to Jerusalem, the mystical Christ speaks about his omnipresence and ability to appear to the folks in Shir:

And I am everywhere, because I am a ray of light whose light has shone in this world from the majesty of my Father, who has sent me to fulfill everything that was spoken about me in the entire world and in every land by unspeakable mysteries, and to accomplish the commandment of my glorious Father, who by the prophets preached about me t the contentious house, in the same way as for you, as befits your faith. (13:10)

Landau's footnote to this verse as well as the volume's concluding essay point to this as evidence of an early "theology of the world's religions" and speculates that the final episodes in RM might have been later scribal addenda geared towards taking the sting out of such an intellectual novelty. The problem I see with Landau's approach is that he seems to apply a very modern understanding of "faith" without giving any lexical justification. In modern times, of course, phrases like "interfaith dialogue" and "faith-based organizations" are relatively commonplace: "a faith" in this language-game is Islam, Christianity, or something bearing resemblance to them, and there are a plurality of "faiths" in the world. In legal systems that recognize a plurality of incommensurable "faiths" or "religions," such a use makes perfect sense, but in an intellectual context that knows syncretism but not pluralism, such a move seems strange.

Landau's use of "faith" has some English attestations in the Middle English period (OED places one such use in the fourteenth century but does not find another until the mid-sixteenth), but I could not find any such use indicated in Danker's Greek-English lexicon, and I wish Landau had provided some evidence that Syriac as a language was in fact making late-medieval moves rather than just assuming that fifth-century "faith" was the sort of nineteenth-century "faith" that he seems to assume. More plausible, I would think, would be something related to the ancient use of the Greek pistis to signify a complex relationship between political loyalty, existential orientation, and public confession. After all, that use of "according to his faith" is already present in the Pauline literature, and there's less of a stretch involved if one assumes (yet) another Pauline echo rather than imposing modern-era religious pluralism on the ancient text.

One ought not judge a book by its front-matter, and in the spirit of letting the old book stand on its own, I can recommend this text for a fascinating look into the Midrashic mind of early Christianity. For the sake of disclosure (and to explain the post title), HarperOne did contact the CHP hosts about reviewing this book, and I did receive my copy free of charge. My review here, as in all my book reviews, is the truth as best I can tell it, and I did not think differently or pretend to think differently because I got a new book.

enter wise guys, stage east
By Kevin Fuller
What a wonderful Legend! An apocryphal lost book recovered from the Vatican archives just in time for Christmas 2010!

This is the story of the Nativity, yet not told in the third person, rather in the first, from the point of view of the Magi themselves.

I will not go into the history of the book as the author does, but will cover some of the highlights. The Magi are not magicians from Persia, but are 'silent prayers', descended from Adam and Seth. Sprinkled with tantalizing theological tidbits (there is no original sin), the text summarizes the trek of the Magi from their 'country of the farthest East' to Jerusalem and on to Bethlehem. Christ is revealed to be pre-existent, as is the Nativity Star. I will not reveal the origin of the Star, but will leave it to the reader to discover for himself. But I will say this...what a fascinating read!

Much here to digest, as the story is written simply, yet covers much complex Truth.

5 Klovers - Courtesy of CK2S Kwips & Kritiques
By Jennifer A. Ray
Whether Wolf or human, Mason Dillinger has never had to work at attracting a woman before - females have just naturally flocked to him. Now he has found his mate - however unwillingly - and he must actually woo the woman, all while keeping her fragile human body in one piece. See, there's this rogue werewolf Mason is hunting, and that rogue would like nothing better than to exact his vengeance on Mason by destroying everything he loves.

But Mason isn't new to this game. As a Blood Runner, he's old hat at tracking and killing rogue werewolves - those that have developed a penchant for killing humans. And with the beautiful Torry's pretty neck on the line, Mason will stop at nothing to ensure her safety - even if it means his own life.

When the trail of the killer points to a threat much larger than one lone rogue werewolf, it will take everything he's got to keep them both alive.

Rhyannon Byrd was one of the first authors I discovered when I began reading the romance genre almost two years ago. With captivating plotlines and engaging characters, she immediately became one of my favorite romance writers. When I heard she had finally published several books through major New York publisher Silhouette Nocturne, I was beyond ecstatic, both for her and for myself, as a fan of her work. While her eBook releases have been wonderful, this new avenue in her career can only mean good things for her fans. More exposure equals more sales, which means more books - it is a win-win for both author and fans, right? *grin*

So now that you know how much I admire Rhyannon Byrd's previous work, let me tell you that the first book in her Blood Runners series, Last Wolf Standing, more than pleased me. She has done a beautiful job of conforming to Silhouette Nocturne's standard while still retaining her own writing voice.

This series is the tale of a werewolf pack, specifically the half-breeds - part human, part shifter - and their work to ferret out the growing menace to both the human and the shifter community. The half-breeds are looked down on by the pureblood shifters, who mandate that each half-breed must serve as a Blood Runner, hunting rogue werewolves. Only once each Blood Runner has caught a certain number of rogue shifters are they accepted into the pack with full rights.

Half-breed Mason Dillinger wants no part of the pack with its myriad politics or a commitment of any kind. He hunts the rogues for his own satisfaction, out of his own sense of responsibility and justice. The life he leads is not suited to that of a man with something to lose - like a mate. Needless to say, when he accidentally finds his own mate, he is ill-prepared for the moment, leading to a hilarious scene between him and Torrance. To the readers' never-ending entertainment, Mason is at a loss concerning how to approach his mate from the get-go. Of course, when it comes to the physical part of their relationship, he more than gains the upper hand... Torry has no defense for the intense sensuality between them, or Mason's skill in this area.

Torry is a bit of a loner. She has a few very close friends, but outside them, she keeps to herself. Although she's dated in the past, nothing could prepare her for the force of nature that is Mason. Regardless, it doesn't take her long to stand up to the intimidating Blood Runner, and she proves she can more than keep him on his toes over the long haul.

Both Mason and Torry grow throughout the course of this story. Torry finds a core of inner strength she previously had no cause to call on. Mason finds it within himself to love someone else - something he didn't think possible. Watching their individual journeys alongside the one they take together is absolutely inspiring.

Throughout the book, the plot twists more and more, with new mysteries brought to light even as others are solved. Dissapointing!
By Rachel K.
Well, I just finished reading the book in question last night, and my thoughts were, "I'm going to hurry up and finish this so I can put it on my shelf and never look at it again."

The book started off well, and the plot seemed interesting at first. Torrence, the likeable heroine of the book, is being stalked by an evil, insane werewolf because she is linked by a bond to Mason. Yeah, that makes sense. Torrence has thoughts and feelings that could be sympathized with, and Mason seemed human (which is funny, being that he is not).

But the book nose-dived about halfway through. At first I started thinking things like, "Wait a second, there's a crazy werewolf running around, haven't these guys got anything better to do than sit around teasing Mason about Torrence? Apparently not. Even in the middle of fight scenes Mason and Torrence are still swooning over each other? Do all werewolves have ADD?

There are also some pretty big plot holes. One question in particular I kept wondering, `If werewolves can be lifemates with a human, then why is it so frowned upon in werewolf society to be half human?' I guess maybe if I understood the bonding thing more I might figure it out, but as it stands it doesn't make sense, other than to spice up the story with the idea of forbidden love.

The book slowly progressed into, `Oh Torrence, Oh Mason' and a lot of poetic descriptions of various aspects of Torrences hair and eyes until I just stopped reading. As I said, the only reason I finished it was to get it off of my pile of books to be read and back onto the shelf where I could forget about it.

The worst thing is, for a romance novel, there is very little actual sex, and a lot of Torrence and Mason mooning over each other. Yeah, pun intended.

So I end with, if you really like super-sappy romance, this book is good for you. If you were hoping for a more in-depth werewolf book, not so much. If you wanted steamy sex, skip to the last few pages at the end. No really, I'm serious. I'm giving this book two stars because it built some good characters and a good foundation for what might have been a good story. Too bad the train ran off of the tracks.

Better than average mared by weak plot saved by good characters and erotic scenes
By G. Robinson
The characters here are well drawn but could be better. The plot is pretty much bad guys attack good guys, good guys kill bad guys,.... There is an interesting plot twist near the end but still linear. A number of editorial errors mar the story but none really obtrusive. Some moose tracks (we went looking for Moose and found fresh tracks but none were seen there) floating anticedant.

Good erotic scenes not up to the very best but better than average. Little humor. Overall a good read that is better than average for the genre but not hugely.

Slaughterhouse: The Shocking Story of Greed, Neglect, and Inhumane Treatment Inside the U.S. Meat Industry, by Gail A. Eisnitz

Slaughterhouse is the first book of its kind to explore the impact that unprecedented changes in the meatpacking industry over the last twenty-five years — particularly industry consolidation, increased line speeds, and deregulation — have had on workers, animals, and consumers. It is also the first time ever that workers have spoken publicly about what’s really taking place behind the closed doors of America’s slaughterhouses.
In this new paperback edition, author Gail A. Eisnitz brings the story up to date since the book’s original publication. She describes the ongoing efforts by the Humane Farming Association to improve conditions in the meatpacking industry, media exposs that have prompted reforms resulting in multimillion dollar appropriations by Congress to try to enforce federal inspection laws, and a favorable decision by the Supreme Court to block construction of what was slated to be one of the largest hog factory farms in the country.
Nonetheless, Eisnitz makes it clear that abuses continue and much work still needs to be done

Review
"As Eisnitz convincingly shows, the meat industry is indifferent to animal suffering, exploitative of its workers, and liable to produce a product that is riddled with dangerous bacteria. Whether you eat meat or not — if you care about humans or animals — this book is a must read."
Peter Singer, Princeton University
Author of In Defense of Animals and Animal Liberation

"This book penetrates the veil of psychic numbing that keeps us oblivious to the real truth behind modern meat. If you want to remain a prisoner of your own ignorance, don't read it. It will make you aware. It will wake you up. It will change your life." ."
John Robbins, Founder of the EarthSave Foundation

From the Back Cover
What started out, with a single complaint about a Florida slaughterhouse turned into a tale of intrigue and suspense as investigator Gail A. Eisnitz unearthed more startling information about the meat and poultry Americans consume. This shocking story follows Eisnitz as she becomes submerged in a slaughterhouse subculture, venturing deeper and deeper into the lives of the workers. As the stakes become higher in her David-and-Goliath-type battle, this determined young woman finds herself courageously taking on one of America's most powerful industries. Slaughterhouse takes readers on a frightening but true journey from one slaughterhouse to another throughout the country. Along the way we encounter example after example of mistreated animals...intolerable working conditions...lax standards...the slow, painful deaths of children killed as a result of eating contaminated meat...the author's battle with the major television networks...and a dangerously corrupt federal agency that chooses to do nothing rather than risk the wrath of agribusiness...before the whole affair is blown wide open in this powerful expose. In an effort to understand how such rampant violations could occur right under the noses of U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors - the individuals charged with enforcing humane regulations in slaughterhouses - Eisnitz examines the inspectors' track record for enforcing meat and poultry safety regulations, their primary responsibility. Following a long paper trail, she learns that contaminated meat and poultry are pouring out of federally inspected slaughterhouses and, not surprisingly, deaths from foodborne illness have quadrupled in the United States in the lastfifteen years. Determined to tell the whole story, Eisnitz then examines the physical price paid by employees working in one of America's most dangerous industries. In addition to suffering disfiguring injuries and crippling repetitive motion disorders, employees describe tyrannical working conditions in which grievances are met with severe reprisals or dismissals.

Eisnitz was the driving force behind a front-page expos in The Washington Post documenting slaughterhouse atrocities. The Washington Post reporter later described Eisnitz as "the most courageous investigator I’ve ever seen." The story was one of the highest reader-response pieces ever run by The Washington Post.

Corruption and cruelty of factory slaughterhouses exposed
By A Customer
Ms. Eisnitz is frank and candid in her exposure of the uglier side of factory farming. Slaughter of live animals is never pretty, but in many of the USDA supervised plants, the conditions are unbelievably cruel and digustingly filthy. The workers are exploited, placed in harm's way, and are treated little better than the animals they have to process. The animals themselves meet terribly slow deaths when stun bolts fail and stick pit knives don't cut deep enough to allow them to bleed to death before skinning and gutting. And if the cruelty isn't enough to grab you, wait until you read about the offal blocked drains that flood slaughterhouse floors with blood and fecal material. Wait until you read about manure being classified as a "cosmetic defect" that can simply be rinsed off and the meat passed off as USDA select to an unsuspecting public. This book will turn your stomach and make you angry.
You have probably already read many of the reviews and a majority of them come from vegans and vegetarians. Well, I'm not one of them. I raise meat animals and I eat meat. This book is important to me because I believe that Americans have a right to eat meat and not worry about it killing them with E. coli or Clostridia infections. I believe Americans should be able to believe that the USDA seal means the meat is safe and was killed in a humane fashion. Right now the American meat eating public is being betrayed by the USDA and "Slaughterhouse" details this with painstaking research and first-hand accounts.
"Slaughterhouse" is graphic and readers should expect it to be disturbing. But it is also very, very accurate. I've toured several slaughterhouses myself and found conditions similar to what Ms. Eisnitz has described. The USDA needs to step up enforcement of the Humane Slaughter Act, they need to POLICE the industry they oversee, not just sit idly by.
In short, this book might not make you a vegetarian, but it WILL make you an activist.

got feces?
By Amazon Customer
If you eat meat (in America), the answer is yes. Fact: Your tax dollars are helping to fund an organization (the USDA) that facilitates the CONSUMPTION OF FECES by you and your family on a daily basis. (Note: I am 46 and a vegetarian for just 2 weeks now, not a long-time veteran of PETA or any other animal rights group. My outrage is no less...) The USDA stamp/seal of approval is a colossal hoax perpetrated on the American public. The agency is, plain and simple, a timid puppet of the meat industry. (No wonder Europe doesn't want our poultry!) Paul & Linda McCartney's famous quote (Google it) has nothing on this book. If I had the resources, I would buy truckloads of this book and give them away. Gail Eisnitz jumps my list of people I'd most like to meet to Number One. What an incredibly brave woman. (And thank you Prometheus for having the stones to publish it.)
USDA: United States Death Agency or United States Disease Apathy. Take your pick. Either way, an absolute disgrace, blight, and embarrassment to all Americans.

the best book of its kind
By jar
This book, more than any other, is the reason why this vegetarian is slowly transitioning to veganism.

This book tells the haunting stories of slaughterhouse workers brave enough to sit for an interview with a remarkable undercover journalist, Gail A. Eisnitz. There is very little of Eisnitz in this book--she focuses largely on industry facts and the workers' stories, but the result is a book that gives voice to the animals beaten, burned alive, dismembered while conscious, left to starve, existing without space to move, tortured from birth to death.

The way the modern slaughterhouse works is not only incredibly cruel to the animals but dangerous for the workers. Their frustrations, unfortunately, are often taken out on the animals. Take it from a worker who put it this way: "See, I’m an ex-Marine. The blood and guts don’t bother me. It’s the inhumane treatment. There’s just so much of it."

The Bad Jesus: The Ethics of New Testament Ethics, by Hector Avalos

Did Jesus ever do anything wrong? Judging by the vast majority of books on New Testament ethics, the answer is a resounding No. Writers on New Testament ethics generally view Jesus as the paradigm of human standards and behaviour. But since the his-torical Jesus was a human being, must he not have had flaws, like everyone else? The notion of a flawless human Jesus is a paradoxical oddity in New Testament ethics. According to Avalos, it shows that New Testament ethics is still primarily an apologetic enterprise de-spite its claim to rest on critical and historical scholarship. The Bad Jesus is a powerful and challenging study, presenting de-tailed case studies of fundamental ethical principles enunciated or practised by Jesus but antithetical to what would be widely deemed 'acceptable' or 'good' today. Such topics include Jesus' supposedly innovative teachings on love, along with his views on hate, violence, imperialism, animal rights, environmental ethics, Judaism, women, disabled persons and biblical hermeneutics. After closely examining arguments offered by those unwilling to find any fault with the Jesus depicted in the Gospels, Avalos concludes that current treatments of New Testament ethics are permeated by a religiocentric, ethnocentric and imperialistic orientation. But if it is to be a credible historical and critical dis-cipline in modern academia, New Testament ethics needs to discover both a Good and a Bad Jesus.

The Bad Side of Jesus: He Was a Not Always A Good Boy
By John W. Loftus
“The Bad Jesus” is a 461 page monster of a book written by the prolific and indefatigable biblical scholar Dr. Hector Avalos. It's unlike any other scholarly book on the market today. It tells us the rest of the story of the Jesus we find in the four gospels, the dark side, the raw side that biblical scholars try to whitewash over because they think Jesus deserves special treatment.

Dr. Avalos, a giant of a man, a scholar's scholar, challenges readers to see what Jesus was really like. My guess is that people won't like Jesus after reading his book. I don't. He's not a guy I would want living next to me, or being around my children, or writing a column in a magazine, or politically involved in America that's for sure. No one should. Let's even have done with the notion Jesus was an over-all good person. I would want little to do with him. You might too after reading this wonderfully researched, one-of-a-kind book on an essential issue for Christianity.

In this book Avalos continues with a main theme of two of his previous books, the theological, ethical and political irrelevance of the Bible for the modern world. In The End of Biblical Studies (2007), he masterfully showed how biblical scholars are preoccupied with maintaining the relevance of the Bible for the modern world, even though their own research actually shows the opposite. In Slavery, Abolitionism, and the Ethics of Biblical Scholarship (2011), he expertly showed how modern biblical scholars are still unjustifiably defending the indefensible ethics of biblical slavery. In this new book Avalos takes on the over-all ethics of Jesus himself---Oh My---as represented in the four canonical gospels (irrespective of whether Jesus existed or not, which he remains an agnostic about). Avalos skillfully shows how the Jesus depicted in the New Testament has a bad side, a side permeated by a “religiocentric, ethnocentric and imperialistic orientation.” He reveals the bad side of Jesus that modern biblical scholars try to hide from view.

Here is how he states it:

“If one relied on most modern treatises of New Testament ethics, Jesus had no bad ideas, and never committed any bad deed. This cannot possibly be sustained if Jesus is viewed as a real historical human figure. If Jesus was a human being, he must have had some ideas that are ethically objectionable, or, at least, morally questionable. If Jesus was a human being, he must have had flaws, inconsistencies and hypocrisy in his moral system, just as does every other human being. If his followers, ancient or modern, believe that those ideas are applicable to their lives and to the lives of others, then it also raises the question of whether any of Jesus’ bad ideas also had bad consequences. If Jesus had some bad ideas, then imitating Jesus’ bad ideas could be a bad practice today. Given how much time historically has been spent on lauding the Good Jesus, this book centers on illuminating ‘the Bad Jesus’.” (pp. 29-30)

So why don’t most modern scholars consider Jesus to have done anything wrong or evil? Avalos:

“The answer, of course, is that most biblical scholars, whether in secular academia or in seminaries, still see Jesus as divine, and not as a human being with faults. Their Christology is high enough to exempt Jesus from any evil sentiments or ethical malpractice...Most New Testament scholars are affiliated with religious institutions and are part of what I have called an ecclesial-academic complex that has no counterpart in any other areas of the humanities. For example, most, if not all, scholars of Greek religion are not part of some Greek religious movement or organization. Despite biases that always exist in the study of the classics, it is fair to say that few have any personal stake in whether Zeus or Tiberius was good or bad because those entities don’t constitute any sort of authority for their actions. That is not the case with Jesus, who is still viewed as the paradigmatic authority for most Christian scholars. Such scholars are still studying Jesus through the confessional lenses of Nicea or Chalcedon rather than through an historical approach that we would use with other human beings.” (p.7)

Dr. Avalos is attempting to change how biblical scholars study the Bible by advocating a secular understanding of the biblical texts. Modern biblical scholars “do not treat the Bible as another ancient document such as Homer’s Iliad or The Epic of Gilgamesh.” (p. 23) But they should. They should do this to see what they get. It’s the only respectable way to study historical documents if we want to know the truth about them.

Hector's broader argument in his particular book contains several elements:

“1. Biblical scholarship is still primarily a religionist apologetic enterprise despite claims to be engaging in historico-critical and descriptive scholarship.
2. A more specific Christian orientation is clearly revealed in the manner in which the ethics of Jesus are predominantly viewed as benign and paradigmatic, even among supposedly secular academic scholars.
3. However, many of the fundamental ethical principles announced or practiced by Jesus actually would be antithetical to those we otherwise describe as ‘acceptable’ or ‘good’ by some of the most widely accepted standards of ethics today.
4. Accordingly, such a predominantly benign view of Jesus’ ethics signals a continuing acceptance of Jesus as divine or as morally supra-human, and not as the flawed human being who should be the real subject of historico-critical study.”(pp. 8-9)

His goal in the case studies he presents is to illustrate "the extent to which religionism, and more particularly a Christian bias, still permeates what are otherwise supposed to be historical-critical descriptive studies of the ethics of Jesus." (p. 27).

This book should change how biblical scholars view Jesus--many of whom are already liberals. We shouldn't give Jesus a free pass. There's a bad Jesus we need to see. Look and see for yourselves. It could be shocking. In the future when someone says Jesus was sinless, respond by saying "Bad Jesus." If someone holds up Jesus as an example of a good life, hold up Hector's book "Bad Jesus" in response. If someone asks, "What would Jesus do?," respond by asking them to read "Bad Jesus." It is the antidote to people who indefensibly think Jesus was a perfect human being. It is the corrective to believers who think we need a red-letter edition of the New Testament. It tells us the rest of the story, a story that most people and most Christians have never heard before.

Honest and unflinching
By Dan Barker
This is a wonderful book! Unflinching in its courage, "deep and wide" in its scholarship.

The western world is suffering from a huge blind spot -- the unquestioned myth that Jesus was all good. Where does that idea come from? I even know atheists who, while denying his divinity, still believe that the Christ was a great moral leader. After reading The Bad Jesus, they won't make that error any more.

Avalos' incisive research heals us of our cultural blind spot. Whether he was historical or merely legendary, the Jesus of the New Testament was, after all, a man, and men make mistakes. (And why is that not a compliment?) And some of the biggest mistakes are the ones made by the adoring scholars themselves, who have huge beams in their eyes as they fail to examine his purported words and actions objectively, like they do with other writers and literary characters.

I especially liked chapter 13, The Anti-Biblical Jesus. Since he got it so wrong with his own scriptures, how can we possibly trust Jesus with advice on how to live our lives? And I was impressed with Hector's demonstration in chapter 2, The Unloving Jesus, that the words "peace" and "love" do not mean in the New Testament what we take them to mean today. Shockingly, those are words of imperialism and violence. (Don't believe that? Read the book.)

If you read The Bad Jesus with a critical and demanding eye, you will be rewarded with a feast of facts. I LOVE this kind of book!

Avalos's writing is not destructive--it is actually brimming with ethical concern. The world deserves better than what Christianity has put on our tables. The emperor has no clothes, and Jesus has no shame. And neither do his cheerleaders.

Jesus was a moral lunatic.
By Ben
As Dr. Avalos defiantly points out, if New Testament historians commenting on the ethics of Jesus are doing real history, then why can’t they find a single thing wrong with Jesus as even a historical figure? That glaring omission on their part is just the tip of the iceberg.

This is “second wave” New Atheism (as Dr. Avalos calls it) at its finest. For those of us genuinely concerned about a reality based secular apocalypticism where Big Religion needs to die in order for humanity to collectively advance, I’d rate this book as an important contribution.

Dr. Avalos on a Freethought Radio podcast with Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor, suggested that he’s done the hard work of the research and that it’s up to others to promote the message. I heartily agree!

My main complaint is that I just wanted more of it.

Since I’ve done two public presentations on the immorality of Jesus, I was greatly excited to learn that Dr. Hector Avalos had tackled the same topic at the scholarly level. From my standpoint I certainly did the best I could at my own self-educated level (and I got my presentations approved by Dr. Richard Carrier just to make sure), but having Dr. Avalos do a thorough treatment on a number of case studies was educational and empowering. I was prepared to have gotten some things wrong of course which is inevitable, but I was delighted to see that we largely agree on the issues. Anyone that liked my presentations will find Dr. Avalos drilling deep to show that it just gets worse for Jesus.

Dr. Avalos has done a great service in cleaning house as far as Biblical studies go and he rigorously shows the rampant bias from even the more secular scholars on the topic of Jesus’ morality. If Jesus were portrayed as smoking pot in the New Testament, scholars would insist that he smoked, but didn’t inhale and that there is some incredible grammatical nuance baked into the text to “clearly” demonstrate this. It takes a very patient and diligent mind to unravel the scholarly sophistry and Dr. Avalos was clearly up to the job.

The real scandal of course is that canonical gospel Jesus, as is, is not only “flawed,” but most prominently presented as what modern ethical and educated people would call a superstitious, misogynistic, imperialistic cult leader and an apocalyptic moral lunatic. Jesus’ popularly apparent “pacifism” (what Dr. Avalos describes accurately as “deferred violence”) was merely the eye of the storm of endorsing Mosaic theocratic tyranny and the warm up act for (an albeit mythological) everlasting violence against most of humanity. You can’t just sweep Jesus’ persistent psychotic revenge fantasies under the rug and take the nice sounding bits out of that overall context. Jesus isn’t your nice grandma that is only technically on the hook for Biblical evils but has no personal stake in them. Jesus is THE guy who wants to lead the charge on his Judgment Day to set the majority of humanity on fire for all eternity. A disempowered earthly Jesus may be shown to have unleashed just a smidgen of that fury in the episode of making a whip and assaulting the moneychangers in the temple court (prominently shown on the cover of Dr. Avalos’ book).

In general, nothing repudiates the dubious and questionable ethics of Jesus more than substituting in different more ethical views on his behalf. And Dr. Avalos skewers the endless parade of motivated scholarship desperate to whitewash Jesus for the sake of their modern theological agendas or whatever other reason. When those biases are checked the end result, any reasonable person should agree that the literary product Jesus (what I would call “reading comprehension Jesus”) that the world is stuck with is the kind of street preaching nutjob that even most modern Christians wouldn’t want to hang out with and wouldn’t listen to. No doubt, still, many Christians will be eager and willing to come out against the U. N.’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the ethical stances of various other modern organizations that Dr. Avalos appeals to in ethical comparison (not to mention the same standards Jesus’ defenders will use on anyone else other than Jesus), but it will definitely be an uphill task for them to argue the modern world back into the Dark Ages.

Like every other influential person there ever was, Dr. Avalos points out that Jesus was a remix of what came before and a reflection of his given culture. A mix of mostly more of the same, some progress, and some regress. Dr. Avalos gives continual shout outs to the cultures that either got it right before Jesus or got it right instead of Jesus (or got it right in the ways disingenuous scholarship wants to *believe* Jesus got it rightest ever).

I will eagerly be blogging about each chapter and argument mapping any substantial debate that I can find. Come find me. Anyone that wants to contribute their reasoned perspective could be most appreciated. You will have to check your “Jesus is good no matter what” goggles at the door though.
