Richard Sand's 'Protocol' is a must-have reference book for any professional responsible for the planning and execution of high profile social events involving government officials, military personnel and/or corporate executives. As the director of marketing for a large Philadelphia law firm, I found 'Protocol' to be a practical and relevant resource. I wouldn't be without it.

Fritz Scholder, Beautiful Contradiction

Sometime in the 1970's, I saw a televised documentary on Fritz Scholder. In one scene the artist steps into into his studio where he selects a pre-stretched canvas and proceeds to paint in an explosion of creativity. The result was an image of an indian unlike any I had seen before. This was a raw, honest, direct and non-idealized impression of the American indian. It was unavoidably political even as it remained art of the highest order. This left an indelible impression. I have loved Scholder's work ever since.

"Fritz Scholder: Indian Not Indian, "by Lowery Stokes is a superb book. It is beautifully printed. The reproductions are well chosen and appropriate and the essays and commentary by: Kevin Gover, John Haworth, Lowery Stokes Sims, Paul Chaat Smith, Leslie Wasserberger, Richard W. Hill offer a well rounded perspective on the artist and his work.

Fritz Scholder was a man of contradictions with a dark and spiritual side. He was one quarter Luiseno indian, with a predominately German heritage. His father had been a Bureau of Indian Affairs administrator, but Fritz did not grow up on a reservation and for most of his career he did not paint indians or indian themes. Yet he became one of the first instructors at Institute of American Indian Arts, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

I highly recommend to anyone with an interest in Fritz Scholder, painting, American Indians, the southwest and New Mexico.

Great document of an important show

If you missed NMAI's show of the same name, Indian/Not Indian is an essential book to add to your art library. Lots of beautiful illustrations accompany the detailed and knowledgeable essays about Scholder, a uniquely modern and American painter.

As a committed portraitist for much of his career, Scholder's painting does not fit neatly into the story of heroic abstraction that often gets taught as "the" history of 20th c. painting in America. But the energetic brushwork and piercing intellect he brings to the canvas make his works profound, hilarious, and disturbing, often at the same time.

The essays and documentation in the book help us to understand Scholder's strange but unwavering commitment to sharing knowledge through teaching, to recasting the fate of the Native artist, and to creating a unique lexicon of his vision.

What the study reveals is that the conquered peoples themselves played a major role in the creation of these policies, and that these were based on long-standing traditions, customs, and institutions from earlier pre-Islamic cultures that originated in the worlds of both the conquerors and the conquered. In its connections to Roman, Byzantine, and Sasanian traditions, the book will appeal to historians of Europe as well as Arabia and Persia.

It was a well written book. I had seen the movie decades ago but had not read the novel. The book was received in the condition stated by the seller. I am satisfied.

I loved reading it when I was a resident!

Reread this book 50 years later and still liked it. Of course I can relate as a Jewish MD. On the other hand this depicts someone without much grace but with a lot of heart, a physician of the old school who uses his brain to make a diagnosis, who shuns the 8 to 5 multiple testing doctors of today. A great story.

Like da Vinci pencil-sketching a future masterpiece, Gerald Green used "The Last Angry Man" as a sort of scratch pad for "To Brooklyn with Love," a small but wonderful novel he would write a decade later. This earlier work is a character study-and a fine one-rich with textured detail and the colorful language of first-generation Americans and the other survivors of hardscrabble life in the postwar ghetto. Dr. Sam Abelman, who will reappear in the later book with little changed but his name, is angry. He rants about disease, poverty, intolerance and the absence of ambition; he resents the specialists who steal his two-dollar patients, and the patients who are too cheap to pay. He is a frontier physician with a heart of gold, a lovable curmudgeon who might be an angel with a better attitude and fewer Yiddish curses.
The plot isn't uniformly gripping. There is a particularly arid stretch in the third quarter. But this portrait of the gritty Brownsville section of Brooklyn and its inhabitants is infectious and real, and Green's generous prose takes us to a faraway time and place and culture as effectively as any time machine ever might. The trip is worth it.
