umm...what happened here?

Let me start by saying that Elle Casey is an insanely talented writer. I love her voice. I'm sad to give this less than a five star....because oh, how I loved Shine Not Burn. This book just mystified me, honestly. The hero and heroine came off as so immature to me. I had to keep reminding myself that she was almost 30, not 18. Ian is on her 'doo doo list'. For 30 seconds. Then he's just not. For no other reason that I can see except that he's hot and she wants to have fun with him while she's there. We have this huuuuuuuge buildup to them finally really kissing (umm not until 72%. WHAT?!), and it's just glossed over. ***Spoilers in the rest of this review...you've been warned*** And the primary conflict is how Andie has no girlfriends bc there's gossip about her in town. Wait. The conflict isn't even about the main characters? Maybe Andie should hint in the slightest that this bothers her before our heroine is out starting chick fights. And then he's just proposing. At her work. And she talks to every single person around her before addressing him and saying yes? Huh? I was so disappointed in this, maybe bc my expectations were so high after the Amazingness (yes, with a capital A) of Shine Not Burn. Please forgive me Ms. Casey, but I'm very glad this wasn't the first book I read by you...I don't think I would have come back for a second if it had been.

This book seriously made my ribs hurt

I love this author and as soon as I saw that this book was coming out my one click finger got twitchy. I knew I would not be disappointed because I absolutely loved the first, Shine Not Burn. What I wasn't expecting was I would freakin love this book a helluva lot more. I don't think there was one page where I wasn't on the verge of peeing my pants a little because my constant laughing, my ribs were so sore by the end of this book, I am serious I swear I popped a rib out.
The only negative thing I can say about this book is it had to end, I really hope Ms Casey decides she can continue their story, I know I would jump on its buns straight away.

I really enjoyed this book. It was witty and built the characters up quickly. I stayed up very late trying to finish it. What I really liked about the book was there was not that typical break up and heartache and then getting back together. There were some very steamy parts too. Fun, fast,read-

About the Author
John S. Townsend is the Susan and Bruce Worster Professor of Physics at Harvey Mudd College, the science and engineering college of the Claremont Colleges. He received his B.S. from Duke University, his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University, and was a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow.�He has been a visiting professor at Caltech, the University of Southampton in England, Duke University and Swarthmore College, and he was a Science Fellow at the Center for International Security and Arms Control at Stanford University. He loves teaching, especially quantum physics. Townsend is also the author of A Modern Approach to Quantum Mechanics.

I don't know what book the other reviewers read...

I used this book in a sophomore modern physics course. The book is an excellent introduction to modern physics and quantum mechanics. It eschews bra-ket notation and a more common historical approach for an intuition-based approach developed in the first chapter (the quantum nature of light) and continued throughout. The book, overall, emphasizes a qualitative as well as quantitative understanding of physical phenomena, providing an excellent foundation for a junior-level intermediate quantum mechanics course. Although occasionally chatty in tone, the book originates from the author's lecture notes from teaching the course, and as a result the sections are in bite-sized pieces. The occasional chattiness does not get in the way of rigorous derivations, though. I would strongly recommend this book to sophomore level physics students; its level is too elementary for a junior level course, but it serves as an intuitive introduction to the subject.

Great book for introductory course!

This book is not quite like all the other introductory quantum physics books out there. I have been reading and trying to look for a textbook to learn Quantum physics, and this is it. Upon reading reviews of other books on amazon I came across a comment (the reviewer was talking about Richard L. Liboff's book) that summarizes the consensus of all other quantum textbooks in the market:

"Not a great text for a course, but then again.... what quantum text *is* a good book for a quantum course?"

I believe that this textbook (which is relatively new in the market) is a GREAT book for a quantum course. As the title suggest, it truly does have a "fundamental approach" to the world of quantum physics, more so when compared to all other introductory quantum books.

In the end, you should really give Townsend's book a chance! This book might not surpass Liboff's or Grifith's when it comes to being used as a raw "reference" text, but I can say with a high degree of confidence that there is no better book to teach undergraduates what quantum is all about.

I would not be surprised if it becomes the most popular introductory quantum textbook for physics undergraduates!

PS: I also appreciate the price tag that the author has set. It really feels like Townsend wrote the book to teach students and for his passion on the subject, rather than for making money off undergraduates.

Vague, Uninteresting

I believe that a student could probably go from an introductory physics course (which nowadays should touch on the basics of modern physics anyways) straight to Townsend's more advanced Quantum Mechanics book and not lose anything. For that reason, I am not sure why he wrote this text. The exposition strives to be clear, but the details are so obscured that that it was very unsatisfying to endure.

But I did appreciate that it was a "modern" modern physics text---my university used the similar McIntyre book for Quantum Mechanics and I enjoyed it very much.
A major difference was that in the latter bra-ket notation was introduced immediately which was delightfully more simple than the vague verbal approach.
The concreteness of the linear algebraic computations immediately gave the students a sense of learning something new and of computational ability in the subject.
And throughout, the mathematical justification of the physics was much more rewarding.

In all, this the least interesting physic text I have used, and I wish I could have skipped the course that used it.

Marine biologist Earle (Sea Change) makes a compelling argument that the ocean, rather than space, is the next frontier waiting to be explored in this personable photoessay. In the opening chapter, Earle tells how her curiosity about what lives in the sea was first sparked and describes her delight at early underwater excursions using a snorkel and, later, scuba gear. Four subsequent chapters recount seminal events in Earle's career: studying whales in their natural habitats from Hawaii to Glacier Bay, Alaska; spending two weeks working as an "aquanaut" in the Tektite underwater laboratory, 50 feet below the surface of the ocean; sporting a special underwater diving suit called "Jim" (originally designed for salvage operations) to conduct research at 1250 feet; and helping to create Deep Rover, a mini-submarine able to descend to depths of 3000 feet. The book's final chapter, a plea for protecting the earth's oceans from becoming a dumping ground, is eloquent but does not flow naturally from the rest of the book. Earle writes with immediacy and specificity; readers will feel as if they are swimming along beside her as she forays into the ocean's darkest depths. Close-ups of a humpback whale's tail or a jellyfish illustrate points in the text; photographs like the one of Earle walking the sea floor off of the Bahama Islands in her "Jim" diving suit next to an American flag drive home her point that sea and space are equally worth exploring. Grade 4-7-Earle uses a winning combination of factual information and genuine enthusiasm to encourage a new generation of aquanauts. After describing her early interest in the sea and her first scuba dive ("...in my mind I had been transformed irreversibly into a sea creature who henceforth would spend part of the time above water"), the marine biologist shares some of her experiences. She traveled from Hawaii to Alaska to study humpback whales; lived and worked for two weeks in an underwater laboratory; descended 1250 feet in an astronautlike deep-diving suit to do research; and helped design, build, and man a submersible called Deep Rover. Whether she is describing an intimate moment of communication with a giant whale or relating her startling discovery of a "strange creature" at 3000 feet (it turned out to be a soda can), Earle interests, entertains, and informs readers. The final chapter makes a gentle plea for protecting marine habitats. Large, full-color, carefully captioned photographs provide a porthole into the wonders of the sea, showing the variety of life on a coral reef or a jellyfish moving through open water. A respectful, sincere, and inviting look at the final frontier.

Informative Fun

Earle has done a wonderful job of introducing readers to the joy of exploring both the oceans and personal goals. Earle uses a conversational tone with stunning photos in this autobiographical tale. Both children (9-12 is the target age and as a read aloud for younger children) and their parents will find this to be an excellent gateway into the underwater world. Budding marine biologists will marvel as their dreams (like swimming with whales) are described. They will finish the book with their own dreams reinforced.

The engaging story of America gaining its independence

"From Colonies to Country: 1735-1791" is the third volume in Joy Hakim's "A History of US." This book begins with the British kicking the French out of North America and ends with the American colonists winning independence from the British. After a first chapter that establishes the principle of Freedom of the Press that would come to play a key part in not just the American Revolution but throughout the entire history of the United States, the rest of the book falls into four main sections. The first (Chapters 2-6) covers the transition as the English essentially kicked the French out of North America as a result of the French & Indian War. The second (Chapters 7-14) traces the growing dissent in the American colonies with British rule that ended in the Boston Massacre and the Battles of Lexington and Concord. The third (Chapters 15-31) details the Revolutionary War, including the writing and signing of the Declaration of Independence. The final section (Chapters 32-42) covers the means by which the thirteen colonies were turned into a country through the writing and adoption of the Constitution. The back of the book contains an extensive look at great documents including not only the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, but also the Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom. Hakim also talks about how to consider great documents (and stay awake while doing so). The Atlas this time around focuses on the question of how the politics of cartography comes into mapmaking.
There is a lot of information here presented in a way that will speak to young readers raised on computers and hooked on the Internet. There are features on topics of interest scattered throughout the book and the margins are filled with various definitions, mini-biographies, and various facts. I liked the way she included actual signatures from various signers of the Declaration of Independence. These volumes are richly illustrated with historic prints, paintings, etchings, and maps (as well as contemporary maps that are more historically accurate). Besides paying as much attention to the style of presentation as she does to the information being provided, Hakim plays the role of teacher throughout the volume, anticipating student questions and demanding they take the perspectives of the various parties involved in this history. I can see what those home school their children are enamored of this series, because she saves parents from having to doing the engaging. These books do it for them.

Brilliant, though tedious.

Not that there are a lot of alternatives, but this is really the best book on the topic and the update was long overdue. It is tedious to read, but incredibly rich in detail and brilliantly organized. It is very comprehensive. It is a textbook/reference, so one should not expect it to be easy reading. I would rank this close to the top among the hundreds and hundreds of textbooks/references I have read or used in my 20 years. I rarely give 5 stars to a book, but this really is brilliant.

Well-written and thorough, but appendix and problem sets need work

This book is a clear and thorough read. It contains many great case examples, and I didn't find myself confused at any part reading through it. That being said, the appendix is atrocious. You're better off just perusing the chapter that may contain a particular concept than checking the appendix. The problem sets are a bit confusing and unclear. It can be difficult to know what the authors are asking, and the methods to calculate the answers are often not explicit.

This is a very informative text that is applicable to a variety of fields. The authors do an excellent job of bringing together data from a myriad of sources to build a compelling case for fundamental linkages between the biosphere and abiotic processes on the planet.

A book of the 6 string bass Modes and Scales, It's a handy guide which comes in useful for quick reference.

I have no cons, I do have a pro though, the layout works flawlessly on my Kindle Fire and Amazon online reader. I've had other scale and mode books which are just hideous to work from, this is a charm.

Sure you can get all of the info online for free, but for $3.49, I don't mind having a portable mode and scale book at my fingertips.
