From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up. "On the seventh day God made baseball." For Neil "Bull" Larsen and his best friend, Jeff Hanson, baseball has been their life for as long as they can remember, hence their pet saying. For his senior project, Bull decides to chronicle his high school baseball career by filling in the details of the diary he has been keeping. The teen, by choice, lives with his widowed grandfather while his business-executive single mom imparts advice from her home in California. While baseball is the major focus of this story, Bull also faces the challenges common to adolescents including dealings with family, friends, the opposite sex, and school. He comes to grips with the death of a friend who became a rival due to their interest in the same girl, and with the fact that despite his talent, a life-long dream of professional baseball might be in reach for Jeff but not for him. Carter pens a sure hit for baseball fans as plenty of riveting game action is detailed. Though a few fairly mild curse words are present, all-in-all this is a gentle coming-of-age story that, while not a gripping page-turner, results in an enjoyable read.?Tom S. Hurlburt, La Crosse Public Library, WI

From Booklist
Gr. 7^-10. Unlike many sports novels, Bull Catcher does more than pump up its readers for a do-or-die game against the crosstown rivals. Carter takes a deeper look at sports, competition, and what it takes to succeed. Neil "Bull" Larsen and his best friend, Jeff Hanson, see everything through the prism of baseball. They play the game almost year-round, constantly pushing themselves to play at a higher level. In high school, Jeff single-mindedly pursues the college scholarship he hopes will lead to a pro career, while Bull begins to realize the game doesn't give him everything he wants and starts to explore life off the field. In the end, although Jeff wins a scholarship and Bull doesn't, it is clear which boy has the brighter future. Jeff's characterization is a little flat and the author's hand is a bit heavy when it comes to describing Jeff's passion for baseball. But in Bull, Carter has created a likable (though far from perfect) young man whose experiences on and off the field have readied him for the real world. Randy Meyer

From Kirkus Reviews
The rise of Neil ``Bull'' Larsen, from fledgling freshman ballplayer to starting catcher on his senior championship team, is captured against a background of adolescent love, sweaty afternoons on the baseball diamond, and nights of summer-camp fun: in other words, a soap opera for pre-teen boys and a fantasy for budding baseball players. Bull is a burly guy who can't clear the bases as fast as he'd like, but his smarts, wry sense of humor, and commendable devotion quickly dispel the dumb-jock stereotype. As Bull recounts for a senior project, baseball is all that he and his best friend, Jeff Hanson, ever think about. Carter (Between a Rock and a Hard Place, 1995, etc.) packs his narrative with action on the field and also shows the young athletes off-season: lifting weights, running sprints, and dreaming about spring training. Off the field, Bull and Jeff bridge cultural differences when they transform a Vietnamese transfer student into a star pitcher; moon over pretty, unattainable girls; and help their teammate Billy escape from an abusive father. At the end of senior year, Bull is unchanged by Billy's accidental death, his break-up with a girlfriend, and the realization that he will never play pro ball. In fact, the story ends without any sign that he's going to take even tentative steps toward maturity. Good as far as it goes, but incomplete. Bull Catcher is a great book for teenage baseball fans.
By A Customer
Neil "Bull" Larson is a very big kid who loves to play baseball (he is a catcher). His mom is a businesswoman who lives in L.A. Bull's grandma died when he was still a little kid so now he lives with just his grandpa. He goes to High School in Shipley, Wisconsin, and plays baseball for the school's team. In the beginning, Neil is playing for the jayvee team as a Junior. A Vietnamese kid named Phuong moves to their school and Bull and his best friend, Jeff (shortstop), try to convince him to pitch for their team, but it was a lot harder than they had expected. They saw him to be a great pitcher because of his long arms. They were right that he could throw hard, and he was also very accurate. For the first ten minutes anyway. He just started throwing wild and everything. After a while, Phuong decided that this was not for him, so he decided that he did not want to play baseball. After a couple of days, Jeff began to get really mad at him. Bull talked to Phuong and found out why this always happens to him. He said he just concentrates to hard. So, Bull worked on Phuong's control with pitching. By the time that the season started, he decided to play baseball. Neil and him were so good that the next year they played varsity as Sophomores. Bull felt bad that he made to varsity before Jeff did. That year they finished third. The next year, Jeff was on varsity with everyone else, and he was named captain. They were tied for first place going into a tiebreaking final game of the year. They lost that and is was very tough for Bull to get over it. That summer, he became a counselor at a summer camp and had a great time.

Bull catcher
By Mr.Francesco Raphael Galardo of the Catskills
Bull Catcher was a good book. It had a lot of forshadowing in it maybe a little too much because it was always giving you clues and little hints about things that were going to happen latter on in the book and when you put it down you already figured out what was going to happen so you didn't want to start reading it again. The book had a lot of sttings in it and that made the book good because sence it had a lot of settings in it so it was always discribing somthing.
The book was about two kids that there life long dream is to play baseball for the major legues. They play baseball all the time even during the winter that is how much they love baseball. One kid is a realy good catcher and his name is bull. The other one is a pretty good pitcher and a realy good short stop and he nows his stuff, his name is Jeff.
The two kids meet this exchange student from Korea that is a realy good pitcher he just doesn't know it yet and his name is Phuong. They all try out for the school varcity baseball team after they work on Phoung's pitch. Jeff played like he usaely does and its good but its not what the coach wants so he gets benched. Phuong and Bull doe good so there second behind the starters.
Bull gets in trouble he can't play for a little while and a whole big goes on becuase his team is playing there rivalsand he dosen't get to play and he turned sixteen so his grand pa wants him to drive there but he doesn't want to watch the team.
I would tell you more but it would ruin the story for anyone who wants to read the story's. I recommend it to every one because it's a great book and it has a little bit of every thing in it.

Bull Catcher
By Josh
If you like baseball and surprises, you don't won't to miss Alden R.Carter's version of Bull Catcher. The book starts out with Neil Larsen alsoknown as Bull when he is in the ninth grade.
Bull and four of his friends are about to try out for baseball at their school. Out of the four of them that tried out, three of them made it to varsity. The one kid that didn't make it to varsity was really mad, but he decided that it was better than nothing. The varsity's first couple of games they played wasn't that good but then a new guy came to their school and tried out as pitcher. Bull was in charge of making the new pitcher the best in the league. After Bull worked with Phoung he did become the pitcher in the league. I know that because the coach said to Bull "Good job, now we have the best pitcher". During one of Bull's summers during his high school career, he went to a camp to be a counselor. While he was at camp he meet a girl that he liked so much that when he was around her, he couldn't talk right. He started to be able to talk to her when camp ended. The next summer he was going to go there again, but his mom made him go to L.A. with her. While Bull was in L.A. one of his friend got killed by drinking and driving.
Other than that, I think that Bull Catcher is a interesting book.

A "cookbook" is better organized.
By C.V. Sharkey
I have to agree with "Don't waste your money." I'm just getting into this and I NEED basics. Like, how to connect categories to your menu, which I simply can not find in this book. Nor does the index in the back of the book cover simple basic topics. And maybe what I'm looking for really is in the book. I should NOT have to read every piece of the book in order to find what I need because it lacks this simple form of organization.
How simple is it? OK--I want to add a product, first I want to add the categories. Fine. Then the products, fine. But why isn't the MENU listing my categories? When you click on one of the products it shows the path--but nowhere else. It's NOT IN THE BOOK. So don't tell me about all of the advanced widgets that I may want to enable down the road--be a basic cookbook. Don't waste my time.

Air America, by Christopher Robbins

The incredible inside story of the world's most extraordinary covert operation. Air America - a secret airline run by the CIA - flew missions no one else would touch, from General Claire Cennault's legendary Flying Tigers in WW II to two brutal decades cruising over the bomb-savaged jungles of Southeast Asia. Their pilots dared all and did all - a high-rolling, fast-playing bunch of has-beens and hellraisers whose motto was 'Anything, Anywhere, Anytime'. Whether it was delivering food and weapons or spooks and opium, Air America was the one airline where you didn't need reservations - just a hell of a lot of courage and a willingness to fly to the bitter end.

The book blows the movie away!
By Kristen Ostrom
Don't let the fact that Mel Gibson and Robert Downey, Jr. are on the cover of this book (to promote their movie "Air America") fool you!

Once you read the book, you will quickly find that the movie and the book really only share a title. In fact, if I were Christopher Robbins, I would have taken the money that Hollywood paid me for the film rights, refinanced the "100-acre wood," and gone off to live with Tigger and Pooh! (Ok, I know. They are not the same people.) I would then divorce my name from any association with the B-grade film that utterly and completely failed to tell the story of these brave Americans who helped support the U.S. war efforts in Southeast Asia.

Aside from the arguably inaccurate chapter dealing with Air America's trafficking of opium, Robbins' research was well received by both former Air America personnel, and eventually, the CIA. I would recommend this book to any aviation/history enthusiast who enjoys reading about the exploits of paramilitary aviation operations.

The book is definitely worth reading . . . just put a bunch of masking tape on the cover. That way you won't be embarrassed if someone on the subway sees you reading it!

Grab this book if interested in the war in Southeast Asia
By S. G Spires
This book sparked a small controversy when it was released in 1979 because it was one of the first to take a serious look at America's "secret" war in Laos and Cambodia.
Robbins did a fine job by interviewing pilots and showing what it was like to fly, fight and survive what many thought was a backwater to the Vietnam war. I thought he was very fair to the men who fought there.
Catch his other book, if you like this one, "The Ravens." Released almost a decade later, in 1987, "The Ravens" tells the story of secret Forward Air Controllers, or FACs, who controlled air strikes during the Vietnam War. Robbins got even better stories for "The Ravens." Both books are kind of hard to find though. You have to buy them used.

Never Surrender: A Soldier's Journey to the Crossroads of Faith and Freedom, by Jerry Boykin

General Jerry Boykin is one of the original members of the Delta Force and has spent the majority of his career in Special Forces. His work in this area of the military placed him in many battles--some of them legendary. He was commander of the Delta Force team portrayed in the movie Black Hawk Down.

These and other dramatic experiences make Boykin's life story read like the riveting fiction of Tom Clancy. He shares how his foundation of faith--while challenged and even broken--was restored and became the lifeblood that brought him through unimaginable circumstances to a rich and inspiring life.

In the end, the general realizes his life would have gone very differently, even tragically, without his faith.

Review
"A powerful and moving chronicle of courage, commitment, and devotion by an audacious soldier and gifted leader. This thrilling account of how he "fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith" in the midst of dangerous and difficult circumstances is inspiring. You won't want to put it down."―Oliver North, Lt. Col. USMC (Ret.), New York Times bestselling author of Mission Compromised, Jericho Sanction, The Assassin, and the FOX News War Stories series

"NEVER SURRENDER takes the reader through the experiences of one of America's greatest living soldiers, touching firmly on recent history and much of the drama surrounding it. More importantly, the book shows how one of the strongest of the strong isn't so strong he can't still call on his faith and on God to guide him in difficult times."―Bill Cowan, retired marine and Fox News Channel contributor

"[NEVER SURRENDER] is a saga of battles won and lost, of political intrigue and battlefield valor, of personal tragedy and the God who fashions greatness in the crucible of hardship. This is Jerry Boykin's story, a tale that offers us sterling character to make our own."―Stephen Mansfield, New York Times bestselling author of The Faith of the American Soldier

""America's Point Man" for over three decades, Jerry Boykin is a national treasure . . . His story is an intriguing read for thinking Americans. He's not only borne the weight of battle, he's carried our nation in his heart. NEVER SURRENDER is a life story that demands both our gratitude and respect. Now that I think about it, my friend is the consummate tender warrior."―Stu Weber, pastor and author

Excellent! Highly recommend the book.
By Jimmie A. Kepler
Few people have been involved in as many significant US military operations over the past three decades as has LTG (ret.) William G. "Jerry" Boykin. From being a founding member of the Delta Force to commanding all US Army Special Forces he shows that a person can be a committed Christian and a soldier.

Co-written by New York Times best selling author Lynn Vincent, Never Surrender: A Soldier's Journey to the Crossroads of Faith and Freedom gets your interest on page one and keeps it through the entire book. The book's structure helps with the presentation. It is divided in thirteen sections. Each section covers one of the stages of Jerry Boykin's life or a major US operation he was involved in. Each section is divided into short, action-packed chapters.

The book tells story after story of how famous military operations went down. The Iran Hostage Crisis, Sudan, Grenada, Panama, Waco and the Branch Davidians, Columbia, Somalia, the Balkans and more give great insight into contemporary US military history.

Jerry Boykin is a born-again Christian. The role of his faith is very tastefully woven into each story. You will not feel preached at, but rather have an appreciation of how his belief in God sustained and directed him through the years.

One of my favorite stories in the book involved Panama, the playing of loud, rock music and Manuel Noriega. The media thought the US Army was using the loud music as a psychological weapon against Noriega. The original intent of the music was to keep the media from being able to eavesdrop on the conversations between Boykin and the Vatican embassy where Noriega was hold-up.

The most insightful section was on Mogadishu, Somalia. It gives the real story that the movie Blackhawk Down omits. Boykin was the leader of the mission. He had to make the tough decision of leaving a man down in order to save others. He said that was the worst thing he has ever experienced.

Boykin has never been afraid to admit he is a Christian. Some things he said during the most recent war in Iraq upset people. He said that he believed God put George Bush in the White House. The news media quoted that statement. What the media didn't quote was that he continued by saying God put Bill Clinton and every other American leader in their positions. Boykin was pretty much beat up in the press over this. He was completely exonerated by internal military investigations.

I highly recommend the book. It provides fascinating insight into military tactics and life behind the scenes of Delta Force. Read and reviewed by Jimmie A. Kepler, July 2008.

Helpful, Illuminating, and Inspiring
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
I ordered this biography on a whim, as one of a dozen books on irregular warfare that I am using to review the thoughts of others before I publish my own book. When the three boxes from Amazon arrived, this book was buried under others, but was immediately the most attractive for the week-end.

Several important insights are available from this book:

1) Charlie Beckwith, whose book Delta Force: The Army's Elite Counterterrorist Unit I really enjoyed, especially the part where he refused to leave a British field hospital for an American one, learned from the SAS the most important lesson it had to teach, and brought it to DELTA: to be *truly* unconventional, to be *truly* irregular, you must be UNMILITARY. From this page (69) I simply relaxed and enjoyed a great account. I got what I was looking for, sooner than expected.

2) The 12-hour long march from point to point is a time-tested method of screening for individuals who have inherent resolve that cannot be trained for. I quote from page 78: "The Army can train a man to spy, shoot, blow things up, and kill with his bare hands. But it cannot instill in a man the series of two-sided personality coins that cash out as a successful operative: patience and aggression, precision and audacity, the ability to lead or fall in line. Above all, the Army cannot instill resolve beyond physical and mental limits."

3) In the above context, faith is helpful, and faith cannot be taken for granted. Early on I enjoyed the author's explanation of how he reconciled faith with a profession that wages death (for life), finding that every war is a spiritual battle. The author explicitly identifies America as God's land of faith and tolerance, and I agree with him.

4) On page 130, he concludes that some men are evil and simply need to be killed. I agree with that completely. In the 1990's when I first started advocating the need to shift away from the Soviet Union and toward Third World terrorists and criminals, I used the phrase, "one man, one bullet." We still cannot do that today, while the Navy and the Air Force continue to buy fewer really big things for more and more money.

I enjoyed every minute with this book. This is not a "shoot 'em book." This is, as the subtitle communicates, the story of an extraordinary individual, a man born and trained to be the best possible fighter, who found faith and kept faith with God and America. He is "the way it ought to be."

Here are some side notes.

Rumsfeld created the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence because he was furious that his Special Forces had to be "led" into Afghanistan by the CIA (see my review of Jawbreaker: The Attack on bin Laden and al-Qaeda: A Personal Account by the CIA's Key Field Commander.

George Bush Junior betrayed all of us in crucifying and disavowing General Boykin in the face of media lies and exaggerations for which the author was fully exonerated by two Inspector General endeavors.

Media--the out of control largely ignorant media--is the best weapon that terrorists and others who hate America can use. I agree with that, and I am especially concerned at the ignorance of both our current presidential candidates, neither one of whom can talk substance in the context of a balanced budget--and they get away with it because the media has no idea what the substance of governance is (see the free online book, also on Amazon, Election 2008: Lipstick on the Pig (Substance of Governance; Legitimate Grievances; Candidates on the Issues; Balanced Budget 101; Call to Arms: Fund We Not Them; Annotated Bibliography).

9/11 struck the author as the opening salvo in a long battle for our own soul. I agree with the soul part, but the battle started when we decided to run the world for 50 years, very badly, while ignoring the spread of violent Islam funded by Saudi Arabia. See these four books:
Sleeping with the Devil: How Washington Sold Our Soul for Saudi Crude
The Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 (Vintage)
The Fifty-Year Wound: How America's Cold War Victory Has Shaped Our World
Wilson's Ghost: Reducing the Risk of Conflict, Killing, and Catastrophe in the 21st Century

Other tid-bits:
+ 1 of three officers to make cut in creating DELTA. Peter Schoomaker was another.
+ DELTA pool was 118 of whom 25 finished the Long Walk, of whom 19 were selected (in the first class)
+ Boykin's dad was one of five brothers who served in "The Good War," three in the Army, two in the Navy.
+ He was 6 feet tall and weighed 180 lbs in the eighth grade.
+ Played guitar and wound up playing at World's Fair in 1965 (the thought, "well-rounded" came into my head--not a thug stereotype)
+ Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets
+ Drawn to brotherhood of infantry, inspired by Viet-Nam stories.
+ One of his coaches taught him that faith and reality could go together
+ Once married, his first child drove him to the Dean's List
+ "I really wanted to learn everything the Army had to teach."
+ Found faith for real in the Army, it filled a void.
+ He LIKED Ham and Lima Beans in C-Rats. That alone makes him strange in an amusing sort of way. I always thought of that C-Ration as one step down from bread and water.
+ He had his failures, in both school and the Army, but they drove him to excel and honors came his way when he bore down.
+ Aide de Camp tour in Korea got him to Viet-Nam for three months, and gave him a strategic understanding of the Army
+ Lost the general's dog, ended up running him down. Very funny.
+ Was one of the originals as paratroopers migrated into air assault.
+ Almost shut out of DELTA by the shrink for "excessive faith in God," but he connected with Beckwith in the final interview and got in, the clear message being that the faith was not misplaced.
+ Excellent discussion of the time value of instinctive shooting (with the necessary training) over aimed fire--life of a hostage, the first takes one second, the second takes two seconds, time for the hostage to be killed.
+ Beckwith understood the killing nature of bureaucracy
+ I have a note, this book is the anti-thesis to Colin's Powell's biography, My American Journey and a shorter different book-end to Hackworth's About Face: Odyssey of an American Warrior

The author takes us through a number of operations in a manner that does not compromise any tradecraft and is not tedious. I appreciated very much the light once over on Tehran (the students thought they would have to get out in three days, they under-estimated the timidity of the US under President Carter), Sudan, Graneda which was not a surprise and for which CIA had no intelligence of substance for the fighters, Panama, Somalia, and then Bosnia.

Sixteen pages of photos are in the middle of the book, all appropriate and helpful. There is no index.

I thought to end this review with several of the phrases from the Bible that the author quoted in the book. I bought Leadership Lessons of Jesus: A Timeless Model for Today's Leaders because it was on sale in the uniform store at MacDill, and now that I have read this book, believe that our Irregulars of the future will be well-served by being required to understand faith, and to memorize portions of the Bible, the Koran, and other Holy Scriptures (just think of the impact as shown in Lawrence of Arabia, when his completing a reading instantly won over King Faisal and sidelined the conventional colonel).

"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 9.4-5

"He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint." Isaiah 40

"For they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up on wings of eagles, they shall run and not be weary and they shall walk and not faint." Isaiah 40.31, faxed from around the world as he struggled to survive a 50 caliber bullet shattering a radio into his body.

Amazon won't let me have more than ten links, but this one, by Navy Capt Doug Johnston, is worth a close look: Faith-Based Diplomacy. There is an intersection of UNMILITARY, faith, and Irregular War: Waging Peace that no one in power seems to understand.

Few others could have told this story
By Dalton Fury
I'm a bit biased as I served in the same unit as the author although at a later date, but this is a proud and extraordinary account of one man's career in Delta Force and his strong personal faith. LTG(R) Boykin seemed to be a magnet to our nation's most sensitive "black" ops, tempted death on two different battlefields, and shares details of missions many of us in my era knew very little about. Boykin also shares his obvious respect and admiration for GEN(R) Peter J. Schoomaker, the 35th Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, who for many years was just as "black" as Boykin. Even if you have read Beckwith's DELTA FORCE and Haney's INSIDE DELTA FORCE, don't miss Boykin's eye opening and awe-inspiring work. Well worth ten times the cover price.
