An interesting read but dated theories

This work, despite, being over one hundred years old, is still very readable. Though the work provides some interesting information on the origin of British folklore, much of its racial and ethnic thought is way outdated and borderline prejudiced. Also Gomme s dependence on what he calls survivalist, the idea that ancient beliefs have lingered on into the present day and become folklore is simply to much. However, as I said, despite its flaws this work is still immensely entertaining and also it is Avery interesting glimpse into some of the intellectual modes of thought that were current in academia cocaine hundred years ago.

Recommended for folklore scholars

I honestly love this. Some of the theory shows its age, and some of it goes without saying, but a lot of it shows interesting ways to look at things, and I was unutterably delighted to read all of the citations of Andrew Lang as a friend of the author, as I grew up reading the Colored Fairy Books. I spent my time reading this highlighting many sections and happily taking notes. It was wonderful.

Concise and complete with some errors (see note below)

I used this book to supplement my M1 course in biostats. It has all the topics and they are presented completely and clearly for the most part, though I'd like to see more specific short examples. My main complaint is that there are some errors as follows:
page 71 I think the formula for specificity is wrong
page 94 there is an example where the Population Attributable Risk is calculated to be 0.068 and the next sentence refers to 7.2%, which may have been the value in a previous edition. Confusing.
These are just the errors I noticed that didn't agree with my course or with the First Aid stats section. Made me nervous that there might be other errata that I didn't notice because I'm not as familiar with the topic. All in all seems like a good source for Step 1, but I can't yet confirm this.

Update 1/30/14:

I emailed the author about the above mentioned errors and he promptly replied.

My email to him:
On page 71 of the 4th edition of "High-Yield Biostatistics..." Specificity is given in an equation with "number testing positive who do not have the disease (TN)" in the numerator of the given equation. Based on what is written on page 70 and what I've seen in other sources, shouldn't the numerator of the specificity equation be "number testing NEGATIVE who do not have the disease (TN)?" Is this a misprint in the new edition?

His reply included the following:
"There is one other error too: In Chapter 8, page 90 the numerator in the equation for Prevalence rate reads "number of new cases of the disease". The word "new" should not be there. In the text the definition is correct, but in the equation it is not."

I give the product 4 stars because of the above mentioned errors and 5 because of the quick response from the author. Hopefully the next edition can be fully corrected and will be a 5 star product.

Much improved; brief but good

As an instructor of modules in epidemiology and biostatistics for freshman medical students, I find the fourth edition of Glaser's biostatistics and epidemiology book to be a noteworthy revision of earlier editions. Explanations of likelihood ratios, survival analysis, Cox hazard analysis and information on meta-analyses, effectiveness research and decision analysis address omissions in earlier publications. Unfortunately, in an unnecessary attempt to come in at 100 pages or less mention of hypothesis testing of multiple groups (ANOVA) and non-parametric testing (Wilcoxon sign rank, etc.) get short shrift. And more egregiously, all end-of-chapter questions (and answers) have been eliminated.

I will be telling my students to purchase the new edition but borrow an old edition for the problem-solving sections.

As to delivery of the book; UPS left it on the front porch in a rain storm. After 2 days of drying, the book is usable but wrinkled.

The sixth edition has six new chapters on important topics related to improving missile guidance system performance and understanding key design concepts and tradeoffs. In addition, at the request of many readers, all of the FORTRAN source code that originally appeared in the first five editions of the text has been converted to MATLAB. However, as before, interested readers can obtain all of the texts MATLAB and equivalent FORTRAN versions of the MATLAB source code in electronic form from the AIAA website mentioned at the back of this text. The first new Chapter presents two new applications of the method of adjoints for mixed continuous-discrete systems. The first application involves multiple samplers with each of the samplers operating at a different sampling rate. The second application involves taking the adjoint of a three-state discrete Kalman filter in the homing loop. The second new Chapter introduces a new guidance law that can be used to shape the interceptor trajectory against a stationary target. The unique advantage of this new guidance approach over existing guidance laws is that time to go information is not required. The second part of the new Chapter considers both the problem of finding the minimum achievable miss distance of a radar homing missile and exploring practical techniques that can be used to achieve the minimum possible miss. The third new Chapter introduces the differential game guidance law with bounded controls and demonstrates its performance improvements over conventional guidance laws under challenging conditions in which the missile to target acceleration advantage is very low. The fourth new Chapter introduces techniques for graphically presenting strategic information on successful intercepts of an impulsive ballistic target being pursued by an impulsive interceptor. The three graphical techniques discussed are the operational area method, the launch area denied method and the defended area method. Examples are presented illustrating the utility of each of three methods of presentation. The fifth new Chapter examines two filtering options for the boost phase intercept of a strategic target. The two filters compared are a template-based Kalman filter that has perfect a priori information and a linear three-state polynomial Kalman filter that does not require such information. The filters are compared under both ideal and realistic conditions. The results of this Chapter may surprise some readers. Finally, the sixth new Chapter addresses some of the guidance and control issues involved in enabling an air-launched interceptor carrying a highly maneuverable kinetic kill vehicle to perform an exoatmospheric intercept of a boosting threat target that is capable of traveling many thousands of kilometers. This new Chapter takes the reader through the first iteration of the multi-iteration design process in order to show how much divert and acceleration may be required by the kinetic kill vehicle so that it can hit the target. Simplified examples are presented to indicate how conventional guidance and filtering techniques can be used as a starting point in the iterative design process for this important problem in missile defense.

Too Basic

Based on all the glowing reviews, I picked up a copy, only to find that most of the content is very basic engine math. There were only a couple formulae that I didn't already have, so that means:

1) I'm a really smart guy with engine math (not likely :)), or

2) This is a really basic book

Too, there's quite a bit of space dedicated to carburetor math, which, by nearly any measure, is outdated. I was surprised to see it, considering the book was published in 2011. And typically, all the illustrations and most of the text assumes the reader is working with 2 valve heads, cam in block, domestic American engines. No mention of 4 valve, OHC engines, or helpful formulas to size injectors, etc.

One of the main reasons I bought the book is that I noticed it had a section on using spreadsheets for engine math. I mistakenly assumed there might have been a USB stick with the spreadsheet included, or at least some Excel formulas that could have been copied & pasted. No such luck, instead there was a very basic tutorial on how to enter a formula into Excel. Really? Who in this day & age hasn't used Excel for at least some basic purpose? And there's also a section on how to use a pocket calculator? C'mon.......?

The author definitely knows his subject matter, but after reading it, I had the feeling I'd just been transported back in time 20-25 years, and I was left wondering "Is that all there is?" Disappointed, and my copy of the book may be up for sale soon in the used section of Amazon.

Suggestions for future revisions:

1. Lose the carburetor math & replace it with EFI math
2. Give equal treatment to 4 valve heads as 2 valve heads
3. Give consideration that a lot of hotrodders in the 21st century have more than one cam in their engines
4. Include actual Excel formulas that can be cut & pasted into spreadsheets & get rid of the hand calculator section
5. If possible, include a USB stick with an already constructed Excel spreadsheet

Engine Math

Exceeded my expectations! I now understand why each component compliments or hinders engine performance. Any one interested in building and engine, this is a must read! When to use single or dual plane intake manifold, vacuum or mechanical secondaries on carb, header diameter and length, long throw high displacement vs short throw higher reving motor, head types and volume with relation to street motor or all out race motor, etc... This book will allow you to select the correct parts before you build an engine. This could save you $thousands of dollars. Engine Math should be a required class for trade schools, high schools and college.
The toughest part is now listening to what other guys are building and knowing their mistakes before they get the engine finished. I'm telling all gear heads to get this book! Otherwise, you must enjoy the look of my tail lights as I leave you in the dust!

This is the 2nd copy of this book I've owned. The 1st one literally was " consumed in use". Any "car guy" who doesn't have this book is missing out. I use it daily!

I had this great idea, it is going to solve problem A

I borrowed this book from our local library.
The book is fabulous! It presents a large view of the needs and adaptations in the places people have lived. It is a book that asks us to think-great, I had this great idea, it is going to solve problem A, but will my solution introduce problem B. This is the type of thinking we need for our children now, when we need to realize that we are humans are plenty enough to have profound effects on mother nature.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book!

This excellent book is a must have in the last few months before Radiology specialist exams!!
The hundreds of pictures include excellent examples of almost any case you could be shown in oral exams in gastroenterological imaging, and and big enough to be of useful viewing quality.
The text is succinct but factual and keeps you engaged enough to read the entire book in a few days.

If your exams are looming, it would take only a few weeks to become intimately knowledgable on the contents of this book, and assure yourself of confidence in the exam room. I'm so glad I spent the money!!!!

Only text you need for boards

This is a great review book. It seems lengthy at around 700 pages, but is actually a very pleasant and quick read. This is all that you need for boards, meaning if you know this book for GI you will easily be fine. There is nothing negative that really can be said about this book, from the images to the discussions to the high quality medical illustrations. Excellent review text.
