Preactically Cheating Statistics Handbook

I find the Practically Cheating Statistics Handbook to be very well written and organized so that the readers can fully understand the true meaning of the book.
This book begins with the basics; which I feel is the most important factor in this type of book; especially for someone with very little knowledge on this subject.
Reading this bookgives me more confidence that I can go ahead with my career expeciations; because now I can overcome all of the math and statistic issues I had before reading this book.
This book is written in a very simple fashion so that it can be easily understood.
The examples given in this book are very helpful in helping the readers fully understand starting with the basics.
This book is far the best I have read; because it does the main thing first by starting with the basics and that's why I enjoyed reading this book.

An Easy-to-Read Guide to Statistics

Practically Cheating Statistics Handbook is an easy-to-read book that explains in simple terms the complicated information you need to understand in order to be successful at statistics. This book takes the subject of statistics, and makes it interesting, putting it at a level that is easy to grasp. The book begins by reviewing some basic math concepts which are prerequisites to doing statistics, then goes on to give an overview of what statistics is, and how to identify true and unbiased statistical results from false or selective statistics. The main body of the book explains how to perform different statistical procedures, such as the central limit theorem, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing, and is filled with illustrations and step-by-step instructions for how to carry out different statistical procedures, which you can refer back to at any time as a reference. If you have ever struggled to understand statistics, this book might be just what you need!

Look out

This information is all good and fine, but it's really not any better than what you can find on Google. In fact, you can find more on Google. This product didn't help me and then the company didn't want to give the refund they had promised. I included the invoice number in the original email and yet they couldn't find my order. They followed with other emails asking how I'd paid, when I'd paid, etc...Finally, I contacted them again and they informed me it had been more than 30 days since I'd purchased the product. I reminded them that I'd started the process before the 30 day window had expired. I finally had to get a refund via paypal. Luckily I did get my money back but not without a ton of legwork on my part.

Computation Structures focuses on computer architecture as a complicated problem in digital design. As such, the initial sections discuss the basic principles of designing digital circuits and systems. The context is subsequently used to discuss more and more advanced ideas without a lot of confusing structure. For example, pipelining is initially discussed in terms of speeding up simple arithmetic circuits, which allows the reader to focus on the conceptual issues of pipelining rather than the embedded problem. Using this aggregative approach, the authors build their way up through a series of simple machines to begin talking about processes and process semantics. In addition, Computation Structures contains a nice section on microcode, which is seldom discussed in most books. The text is clear and the exercises well chosen.

Timeless concepts

This book is quite idiosyncratic in its kind. The content is quite theoretic, so that probably it won't be the best choice for more pragmatic and practice-oriented courses, for which the two books from Patterson-Hennessy, e.g., will be more suited. However, the value of this book lays in the shocking amount of knowledge it carries. This is the classic gap-filling book: my opinion is that many CS student of us that will read this book page by page, will discover that they really didn't know something they thought they knew instead. This is simply because the discussion is organic and continuos from the start to the end, and the writing is never too hard, so that any gap will easily show itself during the reading.
Have a look at the table of contents. It starts from digital logic basics and it ends at the Interrupts chapter (this means, almost, operating systems). The distance seems to be prohibitive, but the path traced by prof. Ward and Halstead is remarkably solid and meaningful. Once basic logic circuits blocks are covered, it leads to computation issues (from FSM to Turing Machines), passing from performance considerations (e.g. pipelining) and memory hierarchies (cache memory is extensively covered).
Two chapters are devoted to milestone architectures: the S machine and the G machine. Such a thorough coverage on these two machines is something I've not found in other books.
The chapters on Processes, Processor Multiplexing, Processes Synchronization and Interrupts are good and at the level of an OS course. The astonishing thing is that the background to face these issues is well built before (again, recall that the book starts from basic Logic Levels !).
This book has been a very worthy read. My course used materials from different books, internet resources and my instructor's knowledge. The instructor itself suggested us to give the book a complete read when we had time (we didn't cover all the topics of the book) because we would have really learned important things. I've not done it completely, but the more I do it, the more I agree.

Outstanding introduction

Ward and Halstead have put together the best introduction to computing hardware I've seen. Only Wirth's Digital Circuit Design for Computer Science Students equals it, but with a slightly different thrust and a good deal less detail in its coverage. The authors wrote this book as a text for a grueling one-semester course, but I can imagine it working well as a two-term book for students who need more time to absorb material.

It twenty-one chapters (plus appendices) start at the transistor level, then "whole-heartedly accept the digital abstraction." Fast-paced discussions apply that abstraction to the workhorses of digital design: binary numbers, logic realization, state machines, and synchronous design discipline. By the book's midpoint, it already addresses microcode control of the datapaths that students have already examined, and move on to implementation of two different insturction sets on microcoded platform that the students designed (with guidance) and built. Given this gritty level of understanding, the last chapters address system issues, including the software process abstraction, operating system concerns, and a little about interfacing to electronics outside of the processor itself.

Omissions matter as much as inclusions in the book's syllabus. The text breezes over logic minimization, logic hazards, state machine design, giving just enough of each tool for a student to get a job done. Asynchronous design appears only briefly, to explain the goings-in inside of latches and registers. Large-scale issues of clock jitter and skew appear briefly if at all. Students who eventually need to know the fussy bits can learn them elsewhere, but those bodies of knowledge really don't support the goal of computing system design. By analogy, a mechanical engineer could study the details of a screw's thread pitch, depth, and geometry or of steel's metallurgy, but neither will really help in building a bridge. Those low-level details matter, but interfere with higher-level integration.

One aspect of this book deserves equal praise and complaint. The 1990 copyright date means that it's quickly moving into the past. It treats TTL and even RTL as going concerns, and omits FPGAs completely. To be really useful, this book's obsolete technologies need an update. At the same time, this older perspective keeps microcoding alive and well, the only book I know that puts it in the students's hands and put it to work. Microprogramming is an idea whose time has come (again) in control for large-scale logic design, as a useful step between the mouse-milking fussiness of state-machine control and the heavyweight sluggishness of standard instruction set processors. More importantly, this puts the processor's instruction set and basic operation back under the student's control, where it needs to be for today's configurable computing.

Don't let the age put you off. No other title surpasses this as an introductory text for designers of computing hardware. It bridges the much-ignored gap between logic design and computer architecture. It neither bogs down in carry chains and Booth multipliers, nor leaps ahead to virtual memory and interprocessor communication. I recommend it to any student who wants a practical approach to this important layer in computing's conceptual stack.

A classic, and a wicked fun read

Since this little volume first appeared in 1963, there probably hasn't been a single book written on the topic of the short story that doesn't make some mention of it.

O'Connor was a noted short story writer in his own right as well as an essayist and literary critic. His central premise in this book, that short stories tend to arise out of "submerged populations" (i.e., minority groups, immigrants, etc.) may not have gained wide acceptance in academic circles, but that doesn't diminish the interest or the charm of this book in the least. It's a thoroughly fascinating examination of the short story as an art form, and a rollicking fun read to boot.

Much of the "fun" part comes from O'Connor's unabashed and delightfully expressed opinions. Here he is on one of Ernest Hemingway's short story classics:
"In 'The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber' Francis runs away from a lion, which is what most sensible men would do if faced by a lion, and his wife promptly cuckolds him with the English manager of their big-game hunting expedition. As we all know, good wives admire nothing in a husband except his capacity to deal with lions, so we can sympathize with the poor woman in her trouble. [...] To say that the psychology of this story is childish would be to waste good words. [...] Clearly, it is the working out of a personal problem that for the vast majority of men and women has no validity whatever."

This may not represent the consensus opinion on Hemingway's story, but what fun it is to see someone stand up to the old pugilist and tweak his nose!

This is not to say that all of O'Connor's comments are snarky; he freely calls other Hemingway stories works of genius. And he bubbles over with enthusiasm when discussing many, many other authors as well. For example, regarding two Chekhov stories, "The Dependents" and "Misery," he says:
"Never in the history of literature has human loneliness been described with such passion as in these two stories."

Speaking of passion, it's clear that O'Connor has a tremendous and joyful love for the short story. Read this book for the pleasure of hearing a true artist practicing his art as he speaks about his chosen art form.

This is a classic study of the short story. It is literary theory at its best, intelligent, insightful and yet readable. This is not a book on how to write short stories rather it is a exploration and study of the genre.

Aggregation of individual opinions into a social decision is a problem widely observed in everyday life. For centuries people tried to invent the `best' aggregation rule. In 1951 young American scientist and future Nobel Prize winner Kenneth Arrow formulated the problem in an axiomatic way, i.e., he specified a set of axioms which every reasonable aggregation rule has to satisfy, and obtained that these axioms are inconsistent. This result, often called Arrow's Paradox or General Impossibility Theorem, had become a cornerstone of social choice theory. The main condition used by Arrow was his famous Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives. This very condition pre-defines the `local' treatment of the alternatives (or pairs of alternatives, or sets of alternatives, etc.) in aggregation procedures.
Remaining within the framework of the axiomatic approach and based on the consideration of local rules, Arrovian Aggregation Models investigates three formulations of the aggregation problem according to the form in which the individual opinions about the alternatives are defined, as well as to the form of desired social decision. In other words, we study three aggregation models. What is common between them is that in all models some analogue of the Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives condition is used, which is why we call these models Arrovian aggregation models.
Chapter 1 presents a general description of the problem of axiomatic synthesis of local rules, and introduces problem formulations for various versions of formalization of individual opinions and collective decision. Chapter 2 formalizes precisely the notion of `rationality' of individual opinions and social decision. Chapter 3 deals with the aggregation model for the case of individual opinions and social decisions formalized as binary relations. Chapter 4 deals with Functional Aggregation Rules which transform into a social choice function individual opinions defined as choice functions. Chapter 5 considers another model &endash; Social Choice Correspondences when the individual opinions are formalized as binary relations, and the collective decision is looked for as a choice function. Several new classes of rules are introduced and analyzed.

The concepts of Conservation Treatment Methodology grew from that time; as the only objects conservator among paintings specialists, Appelbaum found herself having to provide the rationale for her treatment choices. The author treats objects from both museums and private individuals including artworks such as a Marcel DuChamps urinal. But Appelbaum's passion is the stuff of history - from George Washington's leather portfolio to a Marilyn Monroe dress. She relishes difficult and unusual conservation challenges-- gilded leather, embroidered and painted silk, and other unforgiving materials. The author is active in professional organizations. She publishes and lectures at seminars and meetings for conservators, architects and institutions. Her book Guide to Environmental Protection of Collections (1991) became a classic in the field and is still in use today.

I am delighted to have this book. Barbara Appelbaum has thought through and presented many ideas I have met over the last 30 years as a conservator, but that no one before has put into this kind of focus. She demonstrates the kind of thinking that is critical to responsible care and treatment planning. Thanks you, Barbara, for giving us the benefits of what you have been doing and teaching all these years. This is an enormous contribution to the conservation field. A New Standard, A Great Read for Everyone

Barbara Appelbaum has written a magnificent treatise on a complex subject for all of us, expert and non-expert alike. This book needed to be written, was overdue in the art and decorative art worlds, and fortunately for all of us she took the time and effort to put her pen to paper. The result is an easy to read book, where she unravels the complex without skipping any of the important details. This is a talent that cannot be overstated, particularly in the case of conservation. Museum curators and conservators both need to read it, as the methodology of conservation treatment begins long before any hand is lifted to do the work, a concept she amply and ably deals with to great and useful effect. All collectors also would benefit tremendously by reading Appelbaum's book before dropping a piece off to be conserved or restored; the knowledge gained from this book will ensure the results are more satisfying. The methodology she lays out in the book quite simply sets a clear standard, one that needs to be integrated into any curriculum on conservation if it is not already. We owe Barbara Appelbaum a debt of gratitude for taking this subject on in such a masterful way...buy the book and you will be handsomely rewarded! Thank you Barbara,

Barbara Appelbaum provides a carefully constructed foundation for research and decision-making in our field. Conservation Treatment Methodology will find a welcome home on the shelves many heritage professionals. About the Author

Sir Terry Pratchett, OBE, was the author of more than 70 books, including the internationally bestselling Discworld series of novels. His books have been adapted for stage and screen, and he was the winner of multiple prizes, including the Carnegie Medal. In January 2009, Pratchett was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his services to literature. Sir Terry, who lived in England, died in March 2015 at the age of 66.

Stephen Baxter is an acclaimed, multiple-award-winning author whose many books include the Xeelee Sequence series, the Time Odyssey trilogy (written with Arthur C. Clarke), and The Time Ships, a sequel to H. G. Wells's classic The Time Machine. He lives in England.

Baxter *AND* Pratchett? How can it miss? Well, kind of like this...

Take Terry Pratchett, known for the Discworld stories which are unformly good to superb, full of dry, satirical wit and almost always with a point to make. Take Stephen Baxter, known for his thoughtful, in depth hard SF. Put them together and you get....

Eh.

In truth there is very little Pratchett in this book. There is none of his humor or insight. The hard SciFi was equally disappointing. There are many MANY exciting and fascinating concepts that would have made this pure awesomeness. Believable machine intelligence. Multiple Earths which diverge in physical and biological evolution the further you get from home Earth (Datum Earth in the story). Multiple sapient intelligences springing from differing roots. None of which are explored. There are interactions between humans and non-humans. None of THAT is explored either. There are conflicts between the humans that can visit the parallel Earths and those who cannot. Not explored. There is a world-ending threat. Not explored. There is endless potential here for further stories based on the universe, but this one does nothing except showcase the place. Even the explosion of a pocket nuke in a major urban center is a so-what event.

There is a mish-mash of fantasy/occult and hard scifi - both of which I like, but neither of which dominates the story and neither of which, again, is explored. I know there were a lot of good concepts in this book and you can't explore them all, but for goodness sake explore SOMETHING. Just when you think this might get good, it wanders off onto another tangent or back to a character that is so utterly colorless you couldn't care less about them. Tell me how human society is affected by the "trolls" (one of the species encountered, and the most interesting). Or how troll society is affected by the humans. How the machine sees us and what the implications of it's existence are. There are economic dislocations on datum earth. Tell me about them.

Even the big ending is blah. The world ending threat turns out to be not that much of a threat after all. The book just... stops. Sad and unsatisfying.

Not recommended unless you just HAVE to have everything with either of these authors names on it.

A pennyworth of Pratchett to an intolerable deal of Baxter

The parts of this written by Sir Pterry stand out as brilliant gems in a lump of didactic lecture. Baxter's style reminds me of the tedious 'concept' stories from the so-called 'golden' age of sci-fi where a writer would jaw on and on and on about his ideas. The pacing, frankly, stinks. After hundreds of pages of build-up to the encounter with the telepathic menace... it turns out that all it wanted was a sympathetic ear. Spoiler? Hardly. If someone had warned me before I read this mess, I'd have been spared the loss of a few hours I'll never get back. I've never read a book where a nuclear bomb blast was actually boring. And the ending was obviously a 'cliffhanger' for a sequel, which i will take great pleasure in NOT reading.

When you get a book where the human characters are supposed to be geniuses but act stupid just to show off McGuffins, where a family abandons its child even though that child COULD have been brought along, if carried... I'm sorry. There was not one single character I cared about except the policewoman who has a minor role, and that was probably because she was only in the story in small scenes.

I see Mr Baxter has also piggybacked onto Arthur C Clarke. The Writer As Remora. It might work with a better writer, but in this case it does not. I would give it about -3 stars if that were possible, because Terry Pratchett's ideas deserved a more intelligent and humane execution than this book gave it. A must to avoid.

Interesting premise, no plot, and a random ending

You have to admit, it's an interesting premise. What if, suddenly, mankind had access to a seemingly infinite sweep of parallel universes? Infinite earths nearly identical to our own? A sudden end to all resource shortages? And what if all you needed to get there was a few dollars' worth of simple electronic components?

Pratchett and Baxter take this interesting premise and run it straight into the ground.

It starts badly. The clumsy introduction of Lobsang a few pages in was so awkward and just plain uncomfortable that i honestly put the book down for a few days while i tried to decide if it was worth reading at all.

I did keep reading, though, because until recently i was a huge fan of Sir Terry. (The 'until recently' has to do with his latest solo book, Snuff: A Novel of Discworld, being so bad i could barely finish it.) I've read a few of Baxter's books, and while he's not in my top ten favorite authors, he's usually good enough that, with a solid premise like this, i'd expect an equally solid book. But together they were so much less than the sum of their parts.

The story, such as it is, drags. Most chapters are about Joshua and Lobsang exploring the parallel earths. A few are about a random homesteading family, and a random cop who helped Joshua out when he was younger. Nothing happens. Then more nothing happens. The occasional residual smear of a plot element appears every few chapters, but if you're skimming because you're bored, you'll probably miss it. At some point, a woman joins the Joshua/Lobsang expedition, but instead of being any sort of romantic-tension-inducing situation, it's handled in the utterly sterile fashion of a book aimed at 4th graders.

Then, out of nowhere, a few pages before the end of the book, everything suddenly changes. The writing style, the pacing, the whole feel of the book turn suddenly on a single sentence. Only then do the relevance of the pioneer family and the cop become evident, and even then, you could have cut out all of their back story and it wouldn't make a difference. There's a big-ish, mostly-dramatic climax, and boom, the book ends.

If you're a big fan of either author (or both) and just simply must own a copy of this book, then you're going to buy it no matter what. For anyone else, my advice is to skip it. If you find the premise too promising to pass by, then wait a few months. You'll probably be able to find tons of copies of this in discount bins as others buy it, read it, and discard it promptly.
