A One-Stop Shop
By mkooljr1
No longer do you have to buy a book or search for an article that explains draft/auction strategy, player valuation, in-season strategy, etc separately. Winning Fantasy Baseball has it all in one book. The draft and auction strategy sections were spot on and really drove home some very important points, while identifying many of the mistakes fantasy owners continue to make. Schechter's writing style is easy to read and understand and there is no doubt that your fantasy baseball skills will take a giant leap forward after reading.

Super System for fantasy baseball.
By Michael Cohen
This really is an excellent book on fantasy baseball for just about everyone- if you are a beginner Larry gives you the recipe to start from scratch. And even if you are the most experienced or successful fantasy player around, there will be something in this book that can help you, and certainly make you think. And Larry covers every format too- from single league auctions to salary cap games, to mixed league snake drafts, etc. For a sport as popular as fantasy baseball, there have been very few books really explaining how an expert puts together and maintains a team- until now. Seriously, if you play fantasy baseball and want to better your game, I think you should get this book. And then stay out of my league.

Don't need to rely on "experts" anymore, Schechter teaches you how to do it yourself.
By Davo
I enjoyed reading through Winning Fantasy Baseball, and will continue to reference back to it as I prepare for my drafts, and throughout the season. It is absolutely applicable to both hardcore fantasy players, and beginners. It is dry informational type reading and at times can get pretty nerdy with various player value formulas etc. What this book allowed me to do was learn how to create my own player rankings and values based off my specific league settings and roster construction. What this allows me to do is enter the draft with a rankings list and dollar values that are tailored to my league. I no longer have to print out the same player rankings that everybody else carries into the draft. Developing my own draft guides allows me to see where certain values can be found in a draft. And VALUES is the central theme to this book, and to winning your fantasy leagues.

The Way of the White Clouds, by Anagarika Govinda

'It tells of terrible journeys, of men masked against the sun (riding through ethereal regions with their feet frozen), of welcoming fog-girt monasteries lit by butter lamps at the journey's end' - "New Statesman". "The Way of the White Clouds" is the remarkable narrative of a pilgrimage which could not be made today. Lama Anagarika Govinda was among the last to journey through Tibet before its invasion by the Chinese. His unique account is not only a spectacular and gloriously poetic story of exploration and discovery; it is also invaluable for its sensitive and clearly presented interpretation of the Tibetan tradition. 'Why is it that the fate of Tibet has found such a deep echo in the world? There can only be one answer: Tibet has become the symbol of all that present-day humanity is longing for' - Lama Anagarika Govinda.

Respect: The Life of Aretha Franklin, by David Ritz

"A remarkably complex portrait of Aretha Franklin's music and her tumultuous life." --Rolling Stone

Aretha Franklin began life as the golden daughter of a progressive and promiscuous Baptist preacher. Raised without her mother, she was a gospel prodigy who gave birth to two sons in her teens and left them--and her native Detroit--for New York, where she struggled to find her true voice. After fame and fortune finally came via "Respect," and a rapid-fire string of hits, she has evolved ever since, amidst personal tragedy, surprise Grammy performances, and career reinventions.

Aretha's hold on her crown is tenacious, and in RESPECT David Ritz gives us the decisive and definitive study of one of the greatest American talents of the twentieth century.

Book Explains Aretha And Why She's The Way She Is
By Montoya_Mayan
This book may very well be the definitive biography of Aretha Franklin, an iconic artist who guards her privacy ferociously. I'm sure that she doesn't like it. It lays bare her life and many of the details that she keeps close to her chest. I'm sure she'd prefer that we concentrate on her legendary accomplishments. Her music is the soundtrack of our lives, but just who is Aretha Franklin? The book asks this question and the answers are complicated. Miss Franklin (or the Queen, if you insist--and she, reportedly, does) has lived many lives and been many people: motherless child, favorite daughter, child prodigy, teen mother, battered wife, competitive sister. If this book is to be believed, she is also the most difficult diva this side of Diana Ross. She's loving, while also seemingly incapable of love. She (allegedly) picks up people and drops them the minute they say or do something she doesn't like, no matter how minute, only to pick them up again. She jealously guards her title of Queen of Soul and has feuded with every female singer to come down the pipe in her lifetime, from Mahalia to Mariah to Mary J. I walked away from this book with the impression that Aretha Franklin is a jealous, petty, insecure, insensitive, spoiled, angry woman who has overcome and gone through an awful lot. No wonder she refuses to face reality and would rather live in a fractured fantasy world. She's conquered the world with her music, but Aretha hasn't been so successful when it comes to overcoming her food addiction and fear of heights (flying, in particular). She also can't find Mr. Right. In short, I strongly recommend "Respect," a warts and all account of the very difficult and often sad life of America's premier music diva.

Aretha Should Read It
By T. King
I've heard the stories for years about how difficult Aretha Franklin is known to be -- to fellow performers, making audiences swelter at her shows due to her disdain for air conditioning -- and while I've enjoyed her Atlantic years recordings, her purported attitude always kept me from actually liking HER as a person. Not to mention that about 7 years ago I had the displeasure of encountering The Queen and these old men acting as her footsoldiers at Colony Records in NY when one of her peons tried to tell me where to stand. I had no idea why this old man was in my face and was about to curse him out until I realized that I was getting dangerously close to The Queen as I tried to make my way to the cash register. Who knew? And I was annoyed; if she didn't want to be noticed, then she shouldn't have had on that ridiculous black mink coat in April in NYC. But I digress...

David Ritz has done her a major solid by finally making SENSE of who she is and why she is the way she clearly is. That is the function of a great biographer; to make a reader empathize with the subject, even one we may have had previous unfavorable impressions of. That was brilliantly done here. Now my heart in fact goes out to Aretha Franklin, and understanding the nature of her idiosyncrasies really helps one be able to see past them to take in the full breadth of who she is and what she represents. As an added plus, this was the first book I've read entirely on a Kindle fire, and having Aretha's "Queen of Soul" box set playing on my headphones while reading it was a beautifully immersive experience. I can't wait to experience more music biographies this way.

I understand that Miss Franklin has released statements to the press calling this book a pack of defamatory lies, threatening legal action, etc. I hope she abandons that defensive posture and actually reads this book, and faces what truth lies within. (I acknowledge that there are probably some inaccuracies and one-sided stories, but the majority seems to ring true.) She clearly has issues with denial imperious coldness. Perhaps reading the truth will set her free.

A very enjoyable read. And R-E-S-P-E-C-T to Aretha Franklin.

Finally, the book Aretha fans deserve.
By Andrew Bodnar
This was a fascinating book that was very well written. I like that while Ritz seemed to be in awe of Aretha's talent, he didn't shy away from some of her more unflattering traits as a performer. Like the way she embraces so much cheesy Vegas stuff in her live shows. At one point in the book it was mentioned that she didn't have any female friends. That was very understandable after reading about her personality. The people who Ritz interviewed for the book like her sister Carolyn and her road manager are also candid in a way Aretha has never come close to being.
But some of my issues with the book are that important aspects of Aretha's life aren't given the attention they should. For example, her sister Carolyn was a lesbian but Ritz doesn't even mention how the family or Aretha reacted to it. I think that seemed interesting to be a gay woman during that time in the 70's but Ritz only mentions it in passing. Also her father was murdered during a botched burglary. But Ritz doesn't mention what happened to the people who did it. He doesn't write how much jail time they got, or if there was a trial. That should have gotten at least a couple of pages.
Whenever I see or read Aretha in interviews she only gives nice pat answers and never says much of interest. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Aretha and especially those who were disappointed by her terrible autobiography

A BOLD, EPIC DEBUT NOVEL SET DURING THE WAR AND FINANCIAL CRISIS THAT DEFINED THE BEGINNING OF OUR CENTURY

One September morning in 2008, an investment banker approaching forty, his career in collapse and his marriage unraveling, receives a surprise visitor at his West London townhouse. In the disheveled figure of a South Asian male carrying a backpack, the banker recognizes a long-lost friend, a mathematics prodigy who disappeared years earlier under mysterious circumstances. The friend has resurfaced to make a confession of unsettling power.
In the Light of What We Know takes us on a journey of exhilarating scope―from Kabul to London, New York, Islamabad, Oxford, and Princeton―and explores the great questions of love, belonging, science, and war. It is an age-old story: the friendship of two men and the betrayal of one by the other. The visitor, a man desperate to climb clear of his wrong beginnings, seeks atonement; and the narrator sets out to tell his friend's story but finds himself at the limits of what he can know about the world―and, ultimately, himself. Set against the breaking of nations and beneath the clouds of economic crisis, this surprisingly tender novel chronicles the lives of people carrying unshakable legacies of class and culture as they struggle to tame their futures.
In an extraordinary feat of imagination, Zia Haider Rahman has telescoped the great upheavals of our young century into a novel of rare intimacy and power.

From Booklist
This expansive novel sprawls over the past half-century and has as its primary settings the U.S., the UK, and South Asia. Its nameless narrator is an upper-class Englishman of Pakistani parentage, and its main character and secondary voice is the Bangladeshi-born Zafar, the narrator’s brilliant former Oxford classmate. Our narrator gets ensnared in the banking scandals of the early 2000s, and Zafar in the coterminous conflict in Afghanistan. This is, in part, a novel of international geopolitics going back to American involvement (or inaction) in the South Asian wars of 1971; in part, a novel of global finance; in referential detail, a novel of ideas; and, in addition, a novel of personal relationships in which issues of caste and class figure prominently. The narrator (and the book’s author) has background on Wall Street, and the complex narrative weaves together the strands of worldwide interconnectedness with which both are familiar. This is a big book with grand themes, and while some readers may enjoy its discursiveness, others might wish for a tighter narrative style. --Mark Levine

Review

“Astonishingly achieved . . . In the Light of What We Know is what Salman Rushdie once called an ‘everything novel.' It is wide-armed, hospitable, disputatious, worldly, cerebral. Ideas and provocations abound on every page.” ―James Wood, The New Yorker

“[A] strange and brilliant novel . . . I'm surprised it didn't explode in my hands.” ―Amitava Kumar, The New York Times Book Review

“An ambitious novel by any measure . . . In the Light of What We Know is a novel of ideas, a compendium of epiphanies, paradoxes, and riddles. . . . [A] unique work of fiction bearing witness to much that is unspeakable in human relationships as in international relations, while it is also unknowable.” ―Joyce Carol Oates, The New York Review of Books

“In the Light of What We Know is an extraordinary meditation on the limits and uses of human knowledge, a heartbreaking love story, and a gripping account of one man's psychological disintegration.” ―The Guardian (London)

Learning what we know
By Kathy Perutz
Some months ago, facing long illness, I read Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain, and was enthralled by it, a book that ends with the outbreak of World War I and contains in its pages more or less everything that was known in the Western world at that time. When I finished the book, I felt restless; nothing else could measure up to the intensity and breadth of Mann's great novel. Then I read James Wood's review in The New Yorker, and felt that Zia Haider Rahman's book was exactly what I'd been seeking. As indeed it is. A wonderful book, written in clear prose that never grows arch or hectoring - thereby avoiding even the missteps of Mann - that looks at the world we have inherited in 2014 through the consciousness of a man who is aware of the sides and angles of whatever topic he is concentrating on. A Bengali, he is from the East, whereas his friend the banker (to whom the story is being told) is from Pakistan, the West, with India between them and the legacy of British colonialism all around. Zafar, the protagonist, goes to Afghanistan and finds the same attitudes, the same patronizing views of native inhabitants that he has learned at first hand at home in Bangladesh and in the sitting rooms of London, where he, a brilliant mathematician with an Oxford degree, is often treated as a curiosity, a colonial with a brain. This is only one of a labyrinth of themes that wend their way through this marvel of a book. Through it the reader learns to know what she already suspected, and confronts the reality of confusion and complexity. No either/ors, no good/bad, we are all only partly decipherable selves, containing goodness and violence, love and treachery, radiance and darkness.

A book that truly deserves the extraordinary praise it's receiving
By Leah
Even before James Wood's astonishing review in The New Yorker came out (astonishing because so few novels receive that kind of attention any more, or that kind of space; also because James Wood is famously picky, and he was so full of the most beautiful and effusive praise for this book), I was intrigued by what I'd heard and read about In The Light of What We Know. Now that I've read it -- couldn't put it down -- I understand the praise. It strikes me as the kind of novel an author pours his entire self into (and Wood's review, if it got the author's biographical details right, suggests the same). For that, as readers, or just as people who do care about what one reviewer here called the "Grand Sweep Of Important Contemporary Issues And Ideas," we should be grateful. I am grateful. I'm grateful to any artist who has the courage to grapple with the painful realities of our time (never mind just of one human life), and the imagination to turn that grappling into a story, and the skill to make that story beautiful.

I've never reviewed another book on Amazon, though I'm an avid reader; the couple of negative reviews that have been posted here seemed so wildly inaccurate -- and so gratuitously negative -- that I felt compelled to write. This book may not be for everyone, but if you like some of the best writers of our time -- Naipaul, Sebald, Munro -- you will love this one.

A Novel of Our Century
By Roger Brunyate
Calling Zia Haider Rahman's extraordinary debut novel "the novel of the century" is not necessarily a value judgment, although it is surely one of the best books I have read since the year 2000. But it is a book of immense scope that manages to combine so many of the themes that have dominated public debate in our century: Islam, American neo-imperialism, and the financial recession just for starters. Or, as the narrator puts it at the end of the third paragraph, "the story of the breaking of nations, war in the twenty-first century, marriage into the English aristocracy, and the mathematics of love."

He could have said a few hundred other things; never have I read a book that contained so much fascinating information about every subject under the sun, from ancient history and literature, via music, mathematics and nuclear physics, to carpentry and chess. Everything but the kitchen sink -- but If Rahman had thrown that in also, at least you would have got an informative lesson on practical plumbing, shaped into a metaphor that would somehow have illuminated one of the salient problems of our time. You can get a sense of the author's range by noting the authors of the epigraphs that head each chapter: Winston Churchill, Joseph Conrad, Albert Einstein, TS Eliot, AE Housman, John le Carr, Herman Melville, Edward Said, Tayeb Salih, WG Sebald, Saul Smilansky, and the Bible -- and that's only in the first half-dozen chapters. One of these epigraphs, from Italo Calvino, says something that may well be the grand theme of the entire novel: "Since science has begun to distrust general explanations and solutions that are not sectorial and specialized, the grand challenge for literature is to be capable of weaving together the various branches of knowledge, the various 'codes,' into a manifold and multifaceted vision of the world." It is an audacious ambition, and though Rahman may not totally succeed, he has written one of the most multifaceted novels I have ever read.

Allowing for the countless flashbacks and digressions (and digression here is the name of the game), the novel is essentially an extended conversation between a fortyish banker and an old friend who turns up on his South Kensington doorstep one morning in 2008. The two had known each other years before at Oxford, where both were reading mathematics, and kept in sporadic touch in the intervening years in New York and London. In many ways, they are similar: both of South Asian ethnicity, both with a veneer of polished English manners, both with strong academic track records at Oxford and the Ivy Leagues, both involved for a time at least in international finance, and both bruised by unhappy relationships. But in important ways, they are also different. The unnamed narrator is from a background of privilege: his grandparents were landowners in Pakistan, his parents met at Princeton, his father moved from there to take up a professorship at Oxford, and he himself went to Eton, the premier boys' boarding school in England. Zafar, the surprise visitor, was born in a remote village in Bangladesh shortly after its war of independence from Pakistan. His father moved to London in poverty, working first as a bus conductor and then as a waiter. Zafar attended state schools and scraped his way through Oxford on a scholarship. The differences are important because, like most English novels, this one is largely about class -- but class seen in a far from parochial context, with the politics of patronage and exclusion translated to the world stage.

Unlike the narrator, Zafar did not remain in finance, but went to Harvard to study law, and then returned to Asia. The slow discovery what what he did in those lost years and how his attitudes slowly change is the main plot thread of the book. I was reminded more than once of Moshin Hamid's THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST, except that Rahman's style of storytelling is a good deal less direct (downright difficult, some might say) and he is attempting something rather less obvious. Also lurking in the background, and eventually acknowledged, are THE GREAT GATSBY and THE QUIET AMERICAN. The Fitzgerald comes into play in the relationship between the two main characters, except they are more nearly equal than Carraway and Gatsby. Indeed Rahman's technique of avoiding quotation marks means that two competing "I's" come into play. Although confused at first, I soon got used to it myself, and appreciated the extraordinary flexibility this gives to the narrative, thought slipping imperceptibly into speech, and one character almost merging with the other. At least at the beginning; this starts as a novel of ideas rather than character, yet before the end, the characters have developed as distinct and three-dimensional, and interact with each other in emotional and often painful ways.

Zafar takes the Graham Greene novel with him on a couple of trips to Kabul in 2002, and the parallels to his own situation will be as obvious to him as they are to the reader. On his first evening, he goes to a bar in the UN compound, and is disgusted: "The music was loud, the soles of my feet tingling with the vibrations, a volume to muffle the clamor of sexual gambits unbuckling over the scene. It was a scene of horror. This is the freedom for which war is waged, in the venerable name of which the West sends its working-class heroes to fight and die. If the Afghanis had been asked, would they have allowed this blight on their home? Is this what [we were] fighting for?" Readers who are relieved to find the familiar tropes of political or espionage novel kicking in during the last hundred pages may be disappointed to discover that Rahman has little interest in delivering a simplistic denouement. The novel ends with a photo of Albert Einstein at Princeton walking into the distance with the mathematician Kurt Gdel, whose Incompleteness Theorem is also a talisman for the novel. The inevitable result of a lifetime's search for knowledge is the realization that there is some knowledge we will never possess. For Rahman, the destination is far less important than the journey -- but what a journey!

Not enough
By M. Antillon
I got this book in hopes of preparing me virtually 100% for my exam -_-
It has most of the info needed and covers all the basics in a nice manner. The practice problems are great. However, the exam is more advanced than what is presented in this book and I ended up gathering questions online to practice for the exam because this alone didn't do it. Good thing to have the practice CD but if you plan on taking the test, my suggestion is to look for specific 1z0-051 exam questions online as well.

Fair Study Guide for Exam, Lacking Depth
By gburgalum01
I purchased this book in preparation for the Oracle Database 11g SQL Fundamentals 1 Exam. While the breadth of the material is good as it covers every topic on the exam, the presented examples are extremely simplified and often present a concept in its most basic form. In addition, the exercise questions at the end of each chapter are much too simplified. I downloaded a practice exam from Transcender and was amazed at the difference in complexity between the questions and exams provided by the book and those from Transcender. If you are taking the exam, the questions in the book as well as the exams will not fully prepare you for the exam. I highly recommend purchasing additional practice exams from Transcender; they have the look and feel of actual Oracle exam questions. I did find the study text in this book extremely useful and would recommend it in conjunction with some other study aid.

Very basic.
By U. Cetin
This book is an Introduction to SQL level book. If you know SQL a little bit, you will get very little out of this book. The chapters don't go into detail and the questions seem to be dumbed down - they don't look like realistic certification exam questions. Although it is not a certification book, if you would like to learn Oracle SQL I recommend Oracle SQL by Example (by Alice Rischert). This is one of the best book on Oracle SQL and you will learn a lot from it - not just superficial certification SQL.

Good intro to polymers!
By Justin Bois
I bought this book AFTER I bought polymer physics books by de Gennes, Doi and Edwards, and Yamakawa. I don't recommend you do it in this order! Grosberg and Khokhlov's book is, in my opinion, the best one to start off with. It judiciously takes a scaling-type approach to certain discussions (in a manner similar to de Gennes) and more rigorous mathematical developments in others (similar to Doi and Edwards, but never as detailed as Yamakawa).
I particularly like the way the book is arranged. Each short section (they're usually about 2 or 3 pages or so) begins with a bold face sentence which tells the main idea of the section to follow. This keeps the book coherent even when you want to skip sections.
I would recommend this as your first book in polymer physics, though a reasonable background in statistical mechanics is necessary to understand the material (although very reliable sources have told me that the new book by Rubinstein and Colby is supposed to be excellent as well, but it just came out and I haven't had a chance to read it).

The next sizzling novel of C. L. Parker’s Monkey Business Trio

Hotshot San Diego sports agent Shaw Matthews and his sexy professional adversary Cassidy Whalen have gone head-to-head in the boardroom—and the bedroom. Now Shaw has scored a big promotion—but only because Cassidy turned it down and ran off. There are many things he wants when it comes to Cassidy—just not her pity. So Shaw rushes to a small town in Maine to retrieve his dignity—and maybe the woman he’s hungry to claim once more.

Cassidy has pushed herself to the max to realize her career dreams—until a family crisis brings her home. But Shaw isn’t letting Cassidy go that easily. Neither is gorgeous heartthrob Casey Michaels, the childhood sweetheart she left behind—and who now wants to win her back. As the rivalry between the two alpha males intensifies, and Shaw’s seductive moves reach a whole new level of heat, Cassidy has to make a choice. And this time, it’s for the highest stakes of all.

Getting Rough is intended for mature audiences.

Praise for Getting Rough

“The second Monkey Business contemporary (after Playing Dirty) plunges right into the multifaceted liaison between Shaw Matthews and Cassidy Whalen, secret lovers and openly competitive business associates, as heartfelt emotions, misconceived assumptions, and natural disasters make for rough adventures. . . . Parker’s fast pace, rapier wit, and sharp dialogue perfectly merge with the simmering sexual tension in this lust-to-love tale that fans will devour.”—Publishers Weekly

“Forces of nature conspire to represent the deep emotional involvement between the main characters in this hot-blooded novel by Parker. Mother Nature is also the perfect foil to the lives of the varied inhabitants of this sexy tale. The title is apt as the lovemaking grows from sweet to wild for each willing participant.”—RT Book Reviews

Praise for C. L. Parker’s Playing Dirty

“Fun, action-packed . . . Readers will be eager to read the sequel, hoping for more rough and dirty sexual acrobatics, friendship, backstabbing, and empathy.”—Publishers Weekly

“This snappy, sexy novel moves at breakneck speed, with abundant snark and sports euphemisms. . . . Parker’s penchant for dry humor and vivid, voracious sex scenes breathes life into a well-trodden premise.”—Library Journal

“Parker writes intense storylines that anyone can relate to. Her characters are complex, with long and sometimes turbulent pasts that they have overcome, that still continues to affect their present. . . . I cannot wait to see where she takes this new series.”—Fresh Fiction

About the Author
C. L. Parker is a romance author who writes stories that sizzle. She’s a small-town girl with big-city dreams and enough tenacity to see them come to fruition. Having been the outgoing sort all her life—which translates to “she just wouldn’t shut the hell up”—it’s no wonder Parker eventually turned to writing as a way to let her voice, and those of the people living inside her head, be heard. She loves hard, laughs until it hurts, and lives like there’s no tomorrow. In her world, everything truly does happen for a reason.

Chapter 1

Shaw

“Simi, where the fuck am I?” I growled into my cellphone.

“I don’t know, asshole,” would’ve been an acceptable comeback, given my level of rudeness, but my ever-professional virtual assistant kept her cool. “You’re traveling south on Upper Falls Road.”

You’re, a contraction from a voice-recognition program. Wasn’t technology nifty? Nifty, but not a whole lot of help. Left to figure it out on my own, I had to draw only slightly conceivable conclusions. The best I could tell, the flight I’d taken to Bangor, Maine, had somehow veered off course and into the Bermuda Triangle, which I was now convinced was a wormhole to an alternate universe where interstates hadn’t yet been invented. That or all of this had been an elaborate scheme that my arch nemesis/part-time lover, Cassidy Whalen, had come up with in order to lure me away to a place where she could continue her torture routine and then eat my liver before dumping my body where no one could find it.

Truthfully, I’d be okay with the slightly creepy murder because being forced to endure that look of pity on her face every day for the foreseeable future was a fate worse than death.

I dropped my phone in the nook next to the gearshift, none too gently, thanks to my mounting frustration. I was exhausted, running on fumes after a ten-and-a-half-hour flight and nearing a two-hour drive. My stomach was gnawing at me from the inside, which I suspected was simply for the sole purpose of going in search of food on its own, since I’d placated it only with airplane peanuts.

Simi dinged, either to warn me to take it easier on her delicate structure or to issue a reminder to bust a right onto yet another state route on my journey through God’s country. Thirty-six more miles on winding roads to the island that laid claim to a small fishing village called Stonington. Cassidy’s stomping ground. What in the world was I thinking when I’d decided to hop that flight? Oh, right . . . I’d wanted to give her a piece of my mind. But right now, I wanted a piece of chicken to put in my belly.

Making a left into the parking lot of a gas station, I parked the compact rental car I’d been forced into when no other option had been available and got out. The cartoon chicken on the sign in the window shouldn’t have made me salivate, but it did. Maybe I was on the verge of delirium because gas station chicken wasn’t a smart decision. I’d pay for it later.

The kid behind the counter was patient as I decided between chicken chicken, chicken tenders, or chicken nuggets. As he gathered my tenders and potato wedges, I thought I’d double-check that Simi knew what she was talking about, though I might have used a hushed voice to make sure she couldn’t hear me doing so. The last thing I needed was for her to get an attitude about me not trusting her. Women could be so testy. Even virtual women.

“Hey . . . Dale,” I started, reading his nametag. “Is it normal for there to be a lot of back roads around here instead of interstates?”

Chicken Dale half-laughed. I guess he got that question a lot. “Yep. Where are you going?”

“Uh, Stonington,” I said, taking my boxed meal.

He drew his head back like what I’d said was unusual. “Stonington?”

“Yeah. Why, am I going in the wrong direction? I knew it,” I said, adding a curse under my breath.

“No, you’re going in the right direction. It’s just that no one goes to Stonington unless they’re a local.”

“Is that a bad thing?”

He laughed again. “Depends on who you ask.”

“Great,” I said with a sarcastic smile. “Thanks, man.” I took my box, noticing the grease stains already soaking through. “I’m not going to die from eating this, am I?”

His shrug and expression said it could go either way. I’d make it, or I wouldn’t. Oh, well. We all had to go sometime.

After paying for my heart attack in a box and bottled water, I got back on the road. At least what was supposed to pass for a road, anyway. The winding, unpainted pavement was bad enough, but the bumps along the way reminded me of being a kid in a shopping cart passing over a grooved sidewalk, the vibration from each notch making my ahhhh sound like a symphony of vocal acrobats. I might have even tried it out to prove a point, since there was no one else around to see me making an ass of myself. Until my phone rang, that is.

“Hello?” I cleared my throat, trying not to sound so much like a bullfrog was lodged in it. “Ben?”

“Yo, boss man!” came his far too exuberant response. “How’s Maine?”

“So far, so shitty. What’d you find for me?”

“Well, there are only two places to choose from and one is booked, if you can believe that, but I did score you a nice room at the Whalen House.”

For some reason a massive migraine decided to strike like a lightning bolt from out of nowhere. “Wait. Did you just say Whalen?”

“Yep. And it’s exactly what you think.” I could hear the smile in his voice. “Lair of the ice queen, herself. Cassidy’s parents own the joint. Per the four-and-a-half-star review, it’s a quaint little bed-and-breakfast with a family atmosphere and all the amenities of home. You should fit right in.”

I would’ve growled at him if I’d had the energy. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”

“A little bit.” At least he was honest with me. Unlike Cassidy.

“There’s no other choice?”

“Nope.”

“I’m firing you when I get back.”

“Sure thing, boss. In the meantime, I’m pushing Denver’s contract through to make everything real nice and legal.”

Denver “Rocket Man” Rockford was where all of this had started. Cassidy Whalen and I had been in competition to represent the most coveted quarterback in the league and earn a slice of his pie, along with a partnership at Striker Sports Entertainment. I’d won. On a technicality. Denver had offered the contract to Cassidy first, but she’d turned it down and insisted he give it to me. All after she’d found out I wasn’t the rich playboy I’d let everyone believe I was. If she hadn’t been so goddamn nosy, so judgmental, so determined to pick me apart like I was a toad spread-eagle on a metal tray, I wouldn’t be in a stupid tin can on a fucked-up road heading to a place no one else has ever even heard of.

I shoved my hand inside the greasy box, regretting it instantly when I found the scalding wedges, which must have been pulled from the vat of oil right as I’d walked into the gas station. “Son of a bitch!”

“Okay . . . I can hold it, if you want me to. But I’ve gotta ask. Are you actually changing your mind about scoring the biggest deal of your life?” I’d almost forgotten Ben was on the phone. Maybe I hadn’t been far off the mark with the delirium thing.

“Is that even a real question? Of course not. I just burned myself,” I said, sucking on the wounded finger.

“Funny, I didn’t feel a thing. Ba-dum-bum-ching!” He was a hairsbreadth away from being replaced by Simi.

“Grow up, Ben,” I said, taking charge and acting like a real boss. “Book the room, get the contract on Wade’s desk, and get me on a flight out of here first thing tomorrow morning.”

“You got it. But, uh,” he hedged.

“Spit it out.” I was quickly losing what little patience I had left.

“Just a heads-up, there’s a nasty bit of weather forecasted for Maine over the next few days. Best be prepared for a longer stay, mate.”

“Then you better make sure you get me out of here before it does because I have zero intention of sticking around any longer than I have to, so call me with the details once you’ve got them.” With that, I hung up and tried to get my greasy grub on again.

Having zero intention of sticking around any longer than I had to was exactly right, but it wasn’t like I had a reason to be here in the first place. Christ, what the fuck was I doing in friggin’ Maine? See, Cassidy Whalen had this way about her that got into my head and made me act like a stark raving mad lunatic. Because of that woman, I’d done things I’d never do. Like seduce a co-worker in order to win a contract. Or at least, I’d tried to seduce her. It had backfired. Sort of. But at least I’d gotten my rocks off a time or two in the process, so consolation prize and all. Thing was, I didn’t do second place well, and my consolation prize had skipped town and taken her delectable little pussy with her. I wasn’t okay with that.

Shit. Why wasn’t I okay with that? Over the years, I’d built up a wall to keep the crazy out, and bit by bit, she’d been chiseling away at it and making me feel things. I shivered, the horror of that thought prancing down my spine like a thousand tiny Cassidys doing their victory dances.

Don’t get me wrong, the whole feeling things didn’t mean I’d fallen in love with her or anything. No, the things she made me feel were the same emotions I’d left behind the night I’d watched a man get his head blown off right in front of my eyes. I’d been just a kid, but living in Detroit is a game of survival I’d been forced to learn early on. Feelings equaled weakness. And it wasn’t like I had parents to shelter me from all that bullshit either. My folks couldn’t give a shit whether I lived or died. Hell, they probably would have preferred I’d died because at least then maybe they could collect some sort of check on me.

With a frustrated growl, I shook the fucked-up situation with my parents out of my head because thoughts like those wouldn’t further my goals in life. They were behind me. That life was behind me. I’d been moving forward since the day I became a man at the ripe old age of nine. Having no mother to coddle you after you’d just witnessed a brutal, bloody murder sort of put things in perspective. No one was going to take care of that little boy but the man he was meant to be. And the only way anyone could ever hurt me was if I gave them the ammunition to do so.

I’d worked hard to make my way in life. And I’d taken every opportunity I could to further my cause, but being handed a contract that had originally been offered to a fucking woman smarted. It was emasculating. Though I had no intention of backing down from the mother of all contracts, regardless of how I’d gotten it, the first thing I needed to do was reclaim my manhood. And at the moment, Cassidy Whalen was holding my balls in her purse. Once I got them back, I could put her and all the touchy-feely stuff behind me once and for all.

Deer Isle–Sedgwick Bridge loomed before me like a four-hundred-foot iron sentry that would either grant access to my destination or turn into a rolling and twisting amusement park ride to dump me into the waters of Eggemoggin Reach below. Obviously, the amusement would not be mine. But as luck would have it, I crossed without issue. The steel suspension cables even stayed in place, and I was fairly certain the ominous laughter I’d thought I’d heard had been only my imagination having playtime with the natural creeks and groans of metal on metal. Christ, I needed some sleep before the boulders scattered about the landscape turned into rock people frolicking through blueberry fields.

Rock people did not exist. Just like the bumps in the road were not made by genetically altered super mole spies with ninja reflexes sent to keep track of me, and the sandbar supporting the causeway to Deer Isle would not turn into quicksand to suck me down to Middle Earth. But my phone was ringing.

Cannot Get Enough!!!
By Ashley S.
"It's the eye of the storm," he whispered. "But it isn't over yet. In fact, things are about to get rough again. Are you ready?"

I certainly thought I was ready, but I had no idea what I was actually getting myself into emotionally. Getting Rough, as mentioned by C.L. Parker in her Author's Notes, was a very personal journey of breaking down walls, coming to accept new things in life, and, ultimately, taking exactly what you want out of that life. I cannot even begin to describe how evident she made that for her readers throughout the whole story and, thinking back on it, now everything makes a whole lot more sense. The heart that she poured into this book is what makes it a 6+++ star favorite for me. Not only did she have me laughing hysterically at Shaw and his antics and thoughts, but also hoping for so much more from two characters who could not have been more perfect for one another. It is rough at some points (as the title suggests) with two such dominant characters vying for what they think will fulfill their lives while allowing their stubborn personalities to crush all thoughts of happiness at the same time; Shaw's broken past that has led him to a guarded present and Cassidy's fairytale upbringing that is keeping her from finding her true Happily Ever After.

As we move through the book, we see old walls crumbling and new ones being forged with the love of family (and unofficial family), acceptance of a past that is no more, and the hope of a future that can heal two lost souls. The chemistry and banter between the H and h, although expected by how amazing it was in the first book. was even better this time around. Being in a different setting with more personal realizations coming to the forefront made it possible for reality to break through and knock both Shaw and Cassidy on their asses. It was fabulous to experience since I'm sure most readers, myself included, wanted them to recognize exactly what we have been seeing in two books now. I have to say that I loved everything about this book; from the lightheartedness to the more serious and then to the most serious, the childhood fantasies that became reality, and the lust that turned into love. This book had it all for me and I would be remiss if I didn't put my highest recommendation behind it. Well done, once again, Ms. Parker. I will be one of the first to pick up Coming Clean upon release!

...funny, adorable & erotic & moving second book in this amazing series!!!
By Bianca @BJsBB
4.9 Stars
Do we all remember how the first book ended?
I had to do a little re-read to remember >> #BooksAlzheimers!!!
Cassidy and Shaw were both fighting with all they had to get the partner position in their sports agency.
And at the end of book #1 Cassidy would've signed this most important client, which would've gotten her the job - BUT - she declined and let Shaw have it all! He accepted, but he can't be bested by a girl just like that!!!
Why did she do that? Why did she let him win?
Because he told her about his sad childhood? Because they had sex? Why?
Only one way to find out - ask her!
But she's gone!
Gone home to Maine, to take care of her parents' Bed & Breakfast, because her mom broke her leg.
And what does Shaw do? Call her? Nope - he follows her to Stonington, Maine. This adorable little fisher island town.

But Shaw is not the only one after Cass.
There's also her bestest and oldest friend Casey.
The hottest guy in town. And he's still single and still interested!
Casey was always hoping for a happy ever after with the girl he grew up with.
And Shaw? Never did any happy ever after thought ever cross his mind. But Cassidy?
She changed him.

Lots of sexiness happens in Maine....
But of course our darlings will still have some fighting to do, to get to their Happy Ever After!!!

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO SHAW & CASSIDY??
WILL THERE BE A HAPPY END????
What about Casey? What about this new character Mia?
Will there be a horrible Cliffhanger??
I'm not telling you, of course ☺
Ok, there WILL be a tiny little Cliffy ...

Great 2nd book!
I really enjoyed it!
It was something completely different from the first one. We're not in San Diego anymore - no boardroom deals - no suits - no big money.
We're in this cute little town where everybody know everybody else's business.
And poor Shaw doesn't fit in at all. He would love to fit in though.
All that home-cooking and cookie-baking and those nice old ladies. He wishes that one of them would adopt him. He had a horrible childhood back in Detroit.
But he's not in town to get adopted. He wants to talk to Cassidy - and maybe take her to bed a few times - and then go back home.
But there's this Casey guy sniffing around his Cassidy!!!
It was so adorable to read about poor Shaw fighting for something he didn't even know he wanted.
We have LOTS of verrrry sexy scenes!!!
And lots of very moving scenes!!!
Poor Shaw, poor Casey --- lots of awwww moments!

I really enjoyed this book - and I loved the location and Cassidy's & Casey's family. All so adorable and loving.

Were there some things I didn't like?
Hmm....maybe the way Shaw talks too much to us or rather to himself. He digresses here and there and everywhere - it's a tiny bit too much. But he's still an amazingly cool guy!!!
Also - this whole second book was NOTHING like the first one.
I kinda had this whole cheesy Nora Roberts Romance Feeling.
This cozy little island with lots of sexi romance happening. BUT I loved that - it was just so far away from book #1 and from how our darlings acted in book #1 ☺

►► GETTING ROUGH was the perfect second book in this series!
Very funny & adorable & moving & erotic!! Go and get yourself some Shaw & Casey! ♥
And please Ms. Parker - GIVE. ME. COMING. CLEAN. asap!!!☺☺☺

just as good as the first
By Booklover Mary
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

When Shaw finds out that Cassidy has left San Diego for her Maine hometown, his first thought was to go after her and let her know that he didn't like her "letting" him win, so that's what he did. He couldn't let get away with feeling sorry for him and giving him the partnership. He wanted to earn it, like he did everything else in his life.

Cassidy didn't let Shaw win. She turned the contract down because her family was more important than being made partner at the sports agency where they worked. Her Dad had called and told her that her mother was in the hospital and they would need help keeping the B&B that her mother owned going while she recouperated.

Shaw was surprised to learn that Cassidy hadn't turned down the offer to represent Denver due to her feelings for him, but rather because of her feelings and obligation to her family. Never having had a typical, or even an atypical family, he doesn't know how to process it. Determined to learn more about this side of Cassidy, he decides to stay for a few more days.

Cassidy is glad that she can be of help to her parents, but she's already tired of the inevitable questions about how long she's staying and when she's coming home for good. Grateful for the Casey's friendship, she relies on him to the buffer she needs, even though their romance ended long ago.

During the time Shaw and Cassidy spends in Maine, each come to some hard and harsh realizations about themselves and each other. When it comes down to it, its time to shut up or grow up.
