Excellent book for Oracle DBA who need to manage SS

This is an excellent resource for Oracle DBAs who have to manage SQL Server databases. The author understands an Oracle DBA's perspective of looking at the database and has explained the how-to for SS DB from that perspective. Understanding the architecture of a new database can be daunting, esp. if you are an Oracle DBA and know the importance of understanding the architecture. I have not found many books which do a good job at it.
The book is complete in the topics and can get an Oracle DBA or anyone who wants to manage a SS Database, to get to the job with the help of the understanding that is gained from this book.

A wish this book had been around years ago

A fellow DBA at my company and I have remarked over the years that it would be so great if there was a book for Oracle DBAs that explained the correspondence between commands and techniques for SQL Server versus Oracle. Now it's here so we ordered a copy. These days, most employers want you to take care of SQL Server databases as well as Oracle ones so this book fills an important need. I will update this review when I've finished the book. I'm only on Chapter five now but, so far, excellent.

About the Author
Norm Stamper began his law enforcement career in San Diego in 1966 as a beat cop. In 1994, he was named chief of the Seattle Police Department, where he set about implementing many of the initiatives he writes about in Breaking Rank. Retiring in 2000, he now lives in a cabin on a mountain in the San Juan Islands in Washington State.

Fantastic reading, however, it is something that I have known for a long, long time. There are many racist who slip under the line and become police officers in order to kill with impunity...Real good reading! It is past time for the good cops to step up.

A Valuable Resource for Police Reform

This is a valuable book for any city experiencing the types of challenges that Stamper addresses: Excessive use of force, unnecessary police shootings, the dangerous militarization of local police forces, poor police-community relationships, and more. Stamper is sometimes harsh in his judgments but he invariably subjects his own attitudes and actions to the same criticisms. He also describes the type of person who makes a good cop. This is someone who is able to be committed to the work but not prone to impulsive acts. Any citizen group concerned about their local police force will find this resource helpful.

CIOs are in for a shock when they read REDESIGNING HEATLHCARE DELIVERY: A Practical Guide to Reengineering, Restructuring, and Renewal recently published by Boland Healthcare. This nine hundred plus page book documents why most health care organizations are not working well and what they must do to meet customer needs. What is startling about this book is the level of detail it goes into in describing just how far hospitals, medical groups, and managed care companies must go to improve quality and lower costs at the same time.
This forty chapter book was written by operational experts as a comprehensive survival guide to managed care. It offers step-by-step instructions and case studies for redesigning inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory care. With a hundred plus tables and figures, it describes methodologies, strategies, and techniques to improve performance and document value.
The book draws on a "best practices" approach to information system design and management that shows how to refocus core functions and services around customer needs-rather than traditional provider priorities and values. A Great Introduction to C#

I think this book does a great job of introducing the basics of the C# programming language. I read the book cover to cover and did all the exercises and even created a few of my own. I feel pretty good about basic OOP concepts now. Mr. Bako seems to have a way with making those concepts simple, relatively straight forward and I no longer feel that I'm on shaky ground with OOP at this level of depth.

The book introduces C# using the console window and does not teach the .NET Framework. I think this is a logical progression in C# and you'll be glad you finished the book. I'm guessing that (.NET) may come in the next book that Mr. Bako writes for C#. Honestly, I can hardly wait for it. When will that book get written and published? That's hard to tell.

I highly recommend this book as an introduction to the language. You'll get your feet wet with C# and you'll make sense of the language to where you won't be lost when it comes to incorporating the .NET Framework later. If you already program in another language, you'll whiz right through this book. If you're new to programming period, you won't get lost and you'll feel much more confident in using your new skills. You'll gain that confidence if you make sure that you do all the exercises in the book. They're not hard and they get you thinking. Definitely worth the time it takes to do them.

Here's hoping Mr. Bako writes the intermediate level C# book soon. I haven't seen anything showing that it is in the works. Only a comment or so written in the book. I'm currently working on the .NET framwork with C#. Call it impatience, but I need to keep going with the language.

The book does a great job of teaching the very basics of C#. If you're on the fence about getting it, don't hesitate and go for it! The price is right and it's not a 1000 page tome to muddle through either.

Another great Joes2Pros book

I own 3 other Joes2Pros books on SQL, and when I saw there is another Joes2Pros book out, I didn't have to think twice to purchase this new C# book. I've had such great experiences with Joes2Pros books, I am basically waiting for each one as soon as it is fresh off the press. I was new to SQL, and when I finished the 3 Joes2Pros SQL books, I feel like a Pro. C# is widely used in the tech job market, and by the time I was done, this regular Joe truly feels like a Pro. This book is written in a very clear way, and really helps you understand the C# language. I love all the Joes2Pros books, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to clearly understand C#, and actually have fun and enjoys it while learning.

Joes2Pros saved my life

I was attending a college class on C# programming in the .net environment and the instructor was teaching theory and then not letting us learn how to program. I was in big trouble, and was way behind. A fellow classmate suggested the Joes2pros book on c#, so I got it.

What an incredible difference. It literally opened my eyes to what I was trying to learn. Every chapter was well paced and well thought out. There were plenty of opportunities to code and to learn new skills. and each chapter's skills were building all the way through the book. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. I cannot recommend the Joes2pros series enough. Fantastic.

Immerse yourself in the world of Perim...like, now!

Chaotic - The M'arrillian Chronicles: The Khilaian Sphere is set many, many years before the time of the card game. The Mipedian high mugess, Khilai, discovers a stone that can heighten psionic abilities. She and her muge apprentice Varakarr work on the stone and shape it into a sphere; the Khilaian Sphere. Then, the M'arrillians, still living in secret from the other tribes and very attuned to mental capabilities, sense it and one of their fluidmorphers, M'ahadil, sets out to retrieve it. If M'ahadil succeeds, the M'arrillians will be able to conquer all of Perim.

Let's get my potential bias out of the way: I'm a Chaotic player. Chaotic is the only trading card game I actually like. I think it's awesome. But I don't think that will get in the way of a fair review. I think Aaron Rosenberg did a good job in capturing the world of Perim. It's a fascinating place, and he makes it known, describing different locations, the mugic, everything. We get a lot of insight on the tribes, none of which are supposed to be good or bad. I recommend anyone who is interested in the Chaotic franchise to start here. And you know, that's kind of why I think my bias isn't a problem; Chaotic is nothing new to me. I already know everything I could know from the outset, so I didn't have the sense of discovery a newcomer would have. If there's anything bad I can say about Rosenberg's writing, it's that he had a lot of "ands" where he should have had commas, and I could use an onomatopoeia or two here and there.

Khilai, Varakarr and M'ahadil are the most focused on. Khilai was wise and endearing, very fond of her apprentice, convinced that Perim is forever doomed to uneasy peace. Varakarr is the young and un-jaded kind of guy who hates the distrust between the tribes. He feels that if no one else is going to try for trust, he will have to. M'ahadil's perspective is pretty unique and believable, you can truly see that the surface world is very alien to him. M'ahadil was alright as a character, but the thing is, the M'arrillians don't really seem to have a reason for wanting to attack the drylanders. This is strange, as it makes them look like villains, and yet the morality of Perim is supposed to be ambiguous. It felt really forced. I don't want the M'arrillians to be villains anymore than I want the Overworlders to be heroes. Yetch...

If you're already familiar with Chaotic, you definitely need to check this out. Here we find out just what happened to Kaizeph, and we learn new things about it too. It also turns out that mugic was used in a different way before the heptagons. What bothered me is that in any era of Perim, no one seems to know what happened before. Reading about the age that this book takes place in raises a lot of questions, the creatures apprently not knowing that much more than the reader dows. Of course, this is the book that explains the M'arrillians' mind-control powers, and it's interesting to see what they were like before. It's surprising that it all started with the Mipedians. Speaking of which, fans of that desert-dwelling tribe will be enthralled to see a certain Mipedian monarch...

From the get-go, the Khilaian Sphere might not sound all that interesting. I mean come on, a mystical artifact is discovered and then evil forces try to get it? Well, don't let that turn you away. Like I said, there isn't supposed to be a good or bad tribe, there are just tribes (even if that theme isn't completely nailed). Plus, the Khilaian Sphere is a quite the tragic book, with anything but a happy ending. I excitedly await the next book in The M'arrillian Chronicles.

It was an interesting story. It explained a few things about Perim, the world that it takes place in, and gave some answers to questions not given in the cartoon, Chaotic. You don't have to know what happened in the cartoon to fallow along with the plot. Rosenberg is a skilled writer, and he was able to give a perfect picture of what the creatures and locations look like.

I was able to read it in one day so it felt short to me.

The ending was left on a cliffhanger, and there isn't a second book that I can find. I think there was going to be more books after this one that would pickup where this one was left off, but for whatever reason they weren't published. Probably because the Chaotic franchise wasn't doing too good at the time this book was published.

I would recommend it to any Chaotic fan, or any one who likes fantasy stories.

The Ending is Confusing

I will admit, the book manages to capture several aspects of the wonder of Chaotic. I also applaud how it tries to explain the lineage of Chaotic's creatures along with how their Mugic works within their world. The only issue I have is that the ending was horribly confusing. Not because I didn't understand what happened, but because it doesn't align with the Chaotic TV show's story. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed the read, and I'm sure the ending could be extended and explained in a second book, only I doubt that will happen.

Personally , this is an amazing book that anyone interested on boost NA engines or already boosted engines, should have in our library. The book have excelent theoretical and practical information about turbos and superchargers including good information about tuning. Is easy to read for the beginners and have enough detailed information for experts.

I highly recomend you read this book as a place to start to help you decide the path you want to take as well as tuning.

If you want to understand the why and the theory behind forced induction buy this book. Most the other turbo or supercharging books I've flipped through in borders and the like, but your unlikely to find this book on the shelves based on my experience.

If you want the 'how to' look at the books by corky bell. If you have a mustang and want a kit some of the other books may suit you. For a true understanding of the subject this is your bible.

What can I say except 'brilliant'. I read Bell's other book "Four Stroke Performance" and I loved it alot. When I finally got this one, I couldn't put it down. The best book on turbo and forced induction theory I've read. A must for those who want to learn whatever thay can on the subject.

Love Big Head Bio Books----and Reagan

My kids love the Big head Bio Books. My 6 year old loves to read anything but my 8 year especially loves History. These books are great. Though the book doesn't go into dramatic detail it does give a fast sweeping historical look of Reagan. Fun book.

This book does not even begin to express the great contribution made to the conservative cause by one of the greatest presidents in American History. It is as if the author knows nothing about the contribution of Ronald Reagan and is purposefully avoiding the major issues. Although the book is for kids, at least some background regarding the effort to reduce the size and scope of government would be appropriate. The publisher should have found an author who appreciates the scope of the Reagan presidency.

Revelations from the Stars

Carol Allen's writing is straightforward, poignant, and concise -- yet thorough. Her depiction of compatibility delves deeper than just the surface aspects of having the same interests, desires, and attraction. It's not enough to be committed to each other, she says. There has to be a commitment to the idea of a "long-term relationship." There has to be an acknowledgment of the value of the relationship to ensure that the relationship doesn't age, to have fun, to give time for connection and intimacy. However, it is important to note that these attributes need to occur naturally and spontaneously. In addition, being compatible is not enough. It has to be the right timing, the couple needs to have good relationship skills and are ready for a relationship, as well. Carol mentioned the 5 critical keys to a lasting relationship, which you can learn more from her e-book, Love is in the Stars, or by signing up for her newsletters.

Carol's stance on the idea that our actions are sometimes driven by our yearning to feel loved and appreciated has some truth to it. She stated that this need is second to the necessity of survival. For instance, having success is great, but if we are not acknowledged, appreciated, praised, and are able to share this success with those close and important to us, the success means very little to nothing.

Moreover, I appreciate the fact that Carol gave an overview of the differences between the Tropical and Sidereal zodiacs and their origins. This is helpful to those who are not too familiar with the two zodiacs. It was interesting to learn that my signs for the ancient Hindu system were different from the Tropical zodiac. However, as Carol commented, I could relate to the different signs in the Western and Eastern zodiacs. After learning more about my true signs in Vedic Astrology, I had a better understanding of my personality. I like Carol's approach to her book. It's as if you're the only one she's speaking to...as if she's your close female friend looking out for your best interest and you can relate to her because she has gone through the things you have. She has a great sense of humor -- I couldn't help but laugh when she mentioned there was a "planet of KINKINESS" in chapter 6. In the conclusion, she shares about the Cycles of Saturn report, which I purchased a while back and it has been helpful for me to accept and understand my situations in life and to be able to move forward. Overall, this was an insightful read.

Carol Allen is the real deal

I thought this would be a fun, juicy read for star-struck Anglophiles (OK, me) when it was time to put down all the must-do, have-to reads. I was right. And I was wrong. It is fun, and Carol's style is friendly and readable. But there's a bit more to it than that.

If you were to crack open a book on Vedic astrology, and I have, you might be hit with calculations that make your head spin, or at least make you want to close the book. Carol has digested the information, combined it with modern relationship insights and translated it for the rest of us.

I enjoyed the peeks into the royal couples' inner workings, but I also got a taste of how to look at relationships through the wisdom of Vedic astrology, which predates the modern western astrology that most of us are familiar with.

The best take-away was the objectivity with which the author looks at relationships. She talks about what to look for (and look out for) in various pairings and stresses that whether a relationship is viable, or whether you've even had a successful one, is not really anyone's fault. It's a nice introduction to a different process of understanding unions.

Good, but could be a little better

I thought it was a very interesting read, and I liked seeing how the various couples fit or didn't fit together. It seems quite appropriate given who she's dealing with. However, (a) as someone else said, a lot of this is ads (considering how most folks who bought this are already on the mailing list, it's kind of preaching to the choir), and (b) I would have preferred to see a bit less ads and a bit more explaining of how she came to the conclusions that she did. I am interested in trying to understand Vedic astrology, but sometimes it was kind of vague as to what meant what. I guess I would have just liked to have been able to understand for myself better.
