Neil "Bull" Larsen loves baseball more than anything. But when he submits his four-year baseball diary as his senior project, he is prompted to take a closer look at his life - and learns some important lessons about himself.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up. "On the seventh day God made baseball." For Neil "Bull" Larsen and his best friend, Jeff Hanson, baseball has been their life for as long as they can remember, hence their pet saying. For his senior project, Bull decides to chronicle his high school baseball career by filling in the details of the diary he has been keeping. The teen, by choice, lives with his widowed grandfather while his business-executive single mom imparts advice from her home in California. While baseball is the major focus of this story, Bull also faces the challenges common to adolescents including dealings with family, friends, the opposite sex, and school. He comes to grips with the death of a friend who became a rival due to their interest in the same girl, and with the fact that despite his talent, a life-long dream of professional baseball might be in reach for Jeff but not for him. Carter pens a sure hit for baseball fans as plenty of riveting game action is detailed. Though a few fairly mild curse words are present, all-in-all this is a gentle coming-of-age story that, while not a gripping page-turner, results in an enjoyable read.?Tom S. Hurlburt, La Crosse Public Library, WI

From Booklist
Gr. 7^-10. Unlike many sports novels, Bull Catcher does more than pump up its readers for a do-or-die game against the crosstown rivals. Carter takes a deeper look at sports, competition, and what it takes to succeed. Neil "Bull" Larsen and his best friend, Jeff Hanson, see everything through the prism of baseball. They play the game almost year-round, constantly pushing themselves to play at a higher level. In high school, Jeff single-mindedly pursues the college scholarship he hopes will lead to a pro career, while Bull begins to realize the game doesn't give him everything he wants and starts to explore life off the field. In the end, although Jeff wins a scholarship and Bull doesn't, it is clear which boy has the brighter future. Jeff's characterization is a little flat and the author's hand is a bit heavy when it comes to describing Jeff's passion for baseball. But in Bull, Carter has created a likable (though far from perfect) young man whose experiences on and off the field have readied him for the real world. Randy Meyer

From Kirkus Reviews
The rise of Neil ``Bull'' Larsen, from fledgling freshman ballplayer to starting catcher on his senior championship team, is captured against a background of adolescent love, sweaty afternoons on the baseball diamond, and nights of summer-camp fun: in other words, a soap opera for pre-teen boys and a fantasy for budding baseball players. Bull is a burly guy who can't clear the bases as fast as he'd like, but his smarts, wry sense of humor, and commendable devotion quickly dispel the dumb-jock stereotype. As Bull recounts for a senior project, baseball is all that he and his best friend, Jeff Hanson, ever think about. Carter (Between a Rock and a Hard Place, 1995, etc.) packs his narrative with action on the field and also shows the young athletes off-season: lifting weights, running sprints, and dreaming about spring training. Off the field, Bull and Jeff bridge cultural differences when they transform a Vietnamese transfer student into a star pitcher; moon over pretty, unattainable girls; and help their teammate Billy escape from an abusive father. At the end of senior year, Bull is unchanged by Billy's accidental death, his break-up with a girlfriend, and the realization that he will never play pro ball. In fact, the story ends without any sign that he's going to take even tentative steps toward maturity. Good as far as it goes, but incomplete. Bull Catcher is a great book for teenage baseball fans.
By A Customer
Neil "Bull" Larson is a very big kid who loves to play baseball (he is a catcher). His mom is a businesswoman who lives in L.A. Bull's grandma died when he was still a little kid so now he lives with just his grandpa. He goes to High School in Shipley, Wisconsin, and plays baseball for the school's team. In the beginning, Neil is playing for the jayvee team as a Junior. A Vietnamese kid named Phuong moves to their school and Bull and his best friend, Jeff (shortstop), try to convince him to pitch for their team, but it was a lot harder than they had expected. They saw him to be a great pitcher because of his long arms. They were right that he could throw hard, and he was also very accurate. For the first ten minutes anyway. He just started throwing wild and everything. After a while, Phuong decided that this was not for him, so he decided that he did not want to play baseball. After a couple of days, Jeff began to get really mad at him. Bull talked to Phuong and found out why this always happens to him. He said he just concentrates to hard. So, Bull worked on Phuong's control with pitching. By the time that the season started, he decided to play baseball. Neil and him were so good that the next year they played varsity as Sophomores. Bull felt bad that he made to varsity before Jeff did. That year they finished third. The next year, Jeff was on varsity with everyone else, and he was named captain. They were tied for first place going into a tiebreaking final game of the year. They lost that and is was very tough for Bull to get over it. That summer, he became a counselor at a summer camp and had a great time.

Bull catcher
By Mr.Francesco Raphael Galardo of the Catskills
Bull Catcher was a good book. It had a lot of forshadowing in it maybe a little too much because it was always giving you clues and little hints about things that were going to happen latter on in the book and when you put it down you already figured out what was going to happen so you didn't want to start reading it again. The book had a lot of sttings in it and that made the book good because sence it had a lot of settings in it so it was always discribing somthing.
The book was about two kids that there life long dream is to play baseball for the major legues. They play baseball all the time even during the winter that is how much they love baseball. One kid is a realy good catcher and his name is bull. The other one is a pretty good pitcher and a realy good short stop and he nows his stuff, his name is Jeff.
The two kids meet this exchange student from Korea that is a realy good pitcher he just doesn't know it yet and his name is Phuong. They all try out for the school varcity baseball team after they work on Phoung's pitch. Jeff played like he usaely does and its good but its not what the coach wants so he gets benched. Phuong and Bull doe good so there second behind the starters.
Bull gets in trouble he can't play for a little while and a whole big goes on becuase his team is playing there rivalsand he dosen't get to play and he turned sixteen so his grand pa wants him to drive there but he doesn't want to watch the team.
I would tell you more but it would ruin the story for anyone who wants to read the story's. I recommend it to every one because it's a great book and it has a little bit of every thing in it.

Bull Catcher
By Josh
If you like baseball and surprises, you don't won't to miss Alden R.Carter's version of Bull Catcher. The book starts out with Neil Larsen alsoknown as Bull when he is in the ninth grade.
Bull and four of his friends are about to try out for baseball at their school. Out of the four of them that tried out, three of them made it to varsity. The one kid that didn't make it to varsity was really mad, but he decided that it was better than nothing. The varsity's first couple of games they played wasn't that good but then a new guy came to their school and tried out as pitcher. Bull was in charge of making the new pitcher the best in the league. After Bull worked with Phoung he did become the pitcher in the league. I know that because the coach said to Bull "Good job, now we have the best pitcher". During one of Bull's summers during his high school career, he went to a camp to be a counselor. While he was at camp he meet a girl that he liked so much that when he was around her, he couldn't talk right. He started to be able to talk to her when camp ended. The next summer he was going to go there again, but his mom made him go to L.A. with her. While Bull was in L.A. one of his friend got killed by drinking and driving.
Other than that, I think that Bull Catcher is a interesting book.

A "cookbook" is better organized.
By C.V. Sharkey
I have to agree with "Don't waste your money." I'm just getting into this and I NEED basics. Like, how to connect categories to your menu, which I simply can not find in this book. Nor does the index in the back of the book cover simple basic topics. And maybe what I'm looking for really is in the book. I should NOT have to read every piece of the book in order to find what I need because it lacks this simple form of organization.
How simple is it? OK--I want to add a product, first I want to add the categories. Fine. Then the products, fine. But why isn't the MENU listing my categories? When you click on one of the products it shows the path--but nowhere else. It's NOT IN THE BOOK. So don't tell me about all of the advanced widgets that I may want to enable down the road--be a basic cookbook. Don't waste my time.

Air America, by Christopher Robbins

The incredible inside story of the world's most extraordinary covert operation. Air America - a secret airline run by the CIA - flew missions no one else would touch, from General Claire Cennault's legendary Flying Tigers in WW II to two brutal decades cruising over the bomb-savaged jungles of Southeast Asia. Their pilots dared all and did all - a high-rolling, fast-playing bunch of has-beens and hellraisers whose motto was 'Anything, Anywhere, Anytime'. Whether it was delivering food and weapons or spooks and opium, Air America was the one airline where you didn't need reservations - just a hell of a lot of courage and a willingness to fly to the bitter end.

Interesting, informative, and insightful. This book brings a lot of information together about the CIA and its operations. I now understand about the war in Laos.

The book blows the movie away!
By Kristen Ostrom
Don't let the fact that Mel Gibson and Robert Downey, Jr. are on the cover of this book (to promote their movie "Air America") fool you!

Once you read the book, you will quickly find that the movie and the book really only share a title. In fact, if I were Christopher Robbins, I would have taken the money that Hollywood paid me for the film rights, refinanced the "100-acre wood," and gone off to live with Tigger and Pooh! (Ok, I know. They are not the same people.) I would then divorce my name from any association with the B-grade film that utterly and completely failed to tell the story of these brave Americans who helped support the U.S. war efforts in Southeast Asia.

Aside from the arguably inaccurate chapter dealing with Air America's trafficking of opium, Robbins' research was well received by both former Air America personnel, and eventually, the CIA. I would recommend this book to any aviation/history enthusiast who enjoys reading about the exploits of paramilitary aviation operations.

The book is definitely worth reading . . . just put a bunch of masking tape on the cover. That way you won't be embarrassed if someone on the subway sees you reading it!

Grab this book if interested in the war in Southeast Asia
By S. G Spires
This book sparked a small controversy when it was released in 1979 because it was one of the first to take a serious look at America's "secret" war in Laos and Cambodia.
Robbins did a fine job by interviewing pilots and showing what it was like to fly, fight and survive what many thought was a backwater to the Vietnam war. I thought he was very fair to the men who fought there.
Catch his other book, if you like this one, "The Ravens." Released almost a decade later, in 1987, "The Ravens" tells the story of secret Forward Air Controllers, or FACs, who controlled air strikes during the Vietnam War. Robbins got even better stories for "The Ravens." Both books are kind of hard to find though. You have to buy them used.
