Jeff Lupetin Jeff Lupetin has been a national voiceover talent for over 30 years and a teacher for close to 15years. Check out his voice content on Loopytalk.com and his teacher tips on Ultimate Voiceover.com. His book, “Ultimate Voiceover” is available at Acting Studio Chicago and on Amazon as a paperback or e-book. Currently, Jeff is the new retail voice for HH Gregg furniture and appliance stores. In addition, he is a news narrator for TouchVision Tv.com. In the past, Jeff has voiced nationally for Off products and Coors Extra Gold, winning the Fairfax Cone award for excellence. His character work includes national spots for Raid as one of the infamous Raid bugs and as “I am Hungry” for McDonalds. Locally, Jeff was the Lotto Wizard for the Illinois Lottery and the voice of the “Fun for Some” campaign. Jeff has had a wide range of voice experiences and careers. Older gamers know Jeff as the voice of Gillian Seed in the Hideki Kojima video game, Snatcher. He still can be heard on the “Twilight Zone Radio Show” nationally. You may have caught him on the Oprah Winfrey Show in the 1960’s retro show, voicing and on-camera. Jeff’s career began as a children’s program announcer for WFLD-TV and WGBO-TV Super 66 in Chicago. This and his original Spoken Word material, “The Making of Dangertown” can be found on You-tube. Jeff hails from Ossining, NY and graduated from Northwestern University with a Radio-TV-Film degree. He is a Jeff Citation winner for the improvisational review, “MegaFun” with the Practical Theater company at Second City ETC.  Jeff created the Intermediate Voiceover class for ASC and is also an adjunct professor at Columbia College, teaching Voice for Animation. I Can't Recommend It Enough

Jeff Lupetin was one of my favorite professors at college with his Voice Acting For Animation class. He is such a great wealth of knowledge and experience, and this all comes forward in this extraordinary book. I can't recommend it enough, for any level of voiceover practitioners.
It recalls his own experiences, spins them for more general consumption and is encouraging and positive throughout, keeping of course firm roots in the reality of the career path that is voiceover work. It's funny, it's informative, it's in-depth in all of the things it touches on, this is absolutely one of the best books on the subject that I've ever come across and I'm honored to be able to learn from Jeff yet again from this book.

Smart and enjoyable

Smart and enjoyable. I was referred to this book by one of his students and I was not disappointed at all. It's very helpful and illustrates the harder trials of breaking out without being intimidating and instead very encouraging. A terrific and recommendable read.

Understanding protest movements with ease

Thinking about getting involved in your very own protest movement? Then this is probably a book that you should consider reading. Jasper provides a thorough and comprehensive analysis of what the modern social movement entails. It is an essential read in even attempting to understand the waves of social and political protest. It is extremely well documented and the notes taken are helpful and meticulous. In his novel, he explains the inception of social movements, why people attach themselves to social movements, and why these movements will often fail and analyzes those that are successful. What I enjoy most about this book is that it puts personal experiences into a more comprehensive/ understandable context. Great for acamdemic and undergraduate students.

Thoughtful Sociology Text--or Protest Organizers' Handbook

If you're thinking of starting, or getting involved in, a contemporary protest movement, then you probably ought to read PROTEST: A CULTURAL INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL MOVEMENTS. It presents a thoughtful, complete analysis of modern social movements, and is valuable for the "dilemma" sidebars that describe the inevitable problems that accompany organized protest movements, and that must be dealt with by protest organizers.

The dilemmas are:

Janus (do you encourage a collective identity that emphasizes members' similarities, or their differences?);

Dirty hands (will you use deception or money or other suspect tactics to achieve your ends?);

Character work (will you portray your protesters as victims or heroes? will you portray your opponents as villains or clowns?);

Innovation (how far or fast will you push societal boundaries?);

Media (how will you use the media to get attention without being portrayed badly or suffering backlash?);

Organization (how will you keep rules aimed at sustaining the organization from becoming ends in themselves that will destroy your mission?);

Extension (how do you find the right size for your movement to be maximally effective?);

Naughty or nice (how do you choose between tactics that make you appear morally upright and tactics that make you appear stronger and more threatening?);

Identity (how will you manage the collective identity so that subgroups won't split off?);

Band of brothers (how will you keep face-to-face bonds from crowding out the larger group?);

Powerful allies (how can you keep politicians, etc. from twisting your movement to their own needs instead of using their power on your behalf?);

Audience segregation (if you convey different messages to different audiences, how can you avoid being seen as deceitful?); and

Articulation (how do you avoid demobilization resulting from achieving a clearly stated goal?).

PROTEST is, in essence, a textbook for a sociology course--more analytical than practical--though it also functions to some extent as a protest organizer's handbook. The reason I was interested in this book, was that I hoped it would provide some insight into local, recurring protests in Oakland, CA (e.g., Occupy Oakland, multiple ad hoc protests over police brutality in Oakland and other cities), and perhaps offer some explanations for why these protests so often result in looting and vandalism of local businesses. Unfortunately, this topic ("naughty or nice") was barely touched on, and the discussion of Occupy Oakland was extremely superficial.

As a sociology text, PROTEST probably merits 5 stars. However, it was too theoretical and "above the fray" to be of value to me. I rate PROTEST at 3 stars ("It's okay" on the official Amazon scale).

Washington, a journalist and bioethicist who has worked at Harvard Medical School and Tuskegee University, has accumulated a wealth of documentation, beginning with Thomas Jefferson exposing hundreds of slaves to an untried smallpox vaccine before using it on whites, to the 1990s, when the New York State Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University ran drug experiments on African-American and black Dominican boys to determine a genetic predisposition for "disruptive behavior." Washington is a great storyteller, and in addition to giving us an abundance of information on "scientific racism," the book, even at its most distressing, is compulsively readable. Washington, a medical journalist, offers the first and only comprehensive history of medical experimentation on and mistreatment of black Americans. Starting with the racist pseudoscience that began when whites first encountered Africans, Washington traces practices from grave robbing to public display of black albinos and the "Hottentot Venus," and theories from eugenics to social Darwinism, which have attempted to justify views of racial hierarchy and mistreatment and even enslavement of blacks. Frightening Look into the Minds of the Heartless

Harriet Washington has created an extensive investigative body of work that reveals the inhumane treatment of a people unprovenly regarded as less than by those who have proved themselves to be less than. One wonders why God would grant anyone dominion over the earth and all that dwells upon it, but Medical Apartheid indentifies those who take to heart that particular verse and chapter and illustrates how they consider no one and nothing exempt from the horrors of their demonic thinking. From surgical procedures with neither consent nor notification to the withholding of treatment for the sake of science, this book reveals the price so many African-Americans have paid in the name of medical advancement-without compensation or an acknowledgment of gratitude from the medical community.

This book should be mandatory reading for all.

Medical Apartheid: What You Never Learned in School

Medical Apartheid is a must read for anyone interested in social justice issues. While Washington's work may be the catalyst for the long awaited national apology, the researched accounts of U.S. atrocities deserve and require far more. This book should become required reading in our educational institutions regardless of one's pursued field of study. The U.S. must tell the truth about its past and those it has ceremoniously honored and attempted to destroy. Harriet Washington has done just that.

Medical Testing Gone Amuck

The opening salvo was the press reporting on the so called Tuskegee experiments, in which black syphilitic men were studied but not treated. This book gives the most complete description of the Tuskegee experiments I've seen as it makes this study the centerpiece of medical experimentation where one race was selectied out as the subjects.

From there, unfortunagely, it goes on to show that this was not an abberation but a practice that goes back to slave days. It gives the stories of experiment after experiment that were conducted the same way with predominately black subjects.

The book concentrates on experiments conducted on black Americans and goes on to describe the ongoing, perhaps everlasting suspicion that these experiments have left in the minds of black America towards the medical profession.

This is a fitting subject for a book, but while reading I was reminded of the other famous medical experimentation incidents such as the German experiments in their concentration camps or those performed by Japan's Unit 516. It seems that 'unter-people' or people viewed as some kind of sub-human are the favorites for experiments.

...then read this book. A little bit too much emphasis placed on clearing up the Page 'occult' rumors/theories, but other than that - a fun read about a great one-of-a-kind band. (I'll never understand the people that put these guys down)

CASE FILE: the facts

at first I was reluctant to buy this book - but I found it very interesting and very useful (especially since I too have been published since 1982 and am a BIG Led Zeppelin/solo members fan. The book is categorized - its not a another remake of a remade remake LZ book. There were a few little errors (like TWINKLE song listed wrong - the right title is "Terry") There are slight errors which the proofreader THE AUTHOR could have caught. Very good indeed, all thats left to know I am sure would be autobiographies by the 3 remaining band members. Another thing worth mentioning is that chapters are titled after song lyrics. clever.

If you're a Zep fan and never tire of reading about them, then get this book. Great book to just pick up whenever and flip to a page and start reading. Definitely a great buy for a Zep fan.

For those who are kindle fans, welcome!

This book contains plenty of beautiful code examples, which have been carefully prepared to look good in print. Unfortunately, I've had trouble even making them legible on the Kindle. I would rather not create an e-book that is illegible, merely to make more sales. It's difficult to make this kind of book into an excellent e-book.

For now, I suggest you get the print version and enjoy the beauty of the examples. You can even try to solve the maze on the cover.

About the Author
Kate has been programming since her family got a Commodore 64 computer when she was young. Her teaching career began shortly after when she taught her brothers the basics of programming. Kate has worked in the computer industry for decades. She's worked for Qualcomm, Amazon, AOL and Verizon, but she prefers the environment in smaller companies. As she gained experience, she realized there were things her coworkers didn't understand, and she wished they did. That is when she started writing. Her books start basic, but also include advanced concepts. Kate hopes you enjoy her book!

A distinctive approach

If you take an art class, you'll experience "crit" - the part where everyone posts their work, and where the class as a group examines each one, notes what works and what doesn't, but only after seeing many wonderful works from the world's collection of art already in existence. If you take writing classes you'll read great writing. Then other budding writers, as well as the instructor, will offer their praise and critique on your own work. But, if you take a programming class, you'll code your homework in your dark little office, and share it only as a dark little secret with your grader, never seeing another approach, let alone the brilliant classics of our field.

What's wrong with this picture? Everything, of course, but only Thompson seems to comment accurately on this inexplicable state of affairs. Yes, there are lessons to learn from history in narrative form. And, whatever the wisdom in them, even Thompson can't bring that to life as coders and compilers know it.She starts this book with page after page of very good advice.

Then, in the second half, Thompson does the unthinkable (or at least un-thought-of): she actually presents code, good and bad, in source form. There's C code, and Pascal, and the macro language that carried the Melissa virus - old now, but troublesome in its day - and a few assembly languages. (Assembly-phobic? Grow up, they're just languages. Once you've seen a few, they're not that different from each other.)

Thompson offers some thoughts I appreciate greatly - one being that Knuth's 'literate programming' deserves more than the small but wide-strewn cabal of wild-eyed aficionados that it seems to have now. (I'm among them.) She also mentions APL, a marvelous and mysterious language whose basic constructs make "Obfuscated C" look like an exemplar of clarity. (Folklore of our tribe asserts that an APL interpreter was once written in two lines of APL, but I never saw the code.) As with so many other writers, though, this discussion loses the fact that APL started as a hardware description language for specifying an IBM mainframe instruction set.

And, on a related note, this book's exhortations to unit testing never acknowledge the testbench culture that Verilog and VHDL programmers, i.e. hardware logic designers, have held dear for a quarter century that I know of - more, I'm sure. Really, even the most rabid Test-First software evangelist looks pretty slovenly compared to an ordinary logic designer. The hardware world is gradually taking on ideas from software: high-level specification, object orientation, aspect orientation, and more. It's slow, for many good reasons (and some not so good). But, on the other side, software developers seem positively disdainful of 'low level' approaches, since so many want to be seen as high-level thinkers. They make me think of children, so proud of their stick forts and sandcastles, even as their whole world lies supported on massive and mighty architecture that they can't see or imagine.

For all the good in this book's advice, I find one thing conspicuous by its absence - you'll know what that means if your tongue has ever felt around for a lost tooth. Cert-C, MISRA, and a handful of others, many related to each other, describe small and simple steps toward bullet-proofing code at the level of each line written, even before you enter the abstract world of formal verification. The most meticulous level of exactitude isn't warranted for every application. But, if you say to a programmer: "Your heart pacemaker is mostly software - how do you want it written?", you'll hear things like "MISRA" as often as you'll hear "Over my dead body - which seems likely." (Did you know that the unary negation operator, on integers, can overflow? Have you coded for that possibility?)

Thompson has written a great book for anyone with an intern or new grad in hand, a junior zoomer whose experience of writing homework assignments has in no way prepared her for industrial programming. She makes that fairly clear from the git-go. The very good advice here tops out low, though, and another level needs to be added. Having seen so many poor attempts at next steps, though, I'm really not sure what a good one might look like.

A book that every programmer should read

“Zero Bugs and Program Faster” is not your average programming book, which seem to come out every month with a new flavor.
Instead, author Kate Thompson provides us with a very insightful guide on how to program better and avoid bugs while coding. As stated in the description, the two years she spent on researching every bug avoidance technique available shows through pages. From simplifying redundancy where needed to converting programming into what can be called an art form, this book covers it all.
What I enjoyed most about the book is not only the useful tips and techniques it provides, but also how it is narrated. It is not written as hard-to-digest technical rambling like many others of this topic are, but rather presents the information with anecdotes and precise examples that make reading it much more enjoyable.
Definitely a book that every programmer should read and review every so often as a reminder that programming can actually reach the point of perfection.

A programmer’s book

This was an exceptional book. I stumbled upon this on the internet but had to find it on Amazon to do a review for it. What I loved most was the writing style, with stories and metaphors in between. You would expect that being a book about programming, it should be fraught with technicalities but the direct opposite is the case with this one.
I daresay a layman would read this and understand it well enough.

Beautiful book for all ages

I originally picked this book up for my four year old grand daughter as a book we could read together and realized how wonderful this book is. It is a great book for everyone to read young and old alike. Bonus you get extra books as well.
I think all of us at any age should go and read some of the books from our youth and maybe like Luna, The NIght Butterfly find a New book that I wish I had 50 something years ago and start a new tradition to pass forward, Beautiful book writing and pictures. Must have for all ages

a lesson about being different

Luna feels differently than the rest in her butterfly family. She comes out at night and once streaks of daylight come out, she gets tired and isn’t out with the rest of the butterflies.

She’s not sure why she’s so different. It takes a visit with a wise owl to for Luna to learn who she is and why she’s different.

Great selections!

People like Eugene Ionesco, Samuel Beckett, and Bertolt Brecht are some of the most influential modern playwrights, and this book collects some of their most important plays. Seminal works like "Rhinoceros", "Waiting for Godot", "The Caucasian Chalk Circle", and "American Buffalo" are compiled in this book. Fascinating reading!

When I bought this book it was solely for the purpose of academic study. And like all my textbooks I was planning on trading it in afterwards. But after reading these remarkable plays I plan on keeping them forever. These plays are amazing, shocking, provocative, insightful, and most of all, classic avant-garde. I will never forget these plays and I can guarantee you won't either.
