From Library Journal
Released in 1971 as Black Nationalism and the Revolution in Music, this book is essentially a compilation of articles published in Jazz Review. LJ's reviewer took exception to Kofsky's racist notions but nonetheless asserted that he wrote well (LJ 6/1/71). This would make a good companion to Kofsky's recent Black Music, White Business: Illuminating the History and Political Economy of Jazz, also from Pathfinder.

The African-Americaness of jazz
By Tony Thomas
The late Frank Kofsky was a radical historian, and a lover of Jazz. This book is based on articles he published in Jazz magazines in the middle 1960s, interviews he did with Coltrane.

Despite its weaknesses, this book is important in that it stresses the importance of the African American nature of Coltrane and modern jazz, and its links to Black militancy in the 1960s. It places Jazz not just in the historical links to aFrican American musical survivors but the Jazz of the 50s and 60s in the context of the ferment in the Black community arising from the civil rights and Black power movements.

As such, it is a good answer to the current Wynton Marsalis-Stanley Crouch-Albert Murray mafia's insistence that Jazz is not African American, but a product of 'greatness" of American capitalism and that Jazz needs to acquire the forms, conventions, and practices of European classical music.

. . And this is vital to Coltrane's importance in the advancement of Jazz completely against these conventions.
This book has weaknesses. Kofsy's analysis is distant from Marxist cultural theory, especially as he tries to identify artistic validity with political content. Kofsky seems unaware of the question of class within the African American people or among jazz musicians. Kofsky never really lets the reader know how religion and spirituality became central to John Coltrane and his music in his later years.

Still, this book is part of the defense of the place of John Coltrane in the history of Jazz, and of Jazz's own place in history.

While this book is not always available on Amazon, it is always available from BooksfromPathfinder, an Amazon Z store that you can get to by clicking on New and Used further up this page!

Well-intentioned but misdirected
By Tyler Smith
Kofsky's effort in this book is to tie the avant-garde jazz music that emerged in the sixties to the politics of black nationalism that were boiling up at the same time. His essential thesis is that jazz is an African American art form that is and always has been by its very nature a form of protest against the physical and ideological shackles placed on black people by an oppressive society. He asserts that the musical freedom that black jazz artists searched for in the '60s went hand-in-hand with the efforts of Malcolm X and others to create a new, Afrocentric society that would presumably free black people to nurture their cultural identity.
As the title suggests, Kofsky saw John Coltrane as the key figure in this movement. He is unstinting in his praise of Coltrane's music, so much so that even I, a hard-core fan of Trane's for more than 30 years, found myself yearning for a more leavened approach. Kofsky certainly knows Coltrane's music well. But he makes, in my opinion, a fatal error in investing that music with a political consciousness and aim that Coltrane himself never professed. In fact, in an interview included in the book that Kofsky conducted with the saxophonist, he (Coltrane) makes clear that he does not subscribe to Kofsky's thesis, despite the writer's repeated attempts to put words in his mouth. Some years ago, I secured a tape of this interview, and it's startling to hear how insistent Kofsky becomes in attempting to lead his subject where he clearly doesn't want to go.
Another key weakness of the book is that it gives short shrift to so many fine musicians of the period. Charles Mingus, for example, a key influence on the avant-garde, is barely mentioned. If you read the book and had never heard of Miles Davis, you'd come away thinking that he was just another planet circling the Coltrane star instead of one of the formative influences on the saxophonist himself. And of course solid and influential musicians who made incremental contributions to the music -- Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Lee Morgan, Jaki Byard, Herbie Hancock (the list could go on and on) -- receive nary a word. Meanwhile, Archie Shepp is lionized, first and foremost because of his radical politics.
Lest anyone think I'm taking a shot at Archie, I hasten to add that I think he's made a number of fine albums, and I own quite a few of them. The point is that one realizes early on that Kofsky is less interested in understanding the creative process and analyzing the relative musical merits of jazz musicians than he is in developing a social critique and applying his political litmus tests to the musicians of the era. Viewed in this light, the book is not very informative. A long critique of the "cockroach capitalism" practiced by jazz club owners 40 years ago doesn't carry much weight today. And alas, the socialist revolution that Kofsky proclaimed was imminent has somehow failed to come to pass, yet jazz has endured. Is there a lesson there?
In the end, Kofsky manages to minimize the artistry of the musicians and make them appear to be guided inexorably by Marxist ideology. That's pretty flimsy and it certainly in my mind is a disservice to the many great musicians of the '60s who could never be pinned down to one influence. In fact, their stubborn resistance to being pinned down, and to be endlessly open to new ideas, is precisely what made them jazz musicians.
For a much better insight into the life of the jazz musician, I would suggest A.B. Spellman's "Four Lives in the Bebop Business," and for a balanced analysis of Coltrane's music, Eric Nisenson's "Ascension."

This book got me listening to jazz and enjoying it
By Katy LeRougetel
Not a biography of Coltrane, this is a really interesting discourse on jazz as it evolved through the racism, civil rights movement and African liberation struggles of the times. Kofsky (the author) was a protagonist in the jazz world and although his obsession with petty quarrels among critics can get a bit wearing, the book is so grounded in the real, lived-through conflicts sodden in the overt racism of the music establishment, it is a good read. Imagine, many critics wouldn't even admit jazz was Black music - couldn't concede such a contribution from "the Negros"!
Several chapters replete with musical scores were too much for me to understand, since I don't play an instrument, but they clearly round out Kofsky's points on the structure of jazz. Learned all kinds of stuff about how the measured, symmetrical symphony compositions of Europe reflect that society's inner workings, versus the different beat of African music picked up by jazz. Instead of exploring a different take on rythm and sound, early critics hrrumphed and complained of cacophony. The chauvinism is so damn self-assured.
Also has beautiful photos, many taken by the author himself. Proof he was really there through thick and thin.

Principles of Meteorological Analysis (Dover Earth Science), by Walter J. Saucier

This highly respected meteorological classic contains an abundance of basic information that is not only still valid but is unavailable elsewhere. Walter J. Saucier, Professor of Meteorology, North Carolina State University, prepared a book geared to intermediate-level meteorology students. Geography departments will also find it useful — as will some sophisticated amateur meteorologists.
Following a review of atmospheric variables, descriptions of meteorological charts and diagrams, and a chapter on hydrostatics and static stability, the author discusses at length various types of analysis (scalar, cross-section, isobaric, isentropic, surface charts, and kinematic); considers certain aspects of broad-scale analysis and local analysis (including the tracking of small-scale weather phenomena), and provides a brief survey of analysis in the tropics.
Hundreds of detailed graphs and charts enhance a clearly worded and straightforward text — the use of which requires an elementary knowledge of climatology, observations, statics and thermodynamics, physical processes, and atmospheric motions. The volume also presumes some knowledge of differential calculus — in particular partial differentials and certain rudiments of vector algebra. A list of reading references appears after each chapter; problems and exercises are included in the early sections of the book.

Review of "Principles of Meteorological Analysis"
By Charles Doswell III
This book is a true classic publication. Its enduring value is not so much as a textbook, although I have seen it used as such. Rather, it is should be considered a primary reference work. There is no better discussion of the theory and practice of meteorological scalar analysis anywhere in the literature. Its treatment of kinematic analysis is perhaps its most unique aspect and it certainly is one of Saucier's specialties. It also has an excellent treatment of cross section analysis, as well as many other topics. About the only negative part of the book is that it was published first in 1955, so its content *is* becoming a bit dated. Nevertheless, this is one that should be in the collection of every serious meteorology student. It is challenging to read, but the value associated with its content makes the effort worthwhile.

*THE* Definitive Book for Meteorological Analysis
By Jim Johnson
This book, despite its age, continues to be the acme of scalar and kinematic analysis of meteorological fields. Not to mention many other methods of meteorological data analysis. Nothing yet exists in the literature which can serve to replace this classic. Every operational meterologist should own a copy of Saucier's book and the pages should be worn and dog-eared from frequent use!

A classic reference book
By Loves to Knit
This book is considered a classic reference book on the topic of vintage milk glass. A great addition for a collector's library. Too bad more photos aren't in color but maybe that would have made the book prohibitively expensive when it was first published.

one of the most helpful (and first) milk glass references
By N. Ferguson R.
This classic guide has lots of great photos, although (like most milk glass books) it does have some errors in identification. If you really get into milk glass you will want to check the National Milk Glass Collectors Society website for a downloaded list of corrections.

One of the very best early books on milk glass- out of print since the 1950s but usually available at low cost. Very nice large black and white photos, especially of covered animal dishes, compotes, bowls and plates. If you love the 1800s milk glass you will love this book. It also has a section on common 1950s milk glass as a final chapter.

The best milk glass book
By N. Ferguson R.
I feel this out of print volume is actually the most useful book available for those interested in 1800s milk glass. While the photos are black and white they are large and helpful.

I'm particularly interested in the Victorian covered animal dishes, and this book has a great section on them. It also covers platters, plates, compotes, candlesticks, etc. etc. etc.

RFID, PLC and WSN
By W Boudville
The book describes 3 topics - RFID, power line communications [PLC] and wireless sensor networks [WSNs]. Low level engineering details are largely omitted. But there is enough technical material to perhaps require a background of 1 or 2 years of undergraduate study in engineering or science. It's a good read, without being bogged down in myriad equations.

Of the topics, RFID and PLC are the most advanced in terms of actual mass deployment. When it comes to actual possible connections to the Internet, RFID is really not apropos. The contexts in which RFID has been deployed [and which are expected to be in the near future] are for companies that might want more inventory control. While in principle such data might then be made available on the Internet, it seems in practice that access will be restricted to within the company. PLC is certainly expected to include Internet access. Power companies are acutely interested in this. First for cheaper and easier remote monitoring of electricity usage. Second for selling Internet access to their customers, and this last mile access is very expensive for competing implementations.

The WSN is the furthest from any large commercial usage. Mostly, it has been done in various research contexts. And as. far as Internet access is concerned, this might be from the Internet to a base station that controls a WSN. But it does not extend to actually communicating with a sensor node inside that network, due to the limited power and bandwidth of such nodes. If you are interested in learning more about WSN, the publisher offers an entire recent text devoted to extensive discourse, Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks: Algorithms and Protocols for Scalable Coordination and Data Communication

The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA, by James D. Watson Ph.D.

The classic personal account of Watson and Crick’s groundbreaking discovery of the structure of DNA, now with an introduction by Sylvia Nasar, author of A Beautiful Mind.

By identifying the structure of DNA, the molecule of life, Francis Crick and James Watson revolutionized biochemistry and won themselves a Nobel Prize. At the time, Watson was only twenty-four, a young scientist hungry to make his mark. His uncompromisingly honest account of the heady days of their thrilling sprint against other world-class researchers to solve one of science’s greatest mysteries gives a dazzlingly clear picture of a world of brilliant scientists with great gifts, very human ambitions, and bitter rivalries.

With humility unspoiled by false modesty, Watson relates his and Crick’s desperate efforts to beat Linus Pauling to the Holy Grail of life sciences, the identification of the basic building block of life. Never has a scientist been so truthful in capturing in words the flavor of his work.

Amazon.com Review
"Science seldom proceeds in the straightforward logical manner imagined by outsiders," writes James Watson in The Double Helix, his account of his codiscovery (along with Francis Crick) of the structure of DNA. Watson and Crick won Nobel Prizes for their work, and their names are memorized by biology students around the world. But as in all of history, the real story behind the deceptively simple outcome was messy, intense, and sometimes truly hilarious. To preserve the "real" story for the world, James Watson attempted to record his first impressions as soon after the events of 1951-1953 as possible, with all their unpleasant realities and "spirit of adventure" intact.

Watson holds nothing back when revealing the petty sniping and backbiting among his colleagues, while acknowledging that he himself was a willing participant in the melodrama. In particular, Watson reveals his mixed feelings about his famous colleague in discovery, Francis Crick, who many thought of as an arrogant man who talked too much, and whose brilliance was appreciated by few. This is the joy of The Double Helix--instead of a chronicle of stainless-steel heroes toiling away in their sparkling labs, Watson's chronicle gives readers an idea of what living science is like, warts and all. The Double Helix is a startling window into the scientific method, full of insight and wit, and packed with the kind of science anecdotes that are told and retold in the halls of universities and laboratories everywhere. It's the stuff of legends. --Therese Littleton

A cheeky, thrilling memoir of the discovery of DNA's structure
By Arun Goud
I decided to give this book a try after watching the short, well-acted BBC Horizon documentary "Life Story" which is based on this book with Jeff Goldblum (Dr. Ian Malcolm of Jurassic Park) playing the role of James D. Watson. The names of James Watson and Francis Crick have been forever immortalized in high school biology textbooks for their principal role in the 1953 discovery of the molecular structure of the DNA with the names of Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin being only mentioned in passing. They make it seem as if everything was smooth sailing during this discovery. "Honest Jim" puts any such misgivings on the part of the reader to complete rest by giving a brutally candid and perhaps even one-sided recounting of the events that led to the fateful 1953 discovery.

This 226 page book, first published in 1968, has gained much notoriety and rightly so for some of the statements made by the author would seem bold, innopportune and outright outrageous.

There are a lot of personalities involved and like another reviewer I'll list the most important ones and their situation in 1951

1. James Watson - A 23 year old recently-graduated molecular biologist and geneticist from Indiana University who goes to Copenhagen University as a postdoctoral fellow in 1950 at the behest of his supervisor Salvador Luria and collaborator Max Delbruck in order to learn nucleic-acid chemistry necessary for tackling DNA's structure. A year later, after hearing about X ray crystallography (XRC) from Maurice Wilkins of King's College, London, he switches to Cavendish Lab at Cambridge University to work in Max Perutz's lab with the hope of getting to learn XRC.

2. Maurice Wilkins - Of King's College, London. A Physicist turned Biologist who uses XRC to generate photographs of DNA.

3. Francis Crick - A 35 year old, loud mouthed PhD student of Max Perutz at Cavendish lab who becomes Watson's close colleague and collaborator. He makes his ambitious wish clearly known to all - to discover DNA's structure and beat the American chemist Linus Pauling at his own game. The only problem preventing him from pursuing this along with his dissertation work is that it's unethical to hijack someone else's project within England - in this case, Maurice Wilkins's in nearby King's College. Once he teams up with J.D. Watson, all concerns for ethics go down the drain.

4. Linus Pauling - The famous Caltech, Pasadena based Chemist who is fresh out of his triumph of deciphering correctly the alpha-helix structure of proteins and is on an all out mission to decode the structure of the DNA. He is more hands-on and prefers to deduce molecular structure by building trial-and-error toy models of biomolecules that satisfy experimentally measured data instead of resorting to purely XRC based approach.

5. William Lawrence Bragg - The son in the father-son duo of W.H.Bragg-W.L.Bragg who developed the technique of X-ray crystallography for probing crystal structures and after whom the Bragg's law is named. He is the director of Cavendish lab and is particularly interested in having the DNA structure figured out at Cambridge before any outsider beats them to it.

6. Rosalind Franklin - The most tragic character in this tale of intrigue. She's been hired to assist Maurice Wilkins on the DNA project and XRC is her specialization. Believes in systematically deducing DNA's structure purely from XRC instead of playing with toy models. Has a sour working relationship with Maurice Wilkins and prefers to carry out her task independently. Maurice frequently complains about her to Watson and Crick who on their part try to pump him for XRC photographs generated by Rosalind.

The whole book is a very quick read with some pages containing photographs of the people mentioned and some of the handwritten technical letters that JDW wrote back to Max Delbruck. The 2012 special annotated edition of this book has a lot more illustrations. Even though this book is aimed at a general audience there are a lot of terminologies (such as sugar-phosphate backbone, nucleotides, tautomers, etc) which are not clearly explained and may require the reader to frequently look up Wikipedia.

As for my views on how the events unfolded, I consider it a tragic irony that the structure of the DNA was ultimately decoded not by the experienced and righteous Linus Pauling but instead by two youthful, relatively unknown braggarts at Cavendish Lab that were trying to imitate Pauling's model-building tactics. Also JDW's occasional gibes at Rosalind Franklin (or "Rosy" as he called her mockingly) seem annoying and though he does try to patch up his professional relationship with her by giving her full credit for generating the excellent XRC photographs, it feels half-hearted and too late. The what-if question remains that she might have perhaps beaten them all to the solution only if she and Maurice had been aware that JDW and FC were closing in on the answer. But then again she might have also suffered the same fate as Lise Meitner and Jocelyn Bell did. Perhaps her own memoir on the events that transpired might have thrown light on what was happening at that time. All this is left for the reader to speculate upon.

My only complaint about this book is that it ends in a very anti-climactic fashion. After leading the reader through the neck and neck race that went on, JDW finishes the memoir in a mundane fashion. All along he makes it very clear that glory is all he cares about. To each his/her own, I suppose. After all not everyone can be like Grigori Perelman. What JDW manages to successfully capture in this book and convey to the readers are - the sense of urgency that prevailed at that time among DNA researchers, the styles and techniques adopted to infer molecular structure and the ultimate thrill of discovery. For this sake alone, this book deserves to be read. (And also because it features on Library of Congress' "Books that Shaped America" list)

Lastly, here are some excerpts that will demonstrate why this book is considered scandalous
1. The opening line of Chapter 1 begins memorably as such - "I have never seen Francis Crick in a modest mood." One can only imagine what FC's first reaction could have been when he read that line.

2. On the sticky "Why-only-me?" situation that Maurice Wilkins found himself in - "All this was most unsettling to Maurice. He had not escaped into biology only to find it personally as objectionable as physics, with its atomic consequences. The combination of both Linus and Francis breathing down his neck often made it very difficult to sleep. But at least Pauling was 6000 miles away and even Francis was separated by a 2 hour rail journey. The real problem, then, was Rosy. The thought could not be avoided that the best home for a feminist was in another person's lab."

3. On W.L.Bragg - "For too long he had lived under the shadow of his famous father, with most people falsely thinking that his father, not he, was responsible for the sharp insight behind Bragg's law." This is awkward considering that the foreword to this book was written by W.L.Bragg and on his part W.L.Bragg states gracefully "Those who figure in this book must read it in a very forgiving spirit."

All in all a good read, though not the spectacular one I thought it would be.
By Martin van Creveld
Recently I was asked to do a short paper on military innovation for a conference to be held in South Korea. Having read somewhere that this is the best book on how scientific discoveries are made, I bought it and read it from cover to cover. Even though much of the science is above my head. Much of the book is devoted to backbiting aimed at Prof. Watson's associates. Including the most important one among them, Francis Crick. In other ways, though, it provides a vivid picture of the politics, intrigues, frustrations, and joys of doing research. I also found the descriptions of grantmanship and life at Cambridge, England, during the early 1950s interesting.

All in all a good read, though not the spectacular one I thought it would be.

A Great Book!
By laurenjayne
The Double Helix, A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA, is a great book, which I would highly recommend. Written by James D. Watson, it is a novel about the adventures and struggles James Watson and Francis Crick went through to finally discover the double helix structure. The book is very well written and you can never put the book down. The subject is so informative and interesting that you can't help but keep flipping through the pages. This was such an amazing discovery, which makes the book that much better to read. Watson is great at thoroughly explaining the challenges they went through. They fail many times, like all scientists sometimes do, but it all paid off in the end. He tells the story very well, and explains the different encounters he had with many different scientists. He talks about his times working with Crick in the Cavendish laboratory, and what they went through to finally discover DNA. Watson writes a lot about the scientific part of his discovery, but also writes about the adventures and vacations he went on, which make the story that much more interesting. The novel also has pictures in it, which I love. They help me follow the plot of the story, and help me form an image in my head of what he is talking about. Some of the images are also diagrams that are labeled to help you understand the scientific part of the book. I would recommend this novel to anyone, even if you are not interested in science or DNA very much. The book is well written and gives a great story of how one of the best discoveries of all time was made.

The Hanging of Angelique: The Untold Story of Canadian Slavery and the Burning of Old Montreal (Race in the Atlantic World, 1700-1900)By

During the night of April 10, 1734, Montral burned. Marie-Joseph Anglique, a twenty-nine-year-old slave, was arrested, tried, and found guilty of starting the blaze that consumed forty-six buildings. Suspecting that she had not acted alone and angered that she had maintained her innocence, Anglique's condemners tortured her after the trial. She confessed but named no accomplices. Before Anglique was hanged, she was paraded through the city. Afterward, her corpse was burned. Anglique, who had been born in Portugal, faded into the shadows of Canadian history, vaguely remembered as the alleged arsonist behind an early catastrophic fire.

The result of fifteen years of research, The Hanging of Anglique vividly tells the story of this strong-willed woman. Afua Cooper draws on extensive trial records that offer, in Anglique's own words, a detailed portrait of her life and a sense of what slavery was like in Canada at the time. Predating other first-person accounts by more than forty years, these records constitute what is arguably the oldest slave narrative in the New World.

Cooper sheds new light on the largely misunderstood or ignored history of slavery in Canada. She refutes the myth that Canada was a haven at the end of the Underground Railroad. Cooper also provides a context for Canada in the larger picture of transatlantic slavery while re-creating the tragic life of one woman who refused to accept bondage.

Review

Cooper connects Anglique’s fate with the wide world of Atlantic, American, and Canadian slavery, and with the intimate world of the household where Anglique worked. An enthralling and important tale.

(Natalie Zemon Davis author of The Return of Martin Guerre)

As rigorous scholarly research, Cooper examines trial transcripts, private letters, and other New World correspondence to produce an academic coup. Her book offers a new perspective on Canadian slavery, altering the image of ourselves as benign: 'Slavery was as Canadian as it was American or West Indian.' As a dramatic re-telling of one slave woman's life of oppression, The Hanging of Anglique reaffirms and extends the feminist slogan that the personal is political. . . . [Told] in the decisive language of an historian and with a sense of urgency befitting a poet.

(Montreal Review of Books)

[Cooper] convincingly demonstrates that one woman's story can represent larger global forces. The account of Anglique's trial is an important source for Canadian history and the history of the African diaspora.

(Toronto Globe and Mail)

An evocative, thought-provoking and profoundly accessible work . . . [the] story leads onto the vista of Canada's participation in a huge, often chaotic Atlantic world order and a wider story of African migrations and diaspora.

(Calgary Herald)

Cooper is to be congratulated for long, careful and thoroughly engaged research and passionate, engaging writing.

(Michel Basilieres author of Black Bird)

The most important piece of Canadian history written in decades, Afua Cooper's The Hanging of Angelique shakes the earth beneath the Canadian nation story. Thorough, original, and masterful, this book is s stunning reclamation of one woman's life, but it is also a reclamation of Africans in early North American history. Trenchant and engagingly written, this book is brilliant.

(Dionne Brand author of What We All Long For)

[Cooper] presents us with an enormous range of scholarly research and heartfelt interpretation to explain, contextualize and condemn the slave-owning society of New France, the New World, and Europe. . . . This book is essential. It has the scope of a great historical novel, traversing oceans and cultures, full of sex, romance, betrayal, escapes, sufferings, crimes and tragedies. Cooper's passionate voice punches through dry detail with evident outrage. . . . The Hanging of Anglique really is an important and original work.

(Michel Basilieres Toronto Star)

Cooper's passionate style reflects her commitment to shake Canadians from their complacency about their past.

(Winnipeg Free Press)

SHE HAS ARISEN
By Paula C. Aird
A case had been built against Marie-Joseph Angelique based on innuendo, insinuation, hearsay and Angelique's bad reputation.Under severe torture, the 29-year-old woman, who previously proclaimed her innocence admitted to setting fire to the home of her owner. This fire consumed 46 buildings in Old Montreal. After the grisly execution Angelique's corpse was left hanging for two hours for all to see, then was burnt. That should have been the end of Angelique but 270 years later she has arisen. Thanks to Afua Cooper.
In fact through her thorough research Ms Cooper delves into much of the historical occurences of the time. She puts to rest that myth that there was no slavery in Canada. She opens wide the doors of an unjust justice system.
This is not just Black history but Canadian - even world history. It should be required reading for all students of history.

this is not a book of history. it is a book of historical speculation wherein cooper indulges her racist and disturbing "post colonial" fantasies of white murder through her main character

- she claims canada is racist because there is no statue of angelique in the very city, montreal, which she burnt to the ground. angelique was a terrorists, who destroyed the only church and hospital in the city and the homes of thousands of innocent hard working people, and cooper wants her to have a statue?

- she claims the canadian judicial system was biased against angelique, even though she agrees, ultimately, that angelique is guilty. cooper wants to have it both ways: she wants to paint angelique as the victim of a criminal injustice AND as a proactive and willing agent who struck a blow for all oppressed people with her defiant and violent revolutionary act. she wants angelique to be a blameless heroine, to better serve her agenda that all slave narratives are inherently about courageous blacks fighting injustice, when really this is about a cowerdly liar who committed a sin just as bad as slavery. in order to justify her crime, cooper speculates about how hard life was for angelique (though all evidence points to the contrary)

- she also wants to paint HER angelique as an independent minded women who was beholded to none, and yet angelique was, ironically, completely dependent on a white man (her lover) for her escape and its planning, and who cowardly lied about the crime she committed.

- she claims angelique's lover cowardly "betrayed and abandoned her" when she was arrested for burning the town and faced execution himself (ie whitey got scarred and ran away). but what was he supposed to do? if the roles were reversed she would easily have justified angelique's "betrayal"

- she claims canadian historians who see the tragedy of angelique as a love story (she burnt the city to flee canada with white lover) as racist and sexist for not crediting angelique with cooper's biased and preferred narrative of revenge against an evil society (even though angelique never ran away and started playing with fire until she met her white lover, and there is no evidence montreal was an "evil white society" - quite the contrary, actually)

- she details the atlantic slave trade but make NO mention of the complicity of africans themselves in said trade. the one sentence mentioning the complicity of africa is dismissed because "all whites hold institutional power over all blacks" (the kind of unsophisticated nonsense you get from an undergraduate course on colonialism)

- she borders on antisemitism by going out of her way to exaggerate the role that jews played in the slave trade, while making NO mention of the role of muslims in the trade (she has only good things to say about islam in this book, as she is herself a muslim, and has nothing good to say about judaism or christianity, the latter of which she sees as nothing but a tool of oppression (islam still has slavery, christianity and christians abolished it)

- she borders on french racism, calling all french canadians dirty and filthy. she seems to revel in passages by anelique and her lover about how much they despise the french and want to murder them

- her worst sin in this book is of consistently accusing angelique's montreal master of raping her though there is NO evidence for this at all. this is absolutely unacceptable for a professional historian to do. it is often couched in "did he rape her? we dont know, so we'll have to assume he did. i mean, white people raped slaves all the time so why not this guy?". unbelievable. she repeats this over and over in her book hoping if she repeats this PURE SPECULATION enough people will believe this man, who angelique says treated her well, raped her

- this book is riddled with speculation and contains NO original research. and yet she claims anglique has been ignored by canadian history, which is written by racist whites, while ALL of her info is culled from secondary canadian sources. and what research the book contains is scant - she basically quotes from ONE book, by trudel (who, by the way, she accuses of being racist and sexist and yet thanks in the afterword for his kind help.)

- she paints a very misleading picture of slavery in canada. she says slavery was in canada for FOUR centuries and yet later in the book she says the first slave came to canada in 1691 and later says that slavery was completely abolished in canada in 1837. you do the math.

- she says slavery was every where in canada, that it was systemic, and yet she NEVER gives us the actual number of slaves in canada (it was about 1300 in total, ever). in her footnotes she mentions censuses done that counted the slaves BUT NEVER tells us how many. why? because she knows that her whole book is based on her own lie - the slavery was everywhere in canada, when in reality it was very, very small and much, much different that in the US and latin/south america.

- she says artisans owned slaves, yet never once give the name of a single artisan who owned a slave. the only canadian slaveholders we are told of in this book are all part of the french aristocracy (who all left canada for france after british conquest). a few very wealthy merchants are mentioned (though they treat their one slave just like their other indentured servants), but they were also part of the elite. she claims slavery was not the monopoly of the elite, yet gives ONLY examples of elites (maybe 15 slave owners in all are mentioned in her book, out of a population of tens of thousands)

- she makes NO differentiation between the slavery in canada and slavery in the south; she says all slavery is equally bad. YET, consider that angelique was allowed to run away several times without ever being punished and she was allowed to carry on multiple love affairs with white men in the open. she would have been killed or worse if she was in the southern states or jamaica. the slavery in canada was very mild compared to the slavery in the south. slaves were baptized and thus considered fully human, had access to the courts (could sue for their freedom), could give testimony in court, etc - all rights no one in the US had. and angelique had her sentence, for BURNING AN ENTIRE CITY FULL OF HARD WORKING BORDERLINE POOR PEOPLE reduced from having her hand cut off and being burned at the stake to hanging only. this seems like charitable restraint

- cooper wants to paint canada as just as racist as the south of the US but her own facts, or lack thereof, do not support her own racist assumptions.

- she paints all whites as the same (inherently racist) and all blacks the same (consider her SPECUALATION about angelique's black hangman - "was he thinking how evil white people are for making him kill one of his own? probably")

- fact is that the lives of slaves in canada were no different than indentured servants. life was hard and undignified for over 95% of all people in the 17th and 18th century. yet she wants to make angelique a myrter because she was a cook and a maid, who had other cooks and maids helping her.

this book is what is wrong with the post-colonial, identity theory cultural relativism that is sullying the discipline of history. do facts no longer matter?

and let me add that for a "spoken word artist" (whatever that is), this book is poorly written. there is so much repetition and filler in this book, which at 300 pages could easily have come in at 85 without losing anything.

The killer is back in New York after visiting Cape Town and Berlin, and the bodies are piling up.

Four and a half stars for this fast-moving near-future procedural with sex and adventure
By David Brukman
I enjoyed this a lot. My favorite remains Thaumatology 101, but this series is fun. I didn't care for the distracting viewpoint shifts, but on the whole Fox herself is the viewpoint character, and she is a lot of fun. Former army, former police, she is very competent while remaining vulnerable. Most of supporting characters are fun, but the prize goes to Kit, Fox's AI assistance who is appealingly like a teenager.

Just Not Sure About Fox!
By lightcruiser
Read all 3 books in the series so far and I’m still not sure if I care about the main character. Understand the action is at a minimum in the story, nice supporting characters, some romance but the reader never really understands the partner, he or she is just a secondary character added to the story. The author did break up the story nicely with the trip home, but as soon as she got back the book got bogged down in information overload. Definitely disappointed with the way the main character acted in certain areas of the book.

Ultimately, if you’re looking for a book with minimum action, tons of technological information to the point the reader zones out and relationships that mean minimal to the story, this is your book. I’ll read book 4 since I’m a fan of his Thaumatology and Aneka series, but my feeling is that I’ll drop out at that point and let the avid fans carry the series.

PS. Not sure where “plenty of action” comes into play. Few pages at the beginning and end? That leads for a whole lot of information in between.

Excellent 3rd book in this series.
By Takkom
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series of books from Niall, Fox is a carefully crafted character that it easy to like, This particular story at its base was about some unsolved murders that the cops never linked but her AI did, then the story takes a twist about her family and what her mother and father have been up-to and then another rescue of sorts no spoilers from me. Just download it or buy it read it and enjoy. I really would thank Niall for taking Fox back to being bi with a male preference instead of the totally gay relationship he started her out in last book. That just did not work for her character but now things are back to normal. Looking forward to the next in this series.

Chiron: The New Planet in Your Horoscope. The Key to Your Quest
By Constant Rearder
This is the first book I've found on Chiron and it's place in the horoscope. As such it is well worth being read, if one is curious as to how this new planet actually fits into the astrology of old. I approached the book with strong curiosity, and was informed and enlightend.

There are weaknesses one might expect from a first book, the first explanation of a new set of facts and identifications.

The general ephemeris loosely identifies where Chiron was--but does not go date by date, but rather it is year by year. This renders many of the identifications in the book useless and increases curiosity about this subject. Later studies after more time and study have been made, this weakness may be removed in later books.

However, as the only book on Chiron it is a important addition to anyone's interest in astrology. Further study and more time may be necessary to be able to become more specific in identifying each person's relationship to the planet. As we are now, this is an important and wonderful book worth reading.

Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription-7th Edition With Online Video, by Vivian Heyward, Ann Gibson

Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Seventh Edition With Online Video, provides a comprehensive approach to physical fitness appraisal and exercise prescription. The text bridges the gap between research and practice and synthesizes concepts and theories from exercise physiology, kinesiology, measurement, psychology, and nutrition to provide a clearly defined approach to physical fitness testing and the design of individualized exercise programs. The accompanying online videos enhance the learning experience and teach the techniques necessary for conducting fitness testing and program design. More than 40 clips featuring common exercise assessments will help users learn essentials of fitness testing, such as calibration of blood pressure cuffs, functional movement assessment, and push-up and pull-up testing.

Unlike introductory texts, which typically focus on field testing for evaluating physical fitness, this text includes both field and laboratory assessment techniques. Readers will find the latest information on maximal and submaximal graded exercise testing in healthy populations, muscular fitness testing protocols and norms for children and adults, and field tests and norms for evaluating cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular fitness, body composition, flexibility, and balance.

The seventh edition of Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription reflects current guidelines and recommendations, including new physical activity recommendations from the U.S. government, American Heart Association, and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), as well as the latest ACSM guidelines for medical exam and exercise testing requirements before beginning exercise programs. Additional updates to the seventh edition include the following:

• New research substantiating the link between physical activity and disease risk

• Expanded information on prediabetes, metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis, and overweight and obesity, including updated statistics on the global prevalence of obesity

• New dietary guidelines for Americans, including information on MyPlate

• Inclusion of SCORE system to estimate 10-year risk of fatal cardiac event due to atherosclerosis

• Expanded information on the use of technology to monitor physical activity

• Updated information on the use of exergaming and social networking to promote physical activity and exercise

• Additional OMNI pictorial scales for ratings of perceived exertion during exercise

• Latest ACSM FITT-VP principle for designing aerobic exercise programs

• Whole-body vibration as an adjunct to resistance training and flexibility training

Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Seventh Edition, is organized around physical fitness components, providing information on assessment followed by guidelines for designing exercise programs to improve each fitness component. The text begins with an overview of physical activity, health, and chronic disease, followed by discussion of preliminary health screening and risk classification, including the principles of fitness assessment, exercise prescription, and exercise program design. The remainder of the text provides in-depth coverage of assessment and exercise prescription for each of five physical fitness components: cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular fitness (strength, endurance, and power), body composition, flexibility, and balance.

In each chapter, key questions help readers focus on essential information. Key points, review questions, and key terms reinforce concepts and summarize chapter content. An instructor guide, test package, chapter quizzes, and presentation package plus image bank provide tools for lecture preparation, creative content delivery, and class assessment. New to the seventh edition are online video clips for both students and instructors to further aid comprehension of the text and provide an additional tool for classroom demonstration.

By integrating the latest research, recommendations, and information into guidelines for application, Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Seventh Edition, bridges the gap between research and practice for fitness professionals. Its unique scope, depth of coverage, and clearly outlined approach make it a valuable resource for students and exercise science professionals who want to increase their knowledge, skill, and competence in assessing clients’ fitness and designing individualized exercise programs.

Excellent text as was the earlier edition. I am bemused that this book has received one and two star reviews ..

Beginning with an overview of the importance of physical activity for health (and the prevention /maintenance of chronic medical conditions), this book proceeds through the continuum of exercise prescription from preliminary health screening to designing programs for the individual components of health-fitness.

The book is methodical without ever becoming tedious, and contains information based on the latest scientific research. Although labelled "Advanced", in my opinion it would be suited to both 'thinking' undergraduate and post-graduate study, or as I use it - an excellent reference source.

I have not accessed the online videos so I cannot comment on them but the book alone has been a worthwhile purchase and I typically refer to something in it at leas weekly and frequently more often.

PS this is my "go-to" reference for general exercise prescription (aerobic, resistance, flexibility etc). If you are looking for something more specific to resistance training, I'd suggest the Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning - 3rd Edition (I have both).

The book is okay, but there are no page numbers. This makes it very difficult in class to find the page the teacher is on. If there is something I'm missing here, please let me know. If this is just how it is, I will be returning the e-book. It gets three stars due to the inability to use this in an educational setting.
