Spectacular Book for All Ages
By Candace ~ Book Addict Haven
Yesterday, I took a road trip with my two daughters to get pick up my 88 year-old grandmother, who will be staying with us through the holiday season. At 5 and 9 years-old, my usual audiobook choices were clearly not an option. So, I found myself listening to some books that definitely are not my usual type, yet again.

With over 4 1/2 hours in the car each way, we were able to finish 2 audiobooks from start to finish. By pure coincidence, they both ended up being authored by Lois Lowry. I have never been more engaged in a children's book than I was during this road trip. I was completely lost in these stories, as were my children.

The first book that we listened to was 'The Giver'. What a captivating, albeit bleak, fictional world Ms. Lowry has created! I was absolutely spellbound by her storytelling.

Set in the future, Jonas lives in a community that has traded their humanity for the illusion of safety. They block anything that would trigger the emotional highs and lows that define a person's life as we now know it. They don't experience the heartache of loss, but they never give in to the joys of life either. They are shells, robotic in their day to day existence and devoid of emotion.

Although this is a children's book, it had a feeling eerily similar to George Orwell's '1984'. Independent thinking was non-existent. People "confessed" their thoughts, dreams and rule violations. The presence of the omnipresent leaders in their homes, ruling their lives, was pervasive and all-powerful.

Jonas is getting ready to experience the ceremony of 12. This particular ceremony is an important one in the community, a rite of passage into adulthood. It is at this ceremony that each child is assigned their job within the community. They will remain in their assigned role until they are no longer productive and they are "released".

Unlike the other children, Jonas is unsure of his calling within the community. He doesn't feel a clear draw to one occupation or another. He is worried of what the future holds for him and he is beginning to notice some unusual things that others do not.

Jonas is ultimately assigned a very prestigious role within the community. It is perhaps the most important role in the community, but comes with a tremendous burden. He cannot share his experiences with anyone other than the man that he will be replacing, the current "receiver". As his training progresses, Jonas comes to question everything that he has ever been taught.

From beginning to end, this book held my rapt attention. It was beautifully written and thought provoking. 'The Giver' serves as a cautionary tale to the human race, warning of what can become when we censor our very emotions and blot out all of the differences that make us unique individuals.

There was plenty of action and suspense along the way. It was also a much more emotional read than I had anticipated. I'll never forget the look on my 9 year-old's face when some of the true meanings of different phrases, like "released", truly sunk in. Don't even get me going on baby Gabe! Luckily, I think most of that went over the head of my 5 year-old.

Overall, I thought that this was a spectacular book! It is one that I would not have normally read, but I'm so glad that I did. I can only hope that the lessons learned will resonate with my daughter and the other children that read it. An all-around great story! I'll probably download the next books in the series for our next road-trip to take "Nana" home after the holidays.

"I have great honor. So will you. But you will find that is not the same as power."
By EA Solinas
Dystopian teen fiction is pretty hot right now, with blockbusters like "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent." But the grandaddy of them all was "The Giver."

And long before it became chic, Lois Lowry produced a hauntingly memorable quartet of stories set in a world where emotions are suppressed and people with gifts are imprisoned. The four books are loosely tied together -- the first and last most tightly -- and mingle fantasy and science fiction, with haunting prose and some very strong characters, as well as a message of compassion and acceptance.

In "The Giver," Jonas lives in a rigid, joyless community where people use emotion-deprivation pills and adhere to insanely strict rules -- they have no conflict, poverty or discrimination... but they also have no love, no fun, and no creativity. When Jonas is selected as the Receiver of Memories, he is suddenly flooded with feelings and memories of both the good and the bad from humanity's distant past.

And as he comes to realize what his people have lost in their quest to be the same, Jonas begins yearning for the world he knows must exist outside the Community. But his quest becomes a more personal one when he discovers another price for the Community's existence: the "release" of babies that they don't deem good enough. The only one who can change the Community is Gabe.

"Gathering Blue" introduces us to Kira, a young girl born with a deformed leg in another community that leaves disabled or sickly people to die in the Field of Leaving. She is only kept alive because of her skill with embroidery and weaving, so she can make the Singer's robe. As she comes to realize the horrible flaws in her village's way of life, Kira must make an important decision -- stay and try to improve things, or leave for a place that would welcome her?

"Messenger" was somewhat controversial upon its release, since some fans of "The Giver" felt that it "ruined" the bleak ending they had imagined for the first book. In takes place in Village, a community made up of outcasts, misfits and disabled people, ruled by the kindly Leader. But the Village is surrounded by Forest, a terrifying and deadly forest that kills those who venture into it -- and though the awkward teen boy Matty has been able to go there, it is now growing darker and twisted. As the Village begins to close itself off from the outside world, Matty finds that he may be the only one who can save them all.

"Son" takes us back in time to Claire, a young woman whose entire purpose is to produce babies for the Community -- and her child is the sickly baby boy known as Gabe, who vanishes with Jonas into the great unknown. Her desperation to find her son inspires her on a years-long quest to find him -- and a Faustian pact with a terrible figure who only wants suffering.

Pretty much all young-adult dystopian fiction owes a debt to the Giver Quartet -- it has young people discovering the cruelty and callousness of their societies, and finding different ways to rebel. But Lowry doesn't shy away from asking the serious questions in her story, such as lack of respect for life (if it's inconvenient or doesn't fit in), kindness, compassion, and the good AND bad roots of what it means to truly live.

Lowry's writing is simple but poetic, winding through with some quietly eloquent language ("Now, on this shattered morning, he felt nothing but knots and snarls under his fingertips"). And she fills the stories not with bombast and battle, but with tragedy and quiet triumph -- and while the story is in a future world fragmented into multiple civilizations, there's a hint of the fantastical as well. Think special powers, the mysterious Trademaster, and whatnot.

And she creates a varied collection of characters. All of them are tied together into a story that culminates in "Son," and they all have the theme of seeking to improve the cruel, callous worlds they were in -- Jonas by leaving the Community to the memories they are trying to avoid, Kira by staying and working, and Matty through self-sacrifice. Claire is the odd duck out, a young woman adrift in the world, desperate to find her baby.

"The Giver Quartet" is a haunting memorable collection of novels, some of which inspired the current widespread dystopian novels. Rich, haunting and well-written.

Great Quality

For the price I was expecting a soft cover set of books. However, they are all extremely nice and hardcover bound, good color, and shrink wrapped in plastic. I was glad I could get the entire set in hard cover for such a great price!

Saxony in German History: Culture, Society, and Politics, 1830-1933 (Social History, Popular Culture, and Politics in Germany)From Unive

During the hundred years examined in this volume, ordinary Germans discovered a new and powerful attachment to the nation. But throughout this period, national loyalties competed with preexisting loyalties to the locality and the region. The resulting tension made it difficult for Germans to assign clear priorities to one kind of symbolic attachment over another.
Focusing on the east German state of Saxony, the contributors to this volume refuse easy resolution of that tension, seeking instead to illustrate how local, regional, and national cultures commingled, diverged, and influenced each other over time. By considering both the erosion and the persistence of traditional identities and regional boundaries, these essays help to restore an appreciation of regional "ways of seeing," suggesting they really did matter--in their own right, and for the nation as a whole.
Topics considered include the expansion of a German reading public, Jewish emancipation, the formation of socio-moral milieus, working-class leisure, the expansion of the public sphere, the rise of consumer co-operatives, gendered attempts to fashion the "new" liberal man, and degradation rituals in the 1920s. Presenting to English-reading audiences the fruits of cutting-edge research conducted in Saxon archives since 1989, the contributors offer innovative ways to reassess the larger sweep of German history.
This book serves as a how-to guide for the study of any region in history. Beyond its primary appeal to European historians, it will also speak to students and scholars in comparative politics and sociology.

Amazon.com Review
Dave Eggers is a terrifically talented writer; don't hold his cleverness against him. What to make of a book called A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius: Based on a True Story? For starters, there's a good bit of staggering genius before you even get to the true story, including a preface, a list of "Rules and Suggestions for Enjoyment of This Book," and a 20-page acknowledgements section complete with special mail-in offer, flow chart of the book's themes, and a lovely pen-and-ink drawing of a stapler (helpfully labeled "Here is a drawing of a stapler:").

But on to the true story. At the age of 22, Eggers became both an orphan and a "single mother" when his parents died within five months of one another of unrelated cancers. In the ensuing sibling division of labor, Dave is appointed unofficial guardian of his 8-year-old brother, Christopher. The two live together in semi-squalor, decaying food and sports equipment scattered about, while Eggers worries obsessively about child-welfare authorities, molesting babysitters, and his own health. His child-rearing strategy swings between making his brother's upbringing manically fun and performing bizarre developmental experiments on him. (Case in point: his idea of suitable bedtime reading is John Hersey's Hiroshima.)

The book is also, perhaps less successfully, about being young and hip and out to conquer the world (in an ironic, media-savvy, Gen-X way, naturally). In the early '90s, Eggers was one of the founders of the very funny Might Magazine, and he spends a fair amount of time here on Might, the hipster culture of San Francisco's South Park, and his own efforts to get on to MTV's Real World. This sort of thing doesn't age very well--but then, Eggers knows that. There's no criticism you can come up with that he hasn't put into A.H.W.O.S.G. already. "The book thereafter is kind of uneven," he tells us regarding the contents after page 109, and while that's true, it's still uneven in a way that is funny and heartfelt and interesting.

All this self-consciousness could have become unbearably arch. It's a testament to Eggers's skill as a writer--and to the heartbreaking particulars of his story--that it doesn't. Currently the editor of the footnote-and-marginalia-intensive journal McSweeney's (the last issue featured an entire story by David Foster Wallace printed tinily on its spine), Eggers comes from the most media-saturated generation in history--so much so that he can't feel an emotion without the sense that it's already been felt for him. What may seem like postmodern noodling is really just Eggers writing about pain in the only honest way available to him. Oddly enough, the effect is one of complete sincerity, and--especially in its concluding pages--this memoir as metafiction is affecting beyond all rational explanation. --Mary Park

From Publishers Weekly
Literary self-consciousness and technical invention mix unexpectedly in this engaging memoir by Eggers, editor of the literary magazine McSweeney's and the creator of a satiric 'zine called Might, who subverts the conventions of the memoir by questioning his memory, motivations and interpretations so thoroughly that the form itself becomes comic. Despite the layers of ironic hesitation, the reader soon discerns that the emotions informing the book are raw and, more importantly, authentic. After presenting a self-effacing set of "Rules and Suggestions for the Enjoyment of this Book" ("Actually, you might want to skip much of the middle, namely pages 209-301") and an extended, hilarious set of acknowledgments (which include an itemized account of his gross and net book advance), Eggers describes his parents' horrific deaths from cancer within a few weeks of each other during his senior year of college, and his decision to move with his eight year-old brother, Toph, from the suburbs of Chicago to Berkeley, near where his sister, Beth, lives. In California, he manages to care for Toph, work at various jobs, found Might, and even take a star turn on MTV's The Real World. While his is an amazing story, Eggers, now 29, mainly focuses on the ethics of the memoir and of his behavior--his desire to be loved because he is an orphan and admired for caring for his brother versus his fear that he is attempting to profit from his terrible experiences and that he is only sharing his pain in an attempt to dilute it. Though the book is marred by its ending--an unsuccessful parody of teenage rage against the cruel world--it will still delight admirers of structural experimentation and Gen-Xers alike. From Library Journal
It's a good guess that Jedediah PurdyAthe author of For Common Things and righteous agitator against ironyAwould hate Eggers and his late satirical magazine, Might, right along with this masterly memoir. That is a shame because, despite Eggers's inability to take anything seriously on its surface, this meandering story rests on a foundation of sincerity that is part of Purdy's rallying cry. Amid countless digressions, Eggers relates two tales: his mostly successful, if unconventional attempt at raising his much younger brother following their parents' deaths and his years founding and then witnessing the slow demise of Might. Throughout, Eggers eschews any contrivance. The expected tales of emotional longing, political alienation, and creative struggle by a smart twentysomething are replaced by a stream of hilarious, how-it-happened anecdotes; often inane, how-we-really-talk dialog; and quick jabs at some of our society's bizarre conventions. In the end one is left with a surprisingly moving tale of family bonding and resilience as well as the nagging suspicion that maybe he made the whole thing up. In any case, as compared with the spate of recent reminiscences by earnest youngsters, Eggers delivers a worthwhile story told in perfect pitch to the material. Highly recommended for public and undergraduate libraries.

I haven't a clue why all the bad reviews. I greatly enjoyed this book

I haven't a clue why all the bad reviews. I greatly enjoyed this book.
This is a wonderful memoir:genuine, cleverly written, hilarious at times while shockingly tragic at others.
It's a memoir with true character and a story I will not easily forget.
The ending left a little something to be desired, but this is a memoir, not a work of fiction, so it is what it is.
The people who are saying this is boring clearly picked the wrong book, I think many of them didn't realize that this was a true story and not a fictional tale.

ADHD? On and on, non-stop.
By Ken Stofft
Sorry folks, I got half way through and had to quit. It was like being in a room with someone with adhd or high on weed, chattering non-stop, although it must have been quite a trip for Eggers to write this. The death of his mother was a tough one for me to get through, too close to home, though my Mom died in 1980, the memory is still there. But, the story is fine, memoir as it is, but the telling of it was driving me batty. Too much. I don't think I would be comfortable around Eggers. Too keyed up for my comfort. I'll go back reading the likes of Galgut and Harrison.

READ THIS
By Random Amazon Buyer
Rare, self-reflective, funny, tender and indescribable. First-person narrative that is a must read. I can't believe I didn't know of Eggers before today. Its quite obviously in the first several pages why this piece could be so highly regarded by critics and readers alike. Incredible that it is the writer's first novel.

Aboveground-Belowground Linkages: Biotic Interactions, Ecosystem Processes, and Global Change (Oxford Series in Ecology and Evolution)By

Aboveground-Belowground Linkages provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive synthesis of recent advances in our understanding of the roles that interactions between aboveground and belowground communities play in regulating the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems, and their responses to global change. It charts the historical development of this field of ecology and evaluates what can be learned from the recent proliferation of studies on the ecological and biogeochemical significance of aboveground-belowground linkages.

The book is structured around four key topics: biotic interactions in the soil; plant community effects; the role of aboveground consumers; and the influence of species gains and losses. A concluding chapter draws together this information and identifies a number of cross-cutting themes, including consideration of aboveground-belowground feedbacks that occur at different spatial and temporal scales, the consequences of these feedbacks for ecosystem processes, and how aboveground-belowground interactions link to human-induced global change.

Review

"This is the most interesting book I read in 2010...It should appeal to a wide range of researchers, is an excellent source of reference and a potentially useful teaching resource." -- Bulletin of the British Ecological Society

"Is Aboveground-Belowground Linkages just another synthesis? Certainly not...An excellent and up-to-date overview of the field of plant and soil community interactions and ecosystem functioning...In my opinion, a book that all plant and soil ecologists should read...It will undoubtedly have a strong influence on the direction of the future research of many scientists in this field." -- Trends in Ecology and Evolution

"Well-organized, up-to-date, and insightful text that synthesized what we know (and just as importantly, don't know) about aboveground-belowground linkages...Given that the authors are pioneering leaders in this field and have had a long and productive collaboration, it is no surprise that their new book is excellent." -- Ecological Society of America

"This book will be a valuable reference for plant ecologists, ecosystem ecologists, and global change ecologists. The references alone are a treasure trove and include both older literature that may not be familiar to newer readers as well as a comprehensive list of more recent examples. The most important contribution of this volume, however, is the large number of synthetic examples that link individuals (traits) to populations to communities
to ecosystems and exemplify the interdependence that defines much of ecology." -- The Quarterly Review of Biology

Great book for plant and soil ecologists
By Professor of Soil Ecology
I'm teaching an upper division soil ecology course this coming fall, and we are going to read selected chapters from this book. It's going to be a bit advanced for this group, but it will be so worth it. Richard Bardgett is a god in this field and the book reflects his years of accumulated wisdom and insight. Beautifully written, great figures -- every time I pick it up I get reinspired!! Highly, highly recommend this book for a range of types -- master gardeners, grad students in ecology, scientists looking for a good introduction to soil processes and how they manifest in plant communities, as well as experts in plant-soil feedbacks!

Chapter 5 should be required reading for anyone who trying to link biodiversity to global climate change. The rest of the book undergirds that chapter. An all too rare case of thinkers willing to confront daunting complexity honestly and productively without drifting off into handwaving and guessing. My relationship to my compost pile will never be the same.

Resilience: Hard-Won Wisdom for Living a Better Life, by Eric Greitens Navy SEAL

A masterpiece of warrior wisdom that shows how to overcome obstacles with positive action. The best-selling author, Navy SEAL, and humanitarian Eric Greitens offers a self-help book unlike any other.

Two years ago, Eric Greitens unexpectedly heard from a former SEAL comrade, a brother-in-arms he hadn’t seen in a decade. Zach Walker had been one of the toughest of the tough. But ever since he returned home from war to his young family in a small logging town, he’d been struggling. Without a sense of purpose, plagued by PTSD, and masking his pain with heavy drinking, he needed help. Zach and Eric started writing and talking nearly every day, and Eric set down his thoughts on what it takes to build resilience in our lives.

Eric’s letters—drawing on both his own experience and wisdom from ancient and modern thinkers—are now gathered and edited into a timeless handbook. They explain how we can build purpose, confront the pain in our lives, practice compassion, develop our vocations, find a mentor, create happiness, follow a role model, think about the story of our lives, and much more.

Resilience grapples with real hardship. The lessons are deep, yet practical, and the advice leads to clear solutions. This is a profoundly hopeful book: We all face pain, difficulty, and doubt. But with resilience, we can lead vital, flourishing lives.

You should too!" —Martha Raddatz, ABC News Chief Global Affairs Correspondent

" —J.J. Abrams, Producer/Director/Writer

"Greitens gives readers a solid core of ideas on ways to overcome adversity . . . Robust, heart-to-heart lessons for moving beyond obstacles to create a better life." —Kirkus Reviews

"Moving and candid . . . What distinguishes this most unusual book is the extent to which it draws on what it’s not too much to call the wisdom of the ages… Eric Greitens successfully reminds us of a larger lesson. As the texts to which he refers so seamlessly recede from academic curricula and become almost esoteric for too many Americans, Greitens makes clear their profound, ongoing relevance—not just to understanding our culture but in helping us to make sense of our lives. In incorporating them in his letters to his one-time SEAL training buddy, Greitens underscores how the impractical is actually practical—and how we turn away, at our own risk, from wisdom." —Forbes.com

From the Inside Flap
We do not “bounce back” from injury or pain. We have to move through it. Our culture is obsessed with happiness—where to find it, how to achieve it—but happiness should not be a goal but a byproduct of our actions. Resilience is what makes us strong, keeps us going, and improves our character along the way.

Best-selling author, Navy SEAL, and humanitarian Eric Greitens offers a masterpiece of warrior wisdom that will change your life.

Resilience is a powerful gift for each of us
By D. Rogers
Eric Greitens certainly understands what it means to face challenges. In Resilience, he shares details of the frontlines that he has faced as a man, a humanitarian, a Navy SEAL, and as a leader. Yet, the true gift in this book is the humility with which it is written. We all have frontlines, he explains. Eric expertly navigates each of us through our own frontlines, whether it is found in a difficult job, a strained relationship, a search for meaning in life, or the frontlines of war.

My own frontline was in the mountains of Afghanistan just a few short months ago. During the challenging deployment, I faced continual threats. These experiences began to take a very heavy toll on me. After many months of facing these challenges and with no end in sight, I allowed myself to lose hope that I would ever make it home. However, it was during this difficult time in my life that I called upon the lessons that I had previously pulled from another of Greitens’ books, The Heart and the Fist. In that book, he explained the great potential for our perspective to help us to overcome hardships. During those long, seemingly endless nights in Afghanistan, I kept those lessons very close to me to find a reservoir of strength within me that I had never knew existed.

I’m proud to have now returned home safely from the deployment and finding this book at this time in my life is a true gift. Although my frontlines are now different, I continue to face new challenges. There are other returning veterans just like me, facing similar challenges in their reintegration to civilian life. Zach Walker is one of those veterans. In Greitens’ letters to Walker throughout this book, I have found the book's true value. Instead of merely reading correspondence between two friends, this book feels as though it is written to me: encouraging me, inspiring me and challenging me to strengthen my inner resilience to overcome hardships on my new frontlines. In that way, this book is written to each of us.

It doesn’t matter the source of your challenges in life, this book is an outstanding gift for each of us at facing challenges, overcoming hardships, and finding our own inner resilience.

SOME DEEP THOUGHTS

I really enjoyed one of Eric Greiten's other books, "The heart and the fist" so I was looking forward to this book. This book takes a different turn, he is helping a friend through letters. This book covers his replies to those letters as he tries to help his friend out. I was not too crazy about that format, but he really does get the topics across well. The book is very well written and it goes pretty deep. There were more than a few times while reading this book where I had to put it down and think about it for a while. Some of the writing hit pretty close to home and directly relating to my life, and the lives of some of my friends. To paraphrase the books description this really is a hopeful book letting us know that we all have problems, but we can all overcome those those problems. Being resilient we can work on those problems and bounce back.

After reading two of his books I really get the feeling that this world is a better place with Eric Greitens in it. He really comes across as a person trying to make things better.

Don't ask me to choose a favorite part - I really liked it all
By Phil 413
"Resilience" is about two Navy SEALs who are writing letters back and forth; Eric is trying to help his struggling friend, Drew.

What I most liked about Resilience is how the topics discussed - from defining resilience, happiness, identity, your responsibilities and philosophy to the need for a role model and practicing (following your models, breaking your habits and pursuing who you want to be) - are personal and specific to the SEALs, yet easy to apply to whatever challenge you're facing as a reader. The tone of the book is perfect and I loved it: It's strong and firm, yet compassionate, understanding, and hopeful (no excuses or giving up allowed, but also no condescension or judgment). Best of all, there is no "one-size fits all" strategy. The author repeatedly reminds his friend Drew, and the reader, that each person must find his or her own plan and follow it - what we're reading are suggestions and wisdoms, stories of overcoming from people who have gone through tough times, ideas that have worked for others - but ultimately, what will work for you only you can decide.

I also very much enjoyed how Eric used examples from history (Isaac Newton, several different authors, warriors, philosophers) to illustrate various concepts. The author made his many ideas - on life and how to live it in the wisest and best way a person can - interesting, thoughtful, engaging and memorable. As I was reading, I kept thinking of people I wanted to share parts of the book with. I'd read a thought, idea or quote and think, "I need to write this down!" But then I'd read the next thought or example and I liked so much of the book I couldn't write down all the parts I enjoyed - I'll just have to give a copy of the book to my friends and family who need it the most.

The Night Country: A Novel, by Stewart O'Nan

A ghost story that begins in everyday tragedy, from a distinctly American master of both forms: a "scary, sad, funny . . . mesmerizing read" (Stephen King)

At Midnight on Halloween in a cloistered New England suburb, a car carrying five teenagers leaves a winding road and slams into a tree, killing three of them. One escapes unharmed, another suffers severe brain damage. A year later, summoned by the memories of those closest to them, the three that died come back on a last chilling mission among the living.

A strange and unsettling ghost story, The Night Country creeps through the leaf-strewn streets and quiet cul-de-sacs of one bedroom community, reaching into the desperately connected yet isolated lives of three people changed forever by the accident: Tim, who survived yet lost everything; Brooks, the cop whose guilty secret has destroyed his life; and Kyle's mom, trying to love the new son the doctors returned to her. As the day wanes and darkness falls, one of them puts a terrible plan into effect, and they find themselves caught in a collision of need and desire, watched over by the knowing ghosts.

Macabre and moving, The Night Country elevates every small town's bad high school crash into myth, finding the deeper human truth beneath a shared and very American tragedy. As in his highly-prized Snow Angels and A Prayer for the Dying, once again Stewart O'Nan gives us an intimate look at people trying to hold on to hope, and the consequences when they fail.

From Publishers Weekly
More poignant than terrifying, this contemporary ghost story set in suburban Connecticut focuses on the survivors of a car accident that killed three teenagers on Halloween exactly a year before the novel begins. Tim escaped without a scratch, but seeks to assuage his survivor's guilt on the first anniversary of the event. Kyle, once a teen rebel, is now a brain-damaged shadow (a kind of zombie) of his former self. Brooks, the townie cop who discovered the accident, watches helplessly as his life skids out of control. And most poignant of all, Nancy Sorensen, Kyle's mother, stoically cares for her damaged son and tries to heal a marriage nearly destroyed by grief. These sad characters are haunted in another way as well, by the ghosts of the three killed instantly in the crash: Marco, Toe and Danielle, who address themselves directly to the reader. "We're on a mission," they say, but their objective is never explicitly stated; they just observe as the day's events unfold. Each character's story is told (and, eventually, woven together) in O'Nan's simple, searching prose, which captures the inchoate passion and longing of teenage life as well as the bleak resignation of middle age. O'Nan demonstrates remarkable restraint; there's no grasping for tragic meaning (the accident was "just something random that happened to us, bad luck," according to Marco) or melodrama. Despite some confusing shifts in time-it's occasionally hard to decipher what's happening now and what happened then-a coherent thesis of misfortune emerges: death has many victims, and the ghosts haunting the survivors don't only appear on Halloween.

From Booklist
The aftermath of a Halloween tragedy haunts a New England town on the one-year anniversary of a typical teen joyride that ended with a car wrapped around a tree. Toe, Marco, and Danielle were instantly killed. Kyle lives on, sort of; a severe brain injury obliterates the rebel in him, the accident leaving him with the mind of a child. Tim, "the lucky one" in the backseat, his arms around Danielle, survived but now has a death wish. Officer Brooks, the first on the scene, was terribly altered by the event, and his life is in shambles. Now, on Halloween, he fears that Tim is going to do something horrible. Travis and Greg, buds of Toe, don't want the day to go by without memorializing their dear departed friends. O'Nan, author of Wish You Were Here [BKL F 1 02], tells a ghost story from the point of view of Marco's ghost. Like the narrator of Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones [BKL My 1 02], Marco (along with Danielle and Toe) can witness the lives of those they left behind, see the impact their deaths have had on the community, but have little direct effect on certain inevitabilities--an interesting literary contrivance that doesn't always pay off (see Douglas Coupland's Girlfriend in a Coma (1998) and Hey, Nostradamus [BKL My 15 03] for other examples of this vantage point). O'Nan's voice is compelling, his prose lovely and evocative. Benjamin Segedin

Haunted Look At A Halloween Car Wreck ...
By Kindle Customer
And the lives altered by it. Stewart O'Nan takes the lives of all the people involved in a terrible car wreck on Halloween, puts them under a magnifying glass and forces you to watch their shattered existences play out in this brilliant novel he dedicated to Ray Bradbury-another God of the written word.

The story is told from the perspective of ghost teenagers who perished in the crash. When their loved ones think of them, which is almost all the time, they are summoned to their sides to watch on helpless, as their lives spiral out of control from losing them.

When you reach the midway point of this book, you'll think it's nothing more than a deep character study of these ruined lives, but then O'Nan takes you in a completely different direction, turning his prose into suspense, taking hold of your mind until you reach the final page.

This guy knows how to write and keep the reader wondering what the hell is going on in a good way. And as with any meaningful book, the characters in this one stay with you after the final page is turned.

The Night Country was my first O'Nan book and after turning page fifty, I got back on here fast and ordered more of his works. This isn't a bad place to start, I think.

This one will stay with you ... trust me.

Home is where your losses are...
By P. Padden
The Night Country begins with a seductive invitation: "Come then, come with us, out into the night... come stalk the dark back roads and stand outside the bright houses, calm as murderers in the yard, quiet as deer."
It's Cabbage Night, the night before Hallowe'en in Avon, Connecticut, and you've just been invited to spend some quality time with Marco and Toe and Danielle, beginning on this cool autumn night that "smells of dust and coriander on the wind."
"It's the best time of year up here," Marco tells us - "witch hunts and woodsmoke... a 'new' England... veined with black rivers and massacres."
Marco and Danielle and Toe are three sweet, feisty, and very likeable teens, or at least they were until last Hallowe'en when, joyriding around the back roads, tired after working at their menial jobs, but happy just being together - "wanting the night to last forever" - they die in a horrific accident. Also in the car are Kyle, their bud-dealing Goth pal, and Tim, Danielle's sweet, introspective boyfriend.
Part of Kyle survives the accident, but with brain damage so severe that his personality, his prickly rebelliousness, is deadened. "Imagine diving off a five story building and landing on your face," suggests Marco. "Now imagine getting better." Kyle's nose and cheeks and forehead are prostheses - "only his chin is the same, and his hands."
Tim, Danielle's boyfriend, is the only one to survive the accident physically intact, but he's lost everything - all of the friendship and love that gave his life its meaning. Plagued by loss and survivor's guilt, he no longer feels any sense of belonging to - or in - the world.
More than the dead, these living victims haunt Officer Brooks, the police officer who initiates the high speed chase that precipitates the accident, but it's the dead who mess with Brooksie's head, sitting, invisible, in his kitchen teasing his dogs to make them bark - egging him on to commit the unspeakable - "We've seen him hang up his gun in slow motion, deliberate as a horror flick, and only Toe's twisted enough to make the holster swing, a cheesy temptation." Toe's ghost is twitching for vindication and revenge - he was the one behind the wheel, seemingly responsible for his own death as well as his friends'.
Danielle's ghost tries desperately to soothe Tim's appalling loneliness, and to fend off his desire to join her - "This must be how Dylan Klebold felt," Tim thinks on the heartbreaking anniversary of the accident - "knowing he was going to school the next day and never coming home." And Marco narrates it all for us with a kind of edgy detachment as the six characters are compelled to act out the final scenes of their intimately enmeshed lives and deaths.
Loneliness and isolation stalk through the pages of The Night Country as Kyle's mom struggles with the pity she can't abide and the fear of being perceived as a monster if she tries to move beyond her grief to resume a normal life, and Officer Brooks struggles to atone for the one tragic mistake that he made too late in his career and his life to forgive himself. Tim is a pariah now - the kids at school see his dead friends as legends, and Tim as an anomaly - not a lucky survivor, but a victim, the other one who should have died.
The book ends in a cataclysmic liebestodt of vindication and vengeance, remembrance and redemption, and in its final paragraph answers Marco's poignant question, "Where would we be if love ended at death?"
The emotional impact of this book belies its brevity. As with much of what Mr. O'Nan writes, I had a good cry reading it - several of them, in fact. The weird part was, my box of tissues kept disappearing and then turning up someplace that I knew I hadn't left it. Toe, probably. He'd be twisted enough.

The Waffen SS in Combat: A Photographic History (Images of War), by Bob Carruthers

This is the photographic history of the Waffen-SS in combat on all fronts. The short six year history of the Waffen SS spanned triumph and disaster, and their story can be traced through these powerful images, which clearly document the reality of combat from 1940 to 1945.

These rare images span the combat history of the Waffen-SS from the optimism of the opening phases of the war in the west through the challenges of Barbarossa and the long and bloody retreat against a numerically far superior enemy in both the east and the west. This powerful photographic record is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the course of the war from the German perspective and clearly demonstrates the scale of the task undertaken by the Waffen-SS on all fronts.
